Dear Journal,
I’m so nervous.
I had a second callback today for the Peter Pan revival. The lead actor had to be recast due to some scandal so they held open auditions. I only went for it because Blaine made me do it. I mean, yeah, I do have the necessary skills and looks, but so do a lot of other, more experienced actors who haven’t only just graduated from college.
I never actually expected to make it through the first round, and especially not when I saw the sheer number of other talented auditioners, but I guess they liked me enough to have me come back.
To be honest, Peter Pan would be a dream role for me. There are very few roles out there where a countertenor vocal range is not only appreciated, but also desired. I’ve worked really hard on strengthening my lower range, but I wish I wouldn’t constantly be required to tuck away parts of me just to make myself more palatable to the masses.
I’ve given it my all in not only the audition, but also the callbacks, and all I can do now is wait. They were talking about doing a chemistry read with the actress who plays Wendy if I made it through to the next round, but I won’t know for a few more days if I made it through or not.
The other guys that got this far are really talented too, of course, but I have something they don’t. A fantastically supportive and talented husband and the incomparable Maggie Banks to run lines with!
I could tell that they were impressed with the Peter Pan production I helped the home put on, and the references some of the residents had written for me. They may be retired performers, but they still know and have talent and I can only hope their words give me the leg up I need.
