On Saturday, Blaine woke up to the smell of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. He walked downstairs, the sound of his feet slapping against the hardwood floor accompanied the sizzle of bacon and eggs in the frying pan. Kurt was standing at the stove, fixing breakfast for anyone who happened to be awake, but mainly to thank Blaine. Blaine sat down at the island in the kitchen and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Good morning, Kurt,” he said sleepily.
Kurt jumped the slightest bit at Blaine’s voice; he had thought it was Rachel who had come downstairs. “Oh, good morning, Blaine. Breakfast is almost finished. I thought I would thank you for agreeing to tutor me,” he said softly as his cheeks flushed with color.
Blaine smiled, and Kurt noted that he was wearing a shirt this time, “It’s no problem Kurt.”
Kurt placed a plate in front of Blaine loaded with the food he had just cooked. He though, settled for a few pancakes and eggs, but stayed away from the bacon. He had a physique to worry about, and the pancakes would be enough to work off. He watched Blaine eat, noticing the way the muscles in his jaw and throat flexed when he chewed and swallowed.
”If you eat any faster, Blaine, you’re not going to taste it,” he joked playfully.
Blaine swallowed and smiled back at him, and started to eat slower at Kurt’s playful retort.
The sound of a door quietly shutting upstairs and the soft sound of feet coming downstairs were made by one of Blaine and Rachel’s fathers, Neil Anderson-Berry.
”Good morning, to both of you,” he greeted the two. His hazel eyes were exactly Blaine’s and it was clear where he got his looks from. Neil ruffled Blaine’s curls and placed a soft kiss on his forehead, while Kurt received a welcoming pat on the shoulder, and a warm smile.
”Good morning, Dad,” Blaine replied, and Kurt smiled at the exchange of affection between them. Kurt said hello to Neil as well, and thanked him for allowing him to stay the weekend at the Anderson-Berry residence.
”It’s certainly no problem, Kurt. You know you’re always welcome here. Though from what Rachel has told me, you’ll be here even more, now that Blaine has agreed to tutor you,” Neil said as he fixed himself and his husband a plate of food, and placed one of them in the microwave to stay warm.
Kurt flushed to his scalp at the statement, and looked down. He was embarrassed at the fact that he needed help from someone.
”Now, Kurt, there’s no reason to be ashamed. We all need help sometimes; you can’t go through life without seeking help. You can’t do everything alone, Kurt. “
Blaine smiled encouragingly at Kurt, and placed his now empty plate in the sink. “I can start tutoring you today, Kurt, if you want. We could go to the Lima Bean for coffee, too.”
Kurt nodded, “I’ll go get ready.”
Blaine dressed casual for their tutoring and coffee session, but he was definitely aiming to impress Kurt. He chose a pair of dark skinny jeans and an olive colored v-neck, paired with a tan cardigan. The olive tones of his shirt made the hazel in his eyes brighten, and the tan cardigan highlighted his tanned skin. Finally grabbing a beanie and fixing it over his dark curls, he was ready.
Kurt, however, was a different story. He couldn’t choose from his outfits he had brought with him. In the end, he picked out a pair of his trademark ‘painted-on’ jeans, and a dark grey pea coat. He briefly woke Rachel as he laced up his knee-high boots, only to tell her he was going to get coffee and study with Blaine. She mumbled something and buried her head in the pillows as a reply.
Blaine was already in the car when Kurt went downstairs, so he ducked out the doorway with a quick goodbye to the Anderson-Berry fathers. As he climbed in the car, he did a quick once-over of Blaine, noting that he had swapped the bowties and high waters for something much more casual. “Casual looks good on you, Mr. Anderson-Berry,” he commented.
”Mister? I’m your tutor, not your teacher. But, thank you.” Blaine flushed to the roots of his hair at the compliment. As he drove, Kurt tried not to stare. This was the first time he had ever seen Blaine in a way other than just his best friend’s brother, and he was liking the view.
An hour later, Blaine and Kurt were situated at the Lima Bean in the back corner of the coffee house. There were papers everywhere, along with two textbooks and notebooks.
”So, you substitute ‘x+12’ in for ‘y’, because the other equation in the system states that ‘y=x+12’….. Yeah, like that. Do you understand now?” Blaine asked Kurt.
The understanding in Kurt’s expression was clear enough to know that yes, he had understood. Kurt closed their notebooks and textbooks against Blaine’s protests and dismay. “Alright, Blaine, it’s time for you to relax. Stop worrying about school, or anything else. You’re going to sit here and drink your medium drip and you’re going to have a conversation with me about something other than schoolwork. Understood?” Kurt said, a demand ringing in the countertenor’s voice.
Blaine’s eyes widened, but he nodded anyway. Kurt sat up straighter and took a drink of his coffee, “So tell me, oh great tutor, why don’t you mind being at the bottom of the food chain?”
”Blaine flushed and looked down, “At the bottom, you don’t have to worry about disappointing anyone when you screw up. There’s no one looking up to you. All I have to worry about is red and white letterman jackets and slushies. I’d rather admire those at the top that I actually care about from afar.”
”Who exactly do you look up to, Blaine? You’ve got to want to impress someone…” Kurt replied as he crossed his slender legs.
Blaine stared out the window of the coffee shop, his eyes focused on something that really wasn’t there. “The person that I want to impress could care less. They know I’m there, but usually it’s just an out of sight, out of mind thing unless he’s away from his ‘friends’.”
Kurt bit his rose-colored lips, turning them a darker pink. He couldn’t help but feel bad for Blaine, it wasn’t his fault he was so smart, right? “Well, Blaine, any man would be lucky to have you. You’re a great guy.”
”Yeah…” Blaine muttered.
”Well, Kurt, why haven’t you gotten yourself a man? You’re on top! I’m sure you have them on their knees for you, no pun intended,” he continued.
It was Kurt’s turn to blush this time. “Well, there’s not exactly an abundance of gay males here in lovely Lima, Ohio. But, you know, if there was, I’m sure they would be. What’s your excuse for no man in your life, Anderberry? You’re certainly not lacking in the looks department.” Kurt replied, with a slight laugh coloring his voice.
Blaine looked up at Kurt, his hazel eyes swimming with emotion. “I’m forever alone. No one has ever remotely shown any interest in me, and the person I’m interested in is way out of my league,” Blaine heaved with a sigh.
Kurt drew his bottom lip into his mouth, and cast his sea foam eyes down at the table. He reached across the table, and placed his hand over top of Blaine’s. Blaine lifted his eyes to meet Kurt’s, “There’s someone out there for everyone, Blaine.”
