Blaine knew something was wrong as soon as he entered the dark apartment after work. It was only that morning that Kurt promised him a home cooked meal and the treat of the naked nature. The hairs on the back of Blaine’s neck still on end as he dropped his bag near the door as he entered the threshold.
“Kurt?” he called into the darkness, but received only silence in response.
Blaine had an overactive imagination when it came to situations like this. He always thought the worst. Images of serial killers and axe murders flashed through his mind as well as thoughts of the paranormal sort. Kurt had told him countless times not to watch his collection of scream movies, but Blaine never listened.
He shook his head to rid himself of the images that flooded his mind and slowly trudged his way blindly down the hallway.
“Shit” he muttered as he knee came into contact with the corner of the coffee table and the sudden collision made him jump. It was then that Blaine heard the sound of gut wrenching sobs that made his heart feel like it was being twisted by an iron fist. Blaine hobbled quickly to the direction of the cries, which lead him to the bedroom. The door opened with a slight creak and the room, like the rest of the apartment was dark apart from the silver glow casted from the moon through the open window.
The cries were now teetering on the verge of hysterical when Blaine shut the bedroom door and walked towards the side of the bed. There in the corner of the room, was Kurt. His slim frame looked impossibly smaller as his arms curled themselves around his knees and his head lowered. Blaine could easily see the effect the sobs had on Kurt’s body as it shook from the power of the cries.
Without a thought, Blaine rushed to Kurt’s side and wrapped his boyfriend in his powerful arms. Blaine could only think of one thing to cause Kurt this much pain and he prayed to whoever would listen that he was wrong. Minutes could have passed, hours even, but Blaine stayed like that sitting with his back to their bedroom wall with a fragile Kurt crying in his arms, with his own tears silently running down his cheeks into the depths of his boyfriend’s hair.
Blaine had not dared to ask Kurt to tell him what was wrong; he hadn’t even uttered a word since entering the room, who knows how long ago. But soon the room began to be filled with the chill of the night through the open window and he could feel Kurt going lax in his arms, he sobs subsided. Blaine ran his fingers gently through Kurt’s ruffled hair and carefully extracted Kurt from his embrace. Blaine stood and stretched, his muscles sighing after spending so much time in the same cramped space. He bent his knees and slowly lifted Kurt, one arm supporting his legs, the other his head and moved his sleeping Kurt to their bed. Blaine gently placed Kurt on the middle of the mattress and went about removing his shoes and socks. Blaine then removed his own, and snuggled into the bed with Kurt in his arms and pulled the blanket over their bodies. Blaine did not sleep, it feel selfish to allow himself the luxury of sleep, when he had Kurt to care for.
Sometime later Kurt became restless in Blaine’s hold. It was slow movements at first almost as if Kurt was rocking his body back and forth. But then the movements became faster, more prominent. Blaine didn’t know what to do and his face was the mask of panic. He held onto Kurt tighter and rubbed circles on his arms.
“Shh, baby, it’s alright, you’re okay”
Suddenly if out of nowhere, Kurt’s scream, high pitched and terrifying filled the bedroom. His body was shaking frantically like he was possessed. Scream after scream erupted deep from Kurt’s throat. Blaine was in a state of sheer panic as he watched Kurt fling himself around under the blanket. On instinct, Blaine was quick to straddle Kurt’s waist onto the mattress and pin each of his arms on the bed above his head to stop Kurt from hurting himself. It was only then that Blaine was able to try and bring his Kurt back to him.
“Kurt! Baby! Wake up Kurt! Come back to me”
Tears started falling steadily down Blaine’s cheeks as he shook Kurt in hopes of waking him up. Nothing seemed to work and Kurt was still screaming into the darkness. It was only then that Blaine let out a final yell of Kurt’s name and brang his hand hard down against Kurt’s cheek with a deafening smack.
“KURT!’”
The silence of the room was strange to Blaine’s ears after Kurt’s heart retching screams. When Blaine looked down he instantly felt a pang of guilt clawing his insides when he saw the beginnings of a red botch of his handprint developing on Kurt’s cheek. He took his hand to Kurt’s abused cheek and gently tried to sooth the skin.
“Blaine?” The name was spoken quietly, just above a whisper.
“Hey honey” Blaine gently responded as two eyelids opened slowly to reveal blue eyes.
“I’m so sorry Blaine”
“I love you, I’m sorry”
Kurt started chanting the same words over and over like a spell and started to become frantic once again. Blaine gathered Kurt in his arms, but this time he needed to know the answer to Kurt’s pain. He needed him to feel better; he needed him to be better.
“Kurt, its okay baby”
“Please Kurt, tell me what’s wrong”
“Please”
Blaine laid back into the pillows and took Kurt with him, hugging him to his body.
A few tears had escaped Kurt’s tired eyes as a snuggled closer into Blaine’s warmth.
“H-he touch me Blaine”
“Adam, Adam h- he touched me”
“It’s my entire fault Blaine”
“I’m sorry”
Kurt cried his confessions and his apologises into Blaine’s shoulder and slumped into Blaine from exhaustion, sleep taking him once again.
Blaine was startled at the new revelations of Kurt’s confessions. This new information felt like a punch straight to his gut as he wound his arms tighter around his sleeping Kurt. He loved Kurt with every single fibre and ounce of his being and his first instinct was protect. He would stick by Kurt through this; he knew it would not be easy.
Blaine once again laid his head back onto the pillows ready to guard Kurt from his nightmares. Sleep did not take him and he would not let it. Blaine let a few tears track silent paths down his cheeks as he let his mind wrap itself around Kurt’s confession and let the horribleness of the situation finally present itself to his consciousness.
That horrible night one year ago
Kurt’s screams
Blood
Blaine’s shouts
The sound of broken skin
The sound of cries
The deafening sound of three words spoken in the darkened alleyway from an unfamiliar voice
“Adam is dead”.
