Life Goes On
Chapter 16 – Home at Last
The cab finally came to a stop in front of their apartment building after a long few days and everyone inside the cab was thrilled to be home. Blaine pays the cabby while Joey helps Kurt out of the cab with Elizabeth in his arms. Emma starts walking inside the building as Blaine and Joey grab their belongings from the trunk of the cab. Emma holds the elevator door button opened until everyone is inside. She pushes the 5 button and they slowly rise to the fifth floor. After a chime from the elevator it stops and the door opens. They all walk to their apartment door. Blaine unlocks the door and they all go inside, happy to be home.
Kurt places Elizabeth on the couch and checks to make sure she is alright. He looks at her bandage on her head and sees a little drainage but they said that was expected and not to change the bandage until the morning. Elizabeth was due for some medicine so Emma sat next to her while Kurt went to get her meds and a glass of water. Blaine is thanking Joey for all his help before Joey says goodbye to the girls and Kurt. Joey leaves the family alone to get settled for the evening. After giving Elizabeth her meds, she and Emma laid down on the couch to watch Beauty and the Beast while Blaine put away the things they brought home from the hospital. Kurt started making pizza for dinner since everyone was getting hungry and it would be quick. Besides, it's a great comfort food that everyone loves.
After dinner the family finished watching the movie when Blaine mentions to Kurt. “I think it's going to be an early night for the girls. Today has really tired them out.” Kurt looks at the girls and sees them struggling just to keep their eyes open and smiles in agreement. The movie soon ends and Blaine picks up Emma while Kurt picks up Elizabeth and they slowly walk to the girl's bedroom and gently lay their precious packages down on their beds. They cover them up and kiss their foreheads lovingly while their daughters sleep soundly never realizing they have been moved. The two Fathers walk towards the door and close it quietly as Kurt says. “We are pretty good at putting them to bed without waking them.” Blaine chuckles as he says, “Well we had better enjoy for now because someone is getting pretty big and her days of being carried around are quickly coming to an end I'm afraid. Emma's growing up too fast Kurt.” They walk into the living room and plop down on the couch. Blaine wraps his arms around Kurt and is finally able to relax.
“Are you tired? Do you want to go to call it a night too?” Kurt asks as he rubs Blaine's back. “No, I am wide awake and being in your arms is the only place I want to be right now.” Blaine says as he rests his head on Kurt's shoulder. “Good, because Blaine I want to sit here and cuddle with you while I tell you something.” Kurt says softly. Blaine kisses Kurt's neck and says, “What's on your mind Kurt? You have me sort of worried.” Kurt lets out a deep breath and begins. “I realize how close I came these last few days to losing everything I love and it scared the crap out of me. I know Elizabeth is going to recover completely but Blaine we could have lost her or she could have been permanently injured and all her dreams gone. But the scariest realization is I could have lost you, the love of my life because of my choices. Blaine, I can't survive not having you in my life. I just want you to know I love you so much and I will do whatever is needed to keep us together and our family together and safe forever.” Kurt lifts Blaine's chin and kisses him passionately. Kurt slowly pulls away and Blaine begins to say, “You know Kurt, bad things are going to happen. We are going to have arguments and ups and downs because that is what happens in life. The girls are going to get hurt and be unhappy at times because we can't protect them from life. But Kurt, we can promise to talk to each other about our concerns, fears, and dreams. We can promise to listen and not jump to conclusions before hearing each other out. We have something very special that only a few couples have. We are smart enough to see it and we need to protect our love no matter what because Kurt I can't survive without you in my life either. I want our girls to grow up being loved and supported by us. I want them to have a childhood that when they remember it a smile appears on their face. We can't replace their Mother but we can make them feel loved, and that is something not all kids feel, but our daughters will. Kurt, I have come to realize that being a parent is an overwhelming responsibility that I have never experienced or even knew it existed until those two little girls came into my life. I used to live my life for me and you but now my life is being lived based on what is best for our daughters. Does that sound weird?” Kurt looks at Blaine with moist eyes as he answers. “No, that is not weird. You sound like a loving Father who only wants the best for his children and together we will do that. I love you so much Blaine.” Kurt says as he tightens his hold around Blaine. “Are we on the same page now?” Kurt asks. “I think we are,” Blaine says happily.
“Now let's head to bed because those two sleeping angels are going to transform into energy filled pip squeaks in a few hours. They are going to need our attention and sleeping then will not be an option.” Blaine chuckles as he rises from the couch as images of his active girls fill his head and a loving smile appears on his face. They change into their pajamas and are now cuddling happily in their bed as they fall asleep.
A few hours later Kurt feels a tiny hand opening his closed eye and asking, “Are you awake Daddy? I'm awake and Elizabeth needs to go to the bathroom.” Kurt smiles and nudges Blaine awake. “What?” Blaine groans startled. Kurt pulls the covers off Blaine and announces, “Time for us to start being Dads again, so get up and let's start the rest of our life together.”
