It was as if somebody had only just flicked a light switch on in Blaine’s brain. He was kissing Kurt. His student. If sitting alone in a near-empty coffee shop was dangerous territory…this was a landmine.
Blaine’s breathe hitched as he felt Kurt’s tongue sweep along his lower lip, coaxing him to deepen the kiss further.
Stop this. Now.
Breaking the kiss, Blaine stood up abruptly, almost knocking his chair over in the process. Breathing heavily, he steadied the chair, and stared at Kurt. The blue-eyed boy gazed back, a fearful expression on his face.
What had he been thinking? Had someone walked in…a teacher or a student; Santana was still at the register for god’s sake! He was too frightened to turn around and see if she’d noticed anything or if she’d been busy with customers…or lack thereof. He knew the right thing to do would be to tell Kurt that the kiss was a mistake…that he should leave right now. But, somehow, at this moment…he just didn’t want to.
Blaine’s thoughts were interrupted by a small voice.
“Please don’t walk away.” Kurt said quietly.
Blaine slowly sat back down. Although it was the right thing to do, he hadn’t been planning on going anyway, despite Kurt’s request.
Kurt’s lips turned up into a small smile.
“A-are you going to pretend that didn’t happen?” he asked timidly.
“…No.” Blaine replied. He sighed. “The last time I did that…I upset someone I really like.”
Kurt blushed, and Blaine couldn’t help himself smiling slightly at how adorably gorgeous the boy was. A silence followed, but it wasn't awkward- it was rather comfortable, actually.
“So,” Blaine said finally, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. “I think…I think we need to talk. About this…Only if you-“
“I want to.”
“-want to. Only if you want to.”
Kurt smiled shyly. “Well...is there someplace we could do so? Privately?”
Blaine thought for a second. He was once again venturing into that land mine, crossing the boundaries of what was appropriate between teacher and student. He swallowed nervously before he spoke.
"We could go to school..." he said lamely.
Kurt quirked an eyebrow, biting back a grin.
"Really, Mr. Anderson?" he said, a sarcastic edge to his tone. "Really?"
"Hey! It was just a suggestion." Blaine answered, laughing. He mentally added 'sarcasm and sass' to his 'Why Kurt Hummel is awesome' list that he'd just compiled in his head. "And...and I think it's okay for you to call me Blaine...if you want to, that is."
"I do." Kurt smiled. "Okay Blaine, have you got a house? An apartment?"
Blaine froze. Inviting Kurt over to apartment?
He gazed at the boy, heart softening at the hopeful look on his face.
"...Sure."
---------------
Blaine arrived to the apartment complex before Kurt, who had been following his Honda with his Navigator. He'd been quite confused seeing the boy climbing into the enormous 4-wheeler, grinning when Kurt had lifted an eyebrow at Blaine's surprise and smirked as if to say "Bet you didn't expect that, huh?"
Just as he noticed Kurt pulling up, Blaine quickly walked inside, taking the steps two or three at a time. He didn't know many of his neighbours, only an old lady named Mrs. Jones. She was aware of his being a substitute teacher as she'd introduced herself when he'd first moved in a month ago. It was that reason that Blaine had asked Kurt to take his time in following him inside; he didn't want to arouse any suspicion.
Thankful that there was no sign of Mrs. Jones, or any of his neighbours on the 5th floor for that matter, Blaine let himself inside his apartment, leaving the door open with the knowledge that Kurt would be up in a minute or so.
"So, this is your apartment, huh?" Blaine turned at the melodic sound of Kurt's voice. The boy stood at the door, arms crossed and eyes scanning the room. He nodded approvingly, turning to Blaine. "I like the decoré...very modern-chic."
"Thanks." Blaine replied, smiling. "I picked out the art...my friend helped with the furniture."
"It's lovely." Kurt said. Blaine grinned at the boy, and yet again, a comfortable silence fell over the two.
"So...do you want anything to drink? Coffee, lemonade...water?"
Kurt shook his head, and made his way to the two-seated sofa. Sitting down, he patted the space beside him, ushering Blaine to sit beside him. He cleared his throat.
"So. Let's talk."
"I'm not really sure what to say..." Blaine replied, staring at the boy.
"Then don't say anything." Kurt whispered, tilting his head to the left and leaning in to kiss the teacher...to which Blaine suddenly felt a rush of panic and stood up abruptly.
He's too young- what the fuck are you doing- make him leave now!
"What am I doing!?" Blaine exclaimed, frantic. Burying his face in his hands, he groaned. "Oh my god, I invited a student to my apartment."
Blaine paced back and forth, Kurt staring up at him with wide eyes.
"What was I thinking- I could lose my job over this- Do you even know how many teaching jobs are available in Ohio? Especially substitute positions- if anyone finds out that you're here...oh god, I kissed you. I kissed you twice and I can't even-"
"Then tell me you didn't feel anything!" Kurt shouted, standing up and causing Blaine to jump at the sudden outburst. "Tell me you didn't feel anything- anything when we kissed, and I'll leave right now, and we won't speak of this ever again." He sat back down, tears welling in his eyes, a frustrated expression working on his face.
Blaine gazed at the boy, knowing that lying would do no good now.
"...I can't."
And then he took a step closer and wrapped his arms around him, and there they stood for a while; Blaine holding Kurt in a tight embrace. He knew he shouldn't have, that he should've lied and said he'd felt nothing...even though he finally understood what those stupid Hollywood rom-coms meant when they went on about feeling that 'spark'. The truth was, was that Blaine had felt that spark... and fireworks, and butterflies and fairies and a bunch of other sickenly adorable things. He wasn't sure if he'd ever felt that about anyone before.
He'd had only one sort-of-serious boyfriend in the past.
It was in college; Blaine needed to borrow a particular book for an exam he'd had coming up, which unfortunately for him, was located on the top shelf. Being rather...vertically challenged all his life, he'd almost given up and gone to ask a librarian for assistance, when a very handsome man reached over and took it down for him.
Blake was a photographer, and loved to photograph, as he put it, 'only beautiful things'. After Blaine had thanked him, Blake had told him he'd noticed him in the library more than a few times, and had only just worked up the courage to approach him.
So when Blake asked him out, Blaine decided to go for it, deciding that the photographer seemed like a genuinely nice guy. And after a few weeks of dinners, months of being boyfriend and boyfriend, Blaine finally agreed to allow Blake to photograph him, something he'd been insisting since their first date.
He'd been nervous about being a muse, and while there was nothing risqué about the shoot, there had been a few shirtless ones. But Blaine ultimately decided that he could trust the photographer...that he felt comfortable with him, and that he was definitely falling for him.
Until he'd recieved a rather dirty text from said photograher, that was adressed to an 'Aaron'. After 'borrowing' Blake's phone, Blaine found out that he'd been cheating on him on not one, but four other men. He went through the typical stages of heartbreak, at first feeling cheap and used, blaming himself often, but eventually pulled himself together and decided that Blake was an enormous douchebag.
At the time, he'd definitely felt that he could fall in love with the photographer, that there was a future somewhere there. And while he'd been wrong about Blake, Blaine was currently feeling the same way about a certain blue-eyed boy in his arms.
Kurt was now resting his head on his shoulder, his soft hair tickling Blaine's cheek. He wanted this. He wanted to try and figure out where the two of them could go from here.
However....was the trouble they could get in really worth it?
"This is very risky." he whispered.
"I'm willing if you are." Kurt replied.
And then Blaine tucked his hand under Kurt's chin, lifting his head up and pressing his lips against the boy's own. And the sparks and fairies and butterflies returned and Blaine had never been so sure about anything else in his life.
And so he broke the kiss, but only to say one thing.
"I am."
Yep, it was definitely worth it.
