It started to rain so I find refuge in a small house, though it was empty I gladly took it in as my home. I’d be lying if I say I didn’t miss Erica but I lived just fine with out her years ago I can do it now. I find cloths and create a makeshift bed under the only part of the roof that isn’t leaking. I close my eyes trying sleep but instead I see Erica. Her hair is wrapped around her face and she wears her favorite blue night gown. She stands in front of the window watching rain droplets fall. Her fingers play with the moon necklace I gave her our 10 year of being together. A tear is shed, rolling down her cheek the same speed as the droplets on the window. “Come home,” she says. I snap my eyes open to sunlight.
I’m an idiot.
I run out to the house and head towards Boston as fast as I can. I begin my search for her at our house. I inhale a breath of air but it is crisp and clean with the smell of rain filling my nostrils. I walk up to the place I once called home but she hasn’t been here for a while.
It take to long for me to realize how stupid I was for leaving her. Now she has moved on. I assume she went to Paris, I was the only thing holding her back all this time. I sit at the steps and sink my face into my knees. I can’t control my sobs; I pushed her away. The only person that has loved me with no stings attached. I think on the last 5 month and how disappointed Erica would be of me.
She taught me that everything has life and even more that everyone deserves it. Her voice rings in the back of my mind. “We were blessed with eternal life; Its not right for us to steal it from everyone who crosses our path.” She is the light that I need to pull me from the darkness. Julian isn’t right for her but it was not my place to stop her from being happy. Because in the end neither one of us is happy.
“Blaine?” My head snaps up to see Erica and a middle age woman standing next to her. I rise to my feet and wrap my arms around her in a tight hug. She holds me equally tight and whispers. “I knew you would come home.”
“I’m so sorry.” I say pulling back to look at her. “I feel so stupid.”
She shake her head in attempt to hush me. “I don’t care. I’m just glad your safe. Come on.” She pulls me up to the house. Inside it hasn’t changed a bit the glass I threw was still there marking my path.
I cringe at the thought of that night. “How did you know I was here?”
“I tracked down Esters lineage and found her granddaughter Rose. I had her put a spell around the house to tell me if anyone came around.” We take a seat on the dusty sofa. She looks at my clothes and frowns. "What have you been up to?”
I turn away, “I got lost in my anger did thing I regret.” I look at my collar and pants and see all the dried blood stains and dirt on my body.
“Don’t worry. Rose is getting you clothes now.” She reassures me. I look at her and she looks tired I can tell by her grayish skin it has been a while since she fed but it was more then that.
“Erica are you alright?”
“I’m going to be better now that your here.” She gives me a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes.
“Lets go to Paris. Just forget about stupid America and become Europeans. Paris then Athens. I would love to see Rome, maybe even Madrid. see if we can find some one in your family.” I tell her. She raises her eyebrows while listening to me. “We can go right now. Well after I get clean I mean.”
“Blaine I can’t.” She tells me I stare at her confused.
“Why not?” I ask hurt tat she doesn’t want to leave with me.
“Julian and I…”
“Screw him compel him and lets go. Paris is the land of love right. You can find some one new in seconds.”
“No Blaine. I changed him.” She stutters, her voice faltering as she looks away from me.
My mouth falls open in shock I stand up. “Why?” I nearly shout.
“Blaine don’t, I just got you back.” she reaches from me but I step out of her reach and demand to know.
“Why would you change him.”
“Sit down and I will explain it to you.” She waits til I sit before explaining what happened in my absents. “After you left Julian demanded to know what I was keeping from him. I thought about compelling him like I did to Joshua and Katherine but instead I told him. He was shocked at first but he didn’t run. I also told him your whole story and my family's. But to my surprise he asked me to change him. I told him no. And he needed to think about it and I needed to find you. So I left to Jersey and found Rose. I was worried about you so I had her do spells to find you but you move around to much so I decided to put a spell on the house and when some one came Rose would tell me. Through it all, Julian never left my side he asked me all about vampires and what all goes on with us and how to be changed. One day we were out in the horse stalls and one of the horses got upset and trampled him. I didn’t think he would live so I gave him some of my blood and healed him. Later that night he hung himself and forced the change.” Erica paused.
I looked at her and saw she was crying. “He said it was for us. I believed him and we bonded. But then his ability manifested, things have changed. He is more powerful then me and he isn’t even a year old yet.” She takes another long pause and looks me in the eye. “I’m scared. I think I created a monster.” I pull her into my arms and let her cry for a moment.
I was right we can’t be apart ever again.
Erica went back to Julian and swore she would come check on me tomorrow. So I clean up washing away 5 months of regret and blood from my body. I don’t sleep. I can’t. What ever power Julian has over Erica haunts me. All I want to do is save her from him but she tells me to stay back. I don’t see how a new born can have power over Erica. I am 64 years older maybe I can put a stop to his madness. She didn’t tell me what his ability is but it scares her. She was always fearless in my eyes.
She doesn’t come over I worry more into the night till the point I go searching for her. It was easy to follow her sent through the woods. It was the only thing left to smell after the rain washed away all other scents. I get to a large house outside the town and I see Erica in the kitchen terrified then Julian walks out the house and disappears into the night.
I don’t know how long he will be gone but I take my chance now and run into the house. “Blaine you shouldn’t have come,” Erica looks out the window.
“He is gone. Went the opposite way I came.” I take her hand. “Come on, we need to leave. ”
“No Blaine, he and I are bonded he will know where I am.” She pulls her hand back but I don’t let her go.
“I will protect you Erica.” I tell her pulling her closer.
Her face scrunches in confusion, taking a look out the window then back to me she steps into my arms. “We better hurry.” She says but jumps out of my hands, “he’s here.” She whispers barely audible. I step to her but she pushes me away.
The front door opens and Julian comes in. He sees me standing beside Erica, “So the prodigal brother returns. I should really thank you for leaving that night. I always forgot about the people in the past but without you I would be married to Erica and probably not hold this much power.” Julian flicks all the dishes off the table with the swipe of his hand. I gasp at the mess on the floor.
“Erica,” I say in a warning voice but she looks petrified.
“I — I release you. ” she stammers as both of them fall from the hold they gave each other. I catch her and hold her up as she regained balance.
“What did you just do.” Julian step to us.
“I will protect you.” I tell Erica again, standing right bring her.
“I released you from our bond. You can sense my feeling anymore or control me.” Her voice is shaky and her legs shake as Julian's face grows angry.
“NO!” He shouts the cabinets fly open flinging glass across the kitchen. I step in front of Erica protectively. As he charges at me.
Erica screams as I flip him onto the table and it gives under the weight. He fights me back. His fist catching my face pushing my jaw, I feel my teeth crack. I cry out in pain. There is no way a newborn to be this powerful. He rolls over throwing me to my back. I return the punch to his lip which spits open covering his chin in blood. I catch Erica running. The second of distraction was enough to give Julian the upper hand he chokes me with one hand and Erica's is thrown back into the kitchen with his other. I throw him off me his back slamming into the ceiling then crashing down were I had laid.
I get to Erica, her head is bleeding and her shoulder is locked behind her. “Erica, you need to run.” I say but I am thrown back by Julian. I slam into the china cabinet as class rains over me I regain my strength pushing up off the floor, I look at him.
He looks crazy his eyes look burgundy red instead of brown “How do we rebound!” He shouts at Erica. She is crying and shaking her words aren't coming out though she is moving her mouth. He picks her up and slams her to the counter. “TELL ME!” His voice booms. giving me the adrenaline to rise and attack him.
I race after him and throw him through the pantry door. That particular ticked him off as he stepped out the door he throws Erica in the air and has her pinned to the roof. Then he charges after me. I knock him in the nose hearing the bone snap blood gushes over his mouth and he blares his now bloody teeth as he punches me repeatedly in the stomach. I spit up blood but only to return the punches to his side. I grip his shirt and throw him through the wall and Erica falls to the floor.
I rush over to her as she coughs up blood from the fall. Glass is embedded in her back. She cries out in pain as she sits up. “Get out. I will hold him off. Go to Rose.” I tell her.
Erica shakes her head. “I can’t. It hurts to much I haven feed in a week.”
“Can you drink my blood?” I ask.
“You will die if I do. He will kill you.” Erica says but I already bit my wrist and shoved it to her mouth. her lips latch on onto my wrist; I moan as she sucks but she turn her head.
“I cant Blaine. I refuse to let you die.”
“Dammit Erica, just do it. I fed last night I will be fine.” I feel a sharp pain in my back as Erica cries my name.
I fall to my side as the chair leg pierces through my body. I feel Erica's arms on me for a second before she is pulled away. I try to fight the darkness that washes over me for Erica.
Her cries feel my ears. “Do leave him here to die. You can have me. Please don’t leave him.” Her voice fades but I still hear her. “I have to save him. Let me save him.”
I try to move but I feel the leg scrap against my heart. Julian missed my heart by centimeters I reach for leg and pull. Pain to excruciating for words occur. My vision is blurred with black and white dots as my breathing stutters. I give the leg another pull and scream to the heavens as it falls to the floor. I try to sit up but the whole room is growing dark.
