March flew by in a flurry of love and healing. The month saw various nights of cuddling and love making and ice cream sundaes. Days were filled with school and friends and laughter. Everyone was trying to soak up the precious moments.
They'd be graduating at the end of May and their lives would take totally different turns.
Everyone was slowly understanding that this was it, these were the last few months, Nationals would be the last competition.
One day in April, Kurt and Blaine were at the park down the road from Kurt's house, spinning slowly on the merry go round. The park was deserted and the clouds above were thick and heavy with an impending rainstorm.
"It's going to be so weird," Kurt was saying.
"I thought you'd be happy to get out of high school," Blaine replied.
"I am," Kurt nodded. "I'm going to miss everyone though. Mercedes is going to California. I'll never see her."
"Rachel's going to New York though. We'll see her a lot. And a bunch of people are going to State. We'll see them when we come back to visit," Blaine assured him.
Kurt really liked the way Blaine said 'we' instead of 'you' or 'I'.
Thunder boomed over their heads and a misty sheen of rain began to fall.
"Ugh, thank god I'm not wearing anything of much value," Kurt groaned as he climbed off the merry go round. He held out his hand to Blaine. "Coming?"
Blaine gave him an odd smile but allowed Kurt to pull him up. As soon as he stood, the rain began to pour heavily and Kurt dragged him off the playground, ready to dart back home as quickly as possible. But right when they reached the sidewalk, Blaine tugged him back and pulled him into his arms.
"What are you doing?" Kurt nearly had to shout to be heard through the rain.
Blaine put Kurt's hand on his soaked shoulder and slid his own down to settle on Kurt's waist. He brought their clasped hands up and leaned his head close to Kurt's ear.
"Dancing with you in the rain," he said simply, beginning to lead them around slowly on the sidewalk.
Kurt was too stunned to do anything but follow. The rain fell harder, drenching their clothes and destroying his hair, but when he looked down at Blaine's wet face and saw him smiling up at him, Kurt stopped caring about the state of his clothes or his hair. Blaine led them expertly, Kurt's feet following him on the pavement. Blaine's curls were dark and heavy and raindrops were catching on his eyelashes. Kurt smiled back, his light eyes shining in the dreary weather and when he felt a little too cold, he let his head fall to rest on Blaine's wet shoulder. Blaine's neck was warm against his nose and even though he still smelled of sandalwood and cinnamon, the rain made him smell like spring and Kurt couldn't help but press his rain covered face against the skin there. He kissed the little spot just below Blaine's ear and felt his lover's hand slide around his back to pull him closer.
They had no music, but they had the thunder and the sound of the rain hitting the ground and the rooftops, and they had the sound of raindrops colliding with the metal structures on the playground behind them to add a little tink tink tink to the natural melody.
"I love you," Kurt breathed against Blaine's wet skin.
Blaine turned his head so he could whisper in Kurt's ear.
"Will you go to prom with me?"
Kurt had to stop dancing, but they still stood there in the rain as he lifted his head from Blaine's shoulder to look into his beautiful hazel eyes.
"Really?" Kurt breathed. Because yeah, they were boyfriends, so if they were going to go they'd obviously go with each other. But he didn't know Blaine even wanted to go to prom.
"Yeah," Blaine said, his laugh a little breathless. "I want to go with you. And I want to dance with you and I want to drink sparkling cider out of little champagne flutes. I want to see you all dressed up with somewhere to go and I want to get a hotel room for the night and then I want us to drink real champagne and then I want to hold you and kiss you until the sun rises."
Kurt was simply speechless. How did Blaine even come up with these things? How in the world did he know exactly what to say to make Kurt's heart beat that much faster and make him fall that much more in love? How was he even real and how did Kurt Hummel get so lucky?
"Yes," Kurt finally said, the rain still falling. "I want that too. Everything."
Blaine's smile could have lit up the entire world.
"Yeah?" he wanted to make sure.
"Yeah," Kurt replied, his own smile nearly splitting his face. "Yes."
Blaine tossed his head back and laughed, happy as could possibly be. "I love you!" he shouted, wrapping both his arms around Kurt, lifting him off the ground and spinning him around in the rain. Kurt couldn't help but giggle, even though he was protesting and kept yelling 'put me down, you beast!'
They ran back to the house, hand in hand, freezing in the spring rainstorm. They received an odd look from Finn, who was on the sofa, but paid him no mind as they stumbled into Kurt's room, sure to look the door and spring down the stairs.
They were shivering in their soaked clothes as their lips met, their faces still wet and their lips trembling slightly. Kurt moaned into the heat of Blaine's mouth, sucking up any amount of warmth he could get at as Blaine's cool hands slid up under Kurt's wet t-shirt. Kurt didn't know where to go because he was freezing, they both were, but Blaine's tongue was so hot on his and the kiss seemed like the only thing he could hold onto at this point. His own hands trailed up and fisted into Blaine's rain-drenched curls, drops falling down from the dark mass of hair to cover their faces.
He didn't remember Blaine peeling them out of their soaked clothes, didn't remember them tumbling into Kurt's warm bed, heedless of their wet bodies, didn't remember Blaine's fingers inside him, stretching him slowly and easily.
He only knew that he was on his hands and knees and Blaine just slid inside him with one long stroke and he was full and it was perfect. Blaine knelt over him, wrapping his arm under Kurt to splay his fingers on Kurt's chest and kissing down his back. Kurt whimpered when Blaine pulled out and pushed slowly back in because it felt like they were made for this, felt like they fit together like two pieces of a puzzle and it was so right and Blaine was moving so easily. His thrusts were practiced and he pushed in deeply, causing Kurt to drop his head and moan when Blaine trailed his tongue down Kurt's still damp skin.
They were still shivering from the drops of rain that clung to their bodies and the gasped together when Blaine lifted Kurt from his position on his hands, pulling him back so Kurt's spine was arching right against Blaine's chest. Kurt used what strength he had left in his legs to raise and lower himself onto Blaine's lap, Blaine meeting him with every thrust. Blaine let one of his hands glide down Kurt's side, down over his hip, and down to rub with a forceful, flat palm over Kurt's thigh. His lips sucked and kissed at the skin of Kurt's damp neck while his other hand ghosted over Kurt's pale stomach and up to his chest, right over his heart. Their hips continued to work and Kurt wrapped his arm behind him clutch at the small of Blaine's back as Blaine breathed heavy and rough into Kurt's ear.
"Yes…" Kurt breathed when Blaine hit that spot inside him. "Blaine…"
"I love you," Blaine moaned when Kurt's other hand came up to twine his fingers into Blaine's wet curly hair. "I love you, Kurt…" He thrust his hips again and Kurt mewled loudly.
"…You too," Kurt hissed as Blaine licked wetly at the top of Kurt's spine. "Love you too…"
Kurt nearly started crying because they were fucking so intimately and their skin was slick with rain water and sweat and Blaine was all around him, inside him, he was breathing him in. He felt Blaine's hand slide down from his chest to grip his erection and sweet, holy, hell, his hold was perfect and Blaine hit that spot inside him one more time. Blaine hissed Kurt's name, jerking his hips up and Kurt could feel warmth spreading inside him. Blaine pumped him once, twice more and Kurt was coming too, his back flush with Blaine's chest and Blaine's harsh panting and whimpering in his ear. But they were locked in that position, arms around each other with Blaine's head pressed against Kurt's neck as they rode out the waves of pleasure until it was only a dull throbbing in their limbs.
He didn't remember Blaine pulling out of him, he didn't remember Blaine cleaning him up with a soft cloth, didn't remember Blaine climbing back into bed next to him. All he knew was that he was warm now and it still smelled like a spring rainstorm in his bedroom.
They were still naked and dozing on and off when a loud knock sounded on Kurt's bedroom door, jarring them both horribly.
"Kurt! Dinner's ready!"
Kurt groaned at his father's voice.
"Be up soon!" he shouted back.
"Why is there a…trail of water leading to your door?" his father wondered.
Blaine began laughing and had to muffle the sound by pressing his face against Kurt's shoulder.
"Stop it," Kurt hissed. "Blaine and I got caught in the rain on our way home from the park!"
"Oh, Blaine's here too?"
"Yes, dad! We'll be out in a minute!"
"…OH," came Burt's realization. "Yeah…see you in a bit."
Kurt flopped back down onto the bed, sighing in agitation. "We should get dressed."
"My clothes are wet," Blaine reminded him, cuddling closer to his boyfriend. "And it smells nice here."
Well, Kurt couldn't deny that point. But if they didn't get out of bed soon, there would be questions. "You have sweatpants in my drawer."
"Mmm," was all Blaine murmured, pressing his nose into Kurt's still damp hair. "I love having sex with you."
Kurt flushed immediately for some reason. Yeah, they had sex a lot, and yeah, they both seemed to enjoy it. But to hear those words fall out of Blaine's mouth was…he didn't know, but it was nice.
"I love it too," he admitted quietly. Because he did, he loved it. And he hoped that Blaine loved it enough to the point where he didn't ever want to have sex with anyone else because Kurt was quite happy only ever sleeping with Blaine for the rest of his life.
"Yeah?" Blaine asked, propping his head up on his arm and trailing the fingers of his other hand over Kurt's smooth chest.
"Yeah," Kurt assured him. "You're all I'll ever need."
Blaine smiled lazily, his tired eyes blinking down at his lover. "I think the same thing all the time."
"You do?" Kurt asked hopefully.
"Every time," Blaine said with surety. "Every single time."
"You don't think you'll…ever get bored of me?"
"No," Blaine said, laughing quietly. "Never."
The corners of Kurt's lips turned up into a smile as well. "That makes me happy."
"I'm glad," Blaine whispered, leaning down and kissing Kurt's lips gently. "You were right, though. We should get dressed before your dad comes back."
"Ugh," Kurt grumbled. "Moment killer."
"I only speak the truth!" Blaine said loudly before proceeding to tickle Kurt.
"Ah! No!" Kurt giggled, curling in on himself. "Stop – ah! Ahah!"
"You never learned the magic word!"
Outside Kurt's door, Burt was poised to knock once more. But from inside, he heard the boys giggling and screaming.
Burt smiled to himself. He'd give them five more minutes.
At dinner, Blaine was clad in his pair of sweatpants and his spare t-shirt. His hair was fluffy from drying after the rain and Kurt couldn't keep his eyes off him. He was just so damn adorable.
"Rachel's mad at me for something," Finn was saying.
"What for?" Carole asked.
"I don't know," Finn admitted. "I haven't done anything wrong. At least not lately."
"What'd she say to you?" Kurt asked.
"Uh…it's more like, what she doesn't say."
"…What?"
"Well," Finn explained. "We were in the hall today, talking to Mike and Tina and Mike asked Tina to prom and she said yes. And then Rachel just kept…looking at me. And I thought she wanted me to kiss her so I kissed her but she still kept looking at me. And then the rest of day she just kept looking at me like…she was waiting for something, I don't know. It was weird. Oh and then like, when we were leaving after Glee practice she just threw her hands up and ran off to her car. I don't get it."
"Um, Finn?" Blaine asked. "Have you asked Rachel to the prom?"
Finn went quiet and gave a small frown. "Well no but she's my girlfriend. Who else am I gonna go with?"
"Finn, you still have to ask her," Kurt told his brother.
"…Why? What – do you think she wants to go with someone else?"
Blaine started laughing and Kurt sighed. "No, she thinks you don't want to go with her."
"What? Why wouldn't I want to go with her?"
"Well you haven't asked her. Prom's in a few weeks, you should probably do that," Kurt said.
"But shouldn't like, I mean we're already together, I don't get why I have to ask her. Shouldn't we just like…shouldn't it be obvious?"
"Blaine asked me," Kurt put in. "And we're together."
"He asked you to prom?" Carole squealed. "Kurt, I'm so excited for you boys!"
"Me too," Kurt said, lowering his head to hide his huge grin when he felt Blaine's hand settle on his thigh under the table.
"Wait so – even though she's my girlfriend, I still have to ask her?" Finn tried to get his facts straight.
"It's your best bet," Blaine said. "She's probably been waiting for you to ask her since you guys saw Mike ask Tina."
Finn looked completely stumped. "Weird. Huh. Well I guess I'll ask her tomorrow. How'd you ask Kurt? Because like, Mike gave Tina a rose and everything."
Now it was Blaine's turn to lower his head and grin.
"Oh god," Finn said in horror. "You didn't ask him, like…while you guys were-"
"Finn, don't even finish that sentence 'cause I don't wanna know if that's what happened," Burt said swiftly.
"No," Kurt said to stop his family's mind from jumping into the gutter. "Actually, we were down at the park and we were dancing in the rain and that's when he asked me."
Finn dropped his fork and threw his hands up in the air. "I give up," Finn declared. "I'll never be able to top that."
"Rachel doesn't know that's how I asked him though," Blaine pointed out. "So she won't expect anything. You just need to ask her."
"Yeah," Finn mumbled. "How do you even come up with this stuff, dude? I suck at romance crap."
Blaine shrugged.
"It's how you feel for the person," Carole explained. "If you love them, you want to show them that. It doesn't have to be over the top. It's the little things that add up."
"I tell her I love her all the time."
"It's nice to be shown it though," Kurt said. "People say things all the time. But it's the actions that really sell it."
"You have way too much faith in me," Blaine commented. "I don't do that much."
"Dude, you got him a fish because the color of it reminded you of his eyes," Finn reminded Blaine. "Who even thinks of that?
Blaine flushed pink.
"You got him a coat from freakin' Paris," Finn continued. "And you took him on a picnic and gave him a promise ring. And you sing to him in Glee all the time!"
"Okay, so maybe I'm a little bit romantic," Blaine conceded. "But I don't think about it. I just do it because it'd make him happy or because I want to."
"And that's they key," Carole sigh with finality.
"Why do I have the feeling we're both going to end up taking tips on romance from you?" Burt asked Blaine.
Blaine went kind of pale.
Kurt burst into laughter.
"So my parents reserved us a room at the hotel," Blaine told Kurt one morning, the week before prom.
"That was nice of them," Kurt remarked as he closed his locker door.
"And they want to know how many people are coming with us so they can figure out what size limo to get," Blaine added.
"Your parents are paying for the limo too?" Kurt asked in horror. "Blaine, they don't have to do that."
"I tried telling them that," Blaine said with a shrug. "They refused to listen."
"What's this talk about a limo?" Jared wondered as he walked up to the couple.
"Blaine's parents want to pay for the limo," Kurt explained. "We should all chip in."
"They're not going to accept your money," Blaine snorted.
Kurt sighed. "Fine, fine. We'll have to figure out how many people want to ride with us. Finn and Rachel for sure. Jared, are you going with anyone?"
"Santana asked me to go with her!" Jared said happily. "As like, friends and all. But still!"
"That's awesome," Blaine said with a genuine smile.
"Wait, so who's Noah going with?" Kurt had to ask.
"The Puckasaurus is rollin' solo on prom night," Puck said as he waltzed over to them with a cocky grin. "Don't wanna be held down by one chick all night. I can dance and grind on whoever I want."
"How lovely for you," Kurt drawled. "Did you want to ride with us anyway?"
"I'm down," Puck replied.
"Jared?" Kurt asked.
"I'll have to ask Santana, but I don't see why not."
"So that makes seven of us so far," Blaine concluded. "You think everyone else will want to come too?"
"Probably," Kurt nodded.
As it turned out, when they entered the choir room later, EVERYONE wanted to ride in the limo that Blaine's parents were willing to pay for.
"Okay, so prom starts at seven. Did we want to go eat first? And I swear to god, if any of you say Breadstix I will not hesitate to slap you," Kurt declared. "We should go somewhere else."
"But…Breadstix," Santana pleaded. "The never ending, delicious, garlic-y breadsticks."
"There's a really nice restaurant near the hotel the prom is actually being held at," Blaine told everyone. "We can go there."
Everyone yammered away, attempting to make plans for prom night, the girls figuring out places to get their hair and nails done and telling the boys that yes, they needed to dress according to the colors their dates' dresses were. Mr. Schuester tried to shut them up, seeing as Nationals was the week after prom, but no such luck. He hid out in his office for the rest of the class period.
"So…what color are you wearing?" Blaine asked Kurt, both of them seated off to the side, away from the general mayhem of things. "I mean, I don't know if you planned on wearing a black suit or-"
"My tie will be a very nice shade of blue," Kurt told him, not wanting him to flounder any more than necessary. "And yours?"
Blaine grinned. "Me too."
"I'll expect a white flower then," Kurt said primly. "For my boutonnière."
"Kay," Blaine said, still grinning furiously. "I'm excited."
"So am I," Kurt admitted quietly. "Will you…you'll really dance with me? In front of everyone?"
"Of course I will," Blaine didn't hesitate to say. "Why wouldn't I?"
Kurt shrugged and looked down at his lap.
"Everyone that goes to this school already sees us holding hands or kissing in the hallway," Blaine pointed out. "This isn't any different."
"We'll be the only gay couple dancing together," Kurt said softly.
"And we'll be the best looking, most in love couple on the dance floor," Blaine returned, nudging Kurt's shoulder.
Kurt blushed but he couldn't hold back a smile at Blaine's words.
"My parents will want to take pictures," Blaine added. "So you should get to my house earlier than everyone else will."
"You don't want me to just stay the night on Friday?" Kurt asked curiously.
"No!" Blaine stated. "We have to get ready separately so we can dazzle each other with our beauty when you come over, of course."
"Ah," Kurt said, shaking his head. "But of course."
"You're going to look amazing," Blaine whispered into Kurt's ear. "I know it."
"Of course I'll look amazing. It's you and your hair I'm worried about."
