Monday started off like any other normal day. Blaine woke up, showered, got dressed, ate a bagel, and Kurt picked him up for school. They stopped for coffee on the way and walked into the school as a very happy couple. It had been quite a while since Blaine had spoken with Sue regarding Karofsky, and so far nothing had happened. He held Kurt's hand in the halls and he kissed him at his locker and nothing happened.
Regionals were on Thursday and New Directions had their routines down perfectly. Blaine actually felt sort of bad because, after having been part of New Directions and seeing how well these numbers were put together, he knew the Warblers would have never had a chance even if they did make it to Regionals. He knew Vocal Adrenaline was going to be a problem though, and that's what everyone was discussing at lunch.
"At least we know they don't have Jesse anymore," Tina was saying, "since he graduated at the end of last year."
"Yeah if they didn't fail him on purpose like they do with other people," Puck said.
"No, he's at college now," Rachel said.
Everyone paused and stared at her.
"You still keep in contact with him? Even after he crushed an egg on your head?" Kurt asked in outrage.
"He never deleted me from his friend list on Facebook," Rachel clarified. "So I did a little spying."
"Ah. Well, then, I approve," Kurt said.
"This Jesse guy crushed an egg on your head?" Blaine wondered.
"Yeah," Rachel replied sadly. "After the rest of Vocal Adrenaline threw them at me."
"How terrible," Blaine said.
"And she's a vegan. Double terrible," Tina agreed.
Blaine tugged at his scarf. Jesus, why the hell was it so hot in this damn lunch room?
Kurt gasped and turned bright red beside him. Blaine raised an eyebrow in curiosity.
"Damn, Anderson. If that ain't a hickey, then I don't know what is," Puck said.
"Wha-"
"Kurt it looks like you attacked his neck!" Rachel said through her giggling.
"I didn't! I…it was…oh god…" Kurt groaned.
Blaine brought his fingers up to his neck and, hey, ow, it was kind sore. He turned his eyes to Kurt.
"You said not to stop!" his boyfriend squeaked.
The entire table burst into laughter. Puck gave Kurt a high five and Finn just kind of sat there looking uncomfortable.
In midst of the giggles, Dave Karofsky sat at a table nearby with a bunch of the football guys. When he glanced over at the table, all he saw was a giant blue and purple spot on Blaine's neck and Kurt blushing furiously, leaning into Blaine's shoulder. Blaine brought his arm around Kurt and kissed the top of his forehead.
Inside, Dave was fuming.
Lunch ended and Blaine decided it might be best to put his scarf back on. Classes resumed.
Later in the day, during passing period before Glee, Blaine and Kurt were at their lockers as usual. The halls were filled with chattering students, all waiting for the last class of the day to be over with.
Blaine never saw it coming.
Out of damn near nowhere, Karofsky walked up to Blaine and shoved him hard into the lockers.
"I told you to keep your fucking hands off him!" Karofsky shouted. His hands were tight around Blaine's neck.
Here's the thing about people. Every single person has a point where stress and secrecy all come to a head. Blaine knew this. He just wasn't expecting a reaction as explosive as this.
"Let him go!" Kurt yelled, attempting to pry Karofsky's hands off of Blaine's throat. "Why are you-"
But Karofsky had had enough. He shoved Kurt away, causing the boy to stumble. It gave him enough time to release his hold on Blaine's throat, grab him by the shoulders, and throw the smaller boy harshly to the ground.
As Blaine fell, he thought he could brace himself with his hands. It turned out though that he could only get his left hand down fast enough and it landed at a seriously awkward, causing the weight of his body to land on top of it.
He heard a snap below him.
He screamed.
"Blaine!" Kurt shouted. He attempted to rush past Karofsky.
But the burly football player was having none of that. He grabbed Kurt's arm and Kurt struggled with all his might.
Blaine felt tears clouding his vision and he tried to scream Kurt's name but he could barely breathe and it felt like his throat was sewn shut. Why was no one helping? Why was everyone just standing around looking sad or shocked? HELP HIM, Blaine screamed internally.
"You're a fucking faggot and you shouldn't even be here, you little queer," Karofsky spat.
Kurt was trying, he was trying to pull away, he was trying to get Karofsky's fingers to stop digging into his arm but Karofsky grabbed his free one and he was instantly terrified. He did the only thing he knew to do, and that was to fight with words.
"Just because you're a closet case doesn't mean you get to treat people like this!" He yelled into the other boys face.
All around them, people were gasping. Karofsky went red with anger and the only thought in his mind was that he had to shut this kid up.
He pivoted, taking Kurt with him and HURLED the petrified boy into the closest row of lockers. Kurt hit the metal with a vicious force and his head hit the vents of one of the lockers.
A loud, disgusting crack echoed through the hallway.
"KAROFSKY!" came a voice from behind the students. The crowd parted to reveal a very pissed off Sue Sylvester storming towards him.
Karofsky made to run, but Puck, Sam, Finn, Mike, Anthony, and two other guys blocked his path and grabbed him.
Blaine stood shakily and slowly made his way to Kurt, who was still standing, his eyes wide with shock and his breathing rapid.
"Kurt?" Blaine whispered, reaching out to his boyfriend with his good hand. "Are you okay?"
"I…yeah…I think so," Kurt replied.
Kurt's knees gave out and he began to slide down the lockers.
A sticky, wet trail followed the path of his head.
"Oh god, Kurt!" Blaine shrieked. He reached his hand behind Kurt's head to cradle it. He could feel a deep gash in the skin and he could feel the warmth of blood spreading over his fingers. "Someone call an ambulance NOW!"
Rachel was the first with her phone out. She dialed 911.
"Take Karofsky to Figgins' office right now!" Sue ordered. The boys complied, though Karofsky was most certainly struggling. "KAROFSKY!" she shouted again, "I hope you realize that there were plenty of witnesses to this and if neither of these boys' fathers file a law suit, you'd better be damn sure that I WILL."
He was dragged away. Sue bolted over to Kurt and Blaine. She looked up to see everyone still standing around. "GET TO CLASS, ALL OF YOU!" she snapped. People scattered.
"What is it?" Sue asked, turning back to Blaine.
"He…oh god…" Blaine couldn't get the words out quick enough through his tears. "There's blood…there's a cut…I can't…he's bleeding so much."
Rachel snapped her phone shut. "They're on their way. They said to keep him conscious for as long as possible," Rachel said swiftly. "I'm going to go get Mr. Schue."
She raced down the hallway.
"Blaine?" Kurt asked quietly.
"I'm here, baby, I'm right here," Blaine said immediately, still holding the back of Kurt's head.
"What…what happened? I don't…remember getting on the ground…"
"You just slid down, you're okay."
"Did…my head hurts so bad," Kurt said squeezing his eyes shut and opening them again. "Why is everything so fuzzy?"
Blaine looked frantically at Sue.
"Porcelain, are you dizzy at all?" she asked.
"I think…oh god…sick…"
Sue moved behind Blaine. Kurt proceeded to vomit between his legs that were splayed out on the floor.
"He's got a concussion," Sue confirmed. "Take off your scarf and put it on the back of his head so you can apply pressure to the source of the blood."
"I can't," Blaine choked. "I think my hand or my wrist is…is broken."
"Kurt! Blaine!" Mr. Schue came racing down the hall. "Rachel just told me what happ – oh god, is that blood?"
"No, we just decided to cover the lockers in ketchup today, Will," Sue snapped as she took Blaine's scarf from around his neck. She moved to the other side of Kurt and pressed her hand to his forehead. Blaine slowly pulled his hand away as Sue made to cover the bleeding gash with his scarf.
"I don't…oh god," Blaine cried. "Kurt? Are you still with us?"
Sue tilted Kurt's head back so she could apply a bit of pressure to the wound. Kurt's eyelids were heavy.
"Blaine," Kurt said quietly, "hurts."
"I know, baby, I know," Blaine said. He attempted to take off his sweater so that he could wipe the vomit off Kurt's chin. "Ah!" he hissed.
Mr. Schue bent down. "What's wrong?"
Blaine bit his lips, tears still falling onto his cheeks. "M-my hand," he groaned.
Mr. Schue slowly peeled the sweater off of Blaine's arm. When he pulled the fabric away, Blaine's wrist and most of his hand were swollen horribly and were bruising rapidly. His wrist was at an awkward angle.
"I can't – it hurts."
"Yeah, definitely broken," Mr. Schue confirmed, putting a hand on Blaine's shoulder. "Come on, we can go get you a sling from the nurse-"
"NO!" Blaine recoiled immediately, snatching his sweater from Mr. Schue with his good hand. "I'm not leaving him here!"
"Blaine, your hand is broken," his teacher said.
"Does it look like I give a fuck?" Blaine barked, instantly turning back to Kurt. He used his sweater and gently wiped the sick off of Kurt's chin.
"There's no need for that kind of langu-"
Blaine tossed the sweater aside and snapped his head back around to look at Mr. Schue. "I don't care what's appropriate or what's not. My boyfriend is on the ground bleeding from his head. He has a severe concussion and I don't know how much blood he's lost and I'm flipping SHIT because this is my entire fucking fault!"
"ANDERSON!" Sue shouted.
Blaine's face crumbled. "I should have said something."
"You did say something. You said it to me. There was no reason for that kid to blow up like that. You listen to me right now. This was not your fault, you got it? IT WASN'T."
"But I-"
"Don't argue with me, Doe-Face!"
Blaine snapped his mouth shut and turned back to Kurt.
"Kurt?"
Kurt's eyelids were getting heavier by the second. Blaine knew that it was best to keep concussed victims awake for as long as possible until they could get to a doctor for fear of falling into a coma.
"Kurt!" Blaine shouted. He put his hand on his boyfriend's thigh and squeezed harshly.
"I'm…so tired…"
"I know you are, Kurt, but you have to stay awake," Blaine said. "Can you look at me?"
Kurt opened his eyes just enough so that he could focus on Blaine. "Hi," he said with a sleepy smile.
Blaine smiled through his tears. "Hi, baby."
"My head still hurts."
Blaine nodded. "I know," he choked, a sad, pained expression on his face. "The ambulance will be here soon though."
"They'll make it better?"
"Yes," Blaine promised. "But you have to stay awake."
"Just wanna sleep…I wanna sleep next to you."
Oh god, Blaine thought, his heart shattering. Please let all of this be okay, please let Kurt be alright.
"I-I want to sleep next to you too, baby. But we can't," he sniffled, "because we're at school, remember?"
"Oh, yeah…"
They heard the sirens of the ambulance approaching. Mr. Schue raced out to meet them and explain the situation.
"I love you," Kurt whispered. "But I have to sleep now."
Blaine's heart just about pounded through his chest. "Kurt, no! Stay awake! They're almost here!"
"…can't…"
"Baby, please!" Blaine shouted.
But it was too late. Kurt's eyes fell shut and did not reopen. Blaine's breath caught in his throat. He raised his eyes to meet Sue's.
"He'll be alright," Sue assured him.
Blaine wasn't as certain. He just hoped and prayed and wished that he could see Kurt's beautiful blue eyes at least one more time. He just wanted him to wake up. He had to wake up. People wake up after concussions all the time, right? They wake up, they do. He could hear the rushed footsteps of the medics from down the hall. He burst into tears, the sobs wracking his body. His hand ached fiercely. He brought it to his chest and clasped Kurt's hand in his other.
"I love you, too," he whispered. Please wake up, he thought.
