He wasn't entirely alone though. There was Blaine. Although they had been virtually attached at the hip for the past fortnight, Kurt still didn't know much about Blaine. They usually only conversed about schoolwork or their mutual hatred of Rachel. And the truth was that it would probably never amount to more than that. The thought of opening up to another person was still scary. But Blaine isn't like anyone else he's ever known, and surely that had to count for something.
He hadn't told Blaine that he had moved here by himself, but he suddenly found himself wishing that he had. He wished that he was here, maybe then his apartment wouldn't feel so empty. But as if Blaine would want to. He probably had better things to do. In fact, he was probably writing up Monday's physics notes at this moment. So all Kurt could do was sit alone and wait for the weekend to pass.
Then, as if Blaine had known exactly what Kurt was thinking, Kurt's phone rang.
“Hey Kurt, it's Blaine.” He sounded exhausted and spoke quickly.
“Hey, what's-”
“I hope you aren't busy. Anyway, I'm just going to say this before I chicken out. Do you want to go out with me?”
“What-” Kurt began before being cut off again.
“I know we haven't known each other for very long and that you're focused on school and don't care about anyone else but...” Blaine paused for a minute, most likely to catch his breath, because there was no way that any normal person could speak that quickly.
“Yes.” Kurt gasped as if he had suddenly become as breathless as Blaine.
“And I know that I- What?”
“Yes. I'd love to go out with you.” Now Kurt was smiling from ear to ear.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line “Oh okay. Great. Well... I'll uh...”
Kurt felt slightly cocky, knowing he had this effect on Blaine, and used the situation to his advantage.
“Be at 52 Market Street in an hour.”
Exactly one hour later and Blaine was standing at Kurt's door. He'd changed his shirt 7 times and tossed up between gelling his hair or not. He opted to leave it natural. Maybe Kurt would like it better that way. Or maybe he would be able to run his fingers through it if Blaine left it that way. Not that he would really want to, Blaine thought. Perhaps it was too soon for that.
He raised his fist and knocked gently, not wanting to startle Kurt or his family. A moment later, Kurt appeared, dressed similarly to Blaine. Blaine's mouth gaped open a little as he took in the sight before him.
“Hi.” Kurt leaned against the doorframe with a coy smile.
“Hey.” Blaine replied, his speech almost slurred.
“You really aren't great with words, are you?” Kurt knew he shouldn't be laughing, but he couldn't
help himself.
“Only when I'm nervous.” He joked.
“Well there's no reason for that,” Kurt moved away from the doorframe back into his apartment.
“Come in.”
Kurt's apartment was decorated much to Blaine's taste, but like Kurt, he couldn't help but notice how empty it seemed.
“Where are your family?”
“I moved here alone. I needed to get away and I didn't expect my Dad to come all this way just for me. And I'll be away at college soon and-” Kurt stopped himself suddenly, not wanting to give away too much too soon. After all, they had only known each other for two weeks.
“You must get lonely.” Blaine looked up at Kurt with the same warm eyes that had greeted him back on the first day of school.
Kurt wanted to say yes. He wanted to tell Blaine that he longed for someone to spend the nights with him. To sit on the couch and watch project runway with. To sit down over dinner with. To lie in bed and talk with until the early hours of the morning.
“No.”
Blaine ducked his head back down and an awkward silence followed. “Why did you want to meet here?”
“I just thought you should know. About me. I don't want to rush into anything but I don't want to lie to you-” But he already had. This was just like Kurt, breaking promises he hadn't even made yet.
“What you said about being lonely?” He continued. “I am. I do...I'm sorry.”
“It's okay. You know, I'm here alone too,” Blaine confessed “Same reason. I had to get away and it wasn't fair to drag my Mom along with me.”
Kurt doubted that Blaine had been in the exact same situation as him, but was still unsure if Blaine wanted to talk about it or not.
“If you don't mind me asking...Why did you have to get away?”
Blaine thought for a moment before he answered. “You know, a lot of people aren't all that keen on us,” He didn't have to explain what he meant by us, Kurt knew exactly what he meant and
understood why he had to leave.
“Things are a little better here. I think it's because I met you.”
Kurt didn't know what to say. Luckily he didn't have to, as Blaine once again began to ramble.
“I don't know if it's too soon to ask this or not but you know, if you're lonely... God this is going to sound crazy..”
“I already know you're crazy, just say it.” Kurt found himself laughing again.
“You could move in with me,” Blaine paused again after registering the shocked expression on Kurt's face. “No, forget it, I told you it was stupid.”
“No, really Blaine, it's not. I have a better idea though.” Kurt took a step towards Blaine, leaning in close, giving Blaine a taste of his own medicine. “How about you move in here.”
“Really?”
“Of course, I mean, you can see how hollow this place is. It would be nice to have someone else here.”
Blaine's face lit up in delight and without any warning, he crashed into Kurt and wrapped his arms around him tightly. Kurt was going to try to start convincing himself that Blaine was just a boy, but he knew that it was too late for that now. He was falling for Blaine Anderson, and he would soon be moving in and there was no way that he could avoid him then.
“You will not regret this.” Blaine murmured as he pulled away, as if he could sense Kurt's nerves. He still wasn't quite sure that he was making the right decision, even though he sounded so sure to Blaine. “I know you wanted to be alone, but this is the right choice.”
Kurt knew he couldn't shut everyone off forever. Sooner or later he would have to start to regain some trust in people. For his own good.
“So... About that date?” Kurt began slowly. “I mean it would be such a waste to have you get all dressed up to come over here and just talk to me.”
Now Blaine was the one laughing. “Of course. Follow me.”
