"Oh I know. So, coffee later? I'll take you. We could do some of our project too." Blaine said back, the smile obvious in his voice. “That would be fine. I haven't had coffee in a while. Finn never wants’ to take me, you know?" Kurt replied.
They took off towards the French room, hands held together, but this time, it felt different. Like after what happened yesterday in Kurt's bedroom had altered there relationship and the hand holding was a show of understanding, of reassurance, and almost of intimacy. Don’t get ahead of yourself.
Kurt was forever grateful that Blaine had transferred. Because he had, Kurt now had someone to talk to, someone to just laugh with and relax. So far his problems and crying fits hadn't pushed Blaine away and that in itself was what the most amazing part of it all was. If he had cried to anyone in glee, or Finn, they would have pat him on the back and tried to help sure, but they wouldn't have helped wipe away his tears or listened to the whole story. Blaine Anderson, you are my life saver. No matter how cheesy that may sound, it's true.
They reached the door and a comfortable silence settled between them as they still had time until class started. "Well, I know class doesn't start for a few minutes but I should probably get going." Blaine said. "Yeah. Meet me at my locker after class if you can." Kurt replied. "Sure thing. Hug before I go?" Blaine asked. Kurt just chuckled in response and took a step forward, being taken into Blaine's open arms.
Apparently their public display of friend-affection offended someone, because Blaine was pushed from behind, knocking both him and Kurt who was still in his grasp to the ground. Blaine tried to turn in the air so he didn't smash Kurt when they landed but didn't really succeed as they hit the floor, Kurt still mostly under his full weight. What just happened? "Ouch Blaine, what the heck? That hurt." Kurt asked confused. But Blaine was no longer on him and he heard as Blaine scrambled up yelling "Hey! What was that for?" This cannot be good.
"What was that, homo?" Asked an unfamiliar voice in the hallway. "I believe I asked my question first. What is your deal?" Blaine practically yelled angrily. Kurt stood shakily, extending a hand into the space before him, searching for Blaine's arm. "Blaine, it’s not a big deal. Just let it go." Kurt said urgently, still reaching and coming up with nothing but air. "No Kurt, I won't let it go. We did nothing wrong." Blaine said, farther away then Kurt had initially thought. He kept his arm out and took a few steps forward, towards Blaine's voice.
"You did nothing wrong, huh fairy? Last time I checked being a homo was something wrong." Said the same unfamiliar voice. "Oh, so that's the issue. Yeah, hate on the gays! What's so wrong with it huh?" Blaine replied. Kurt walked forward, farther still and then hesitated when his hand made purchase, because what he was grabbing was definitely not Blaine. "Don't be groping on me you fag!" Said the person as they shoved Kurt back hard, ripping their arm out of Kurt's searching hand. Kurt flew backwards and hit the ground with a loud smack and he gasped at the pain that sent a shock down his spine. "Kurt, are you okay?" Called Blaine's voice from overhead. "F-fine." Kurt said breathlessly as he turned to get up gingerly. "Seriously, this school has issues. How could you shove Kurt down like that? He's blind! He didn't even mean to grab onto you!" Blaine said. A hand clasped Kurt’s as he was standing and he held on tight for leverage. When he was on his feet, Blaine started walking him away. "Let's get outta here. I’m sure they have more important things to attend to."
Kurt's back was throbbing and he was humiliated. Why can't one day pass without incident? As they started their way down the hall, Kurt heard loud footsteps and then Blaine was wrenched from his grasp and there was the sickening thud and crunch of skin on skin contact. Blaine let out sharp cry of pain but then was in action, launching himself at his attacker. Kurt stood overwhelmed, not sure what was happening, but was sure that Blaine was hurt. There were noises of struggle and punching and Kurt couldn't just let Blaine be beat up like this! He jumped forward yelling "Don't hurt him!"
He grabbed hold of someone's jacket as an outcry of "Fight fight!" Was erupting from the watching students. He yanked hard on the jacket in his hand to separate the two boys and the body he was grabbing twisted in his grasp. They grabbed Kurt by the collar, lifting him off the floor and walked him back until he was shoved into the lockers with a resounding clang. One hand left his jacket and was then smashed into the right side of his face, making his left smack into the locker. Kurt let out a choked gasp and tried to pull out of his captors hands. He kicked his legs wildly and made contact with the bully's leg, but still wasn’t let go. He was scratching the back of the jock’s hand with his nails to get him to let go when his captor yelled in frustration. Kurt heard Blaine say “Take that” and then heard Blaine’s fist connect with some part of the guy holding him and he was suddenly dropped to the ground. He jumped up and turned to run but was tripped in the process so he went sprawling, ramming into someone. Kurt had barely uttered a sorry when the person he landed on pushed him off so he actually fell.
It seemed like all at once people were crowding around him to watch the fight between Blaine and the random jock and Kurt was being trampled by the growing mass of students. People were stepping on his hands and legs, not even paying attention to the yelps of pain emanating from him. “Stop, please, OUCH!” Kurt was trying to crawl his way out of the swarming hoard, getting kicked and stepped on when someone grabbed him by the shoulder, picking him up from the fray. Kurt almost cried in relief and grabbed hold of his savior for support while people pushed around him. Wait, Blaine’s still in the fight! “Wait, Blaine! Blaine’s hurt! Someone stop him please!” Kurt cried, stupidly trying to get back to the fight and tear Blaine away from the stupid jock. “Whoa, Kurt calm down! That’s what I’m here for. No one beats on kid’s ‘cept me.” Said a very familiar voice. “Puckerman?” Kurt asked.
“Yeah, now hold tight. Imma resolve this real quick.” And with that, Puck was gone, leaving Kurt to be pushed by his crazy classmates. Kurt pushed through the crowd horizontally, trying to make it to a wall. When he felt the cold metal of the lockers beneath his fingers he pushed himself tight against it and tried to avoid everyone else. “HEY, stop beatin on the new kid! Whoa, I said STOP!” Kurt heard Puck yell, and then there was the sound of an extremely hard punch and a thud on the ground. “That’s what I thought.” Puck said, and then the crowd went extremely quiet. I never though I would be glad for Puck’s violence. “You okay new kid?” Puck asked. “Fine, I’m fine.” Blaine said breathing heavily. Kurt was slowly inching his way along the lockers toward Blaine when a booming voice yelled “WHAT IN THE NAME OF TARNATION IS GOING ON HERE?” Principal Figgins. This is bad. Very bad.
Everyone stayed silent, except for Puckerman who nonchalantly said “Patricks over here was being a jerk and beating up the new kid for no reason, so I decided to put an end to things. Nothing to worry about.” Kurt moved inch by inch towards the yelling principal’s voice as he continued to chew Puck out. When Kurt moved into a pocket of space not completely crowded by people he knew he had made it out. But once he got there he didn’t know what he was supposed to do. I guess I’ll just wait until Figgin’s take’s Patricks to the principal’s office. But Blaine was fighting back, so what if they take him too? Oh no, he JUST transferred, what if… But Kurt’s train of thought was broken when he heard a whispered voice slightly in front of him say “Kurt?” Blaine! Kurt stood up straighter and whispered back “Yeah, are you okay?” “I’m Fine, but Kurt your face… I think he punched you in exactly the same spot. Are YOU okay? Blaine replied.
“Yes, I’m fine. But seriously, are you okay? That sounded terrible and then I was lost in the crowd and I was so worried!” Kurt said, hoping he didn’t sound as pathetic as he thought. “I have a few bruises, nothing I haven’t had before. Don’t worry about it. What we really need to worry about is me getting in trouble…already.” Blaine said with a humorless laugh. That’s true; he could get into some serious trouble with Figgin’s.
“Puckerman, Anderson, Patricks, my office. Now,” Said Figgins. A hand brushed against Kurt’s own and then he heard them walk away towards the principal’s office. “And the rest of you, go to class.”
As everyone walked towards their respective classes, Kurt stood for a moment waiting for the rush to pass and remember where exactly he was. I was on my way to first hour…so I’m still by my locker? But where is my bag? Kurt let out an exasperated sigh realizing his fate. He crouched down, on his feet, and began searching with his hands across the ground. This is going to take forever. He slowly moved down the hallway, finding nothing. He searched for what felt like was hours but was surely only minutes, coming up with nothing but dust and crumpled wrappers. His fruitless attempts at finding his bag were only making him angry, so he gave up and started walking towards his first hour.
When he arrived he slowly pushed open the door, and tried to hustle unnoticed to his seat. He was not so lucky. “Well, Mr. Hummel. Bonjour, ou avez-vous ete?” His French teacher asked him. “I-I can’t find my backpack. I lost it…in the fight.” Kurt mumbled embarrassed. “Well. Jackson, would you like to look for Kurt’s bag in the hall? It would be greatly appreciated I’m sure.” She said. “Thank you” Kurt said gratefully, taking his seat. “So, as I was saying…” and class continued. A few minutes Jackson returned with Kurt’s backpack.
When class was finally over, Kurt waited for the room to empty and then hurried to his locker hoping, even though he knew he wasn’t going to be there, to see Blaine. When he felt his punch code and no one approached him Kurt let out a disappointed sigh. Guess I’ll just wait until third hour.
His second hour was boring. Infinitely boring, terribly boring, horrendously, boringly boring. When it was over he practically got ran over in his haste to make it to third hour with the prospect of seeing if Blaine was in trouble. He sat down in his chair and pulled out his recorder. If Blaine’s not here I really won’t be able to do any work. The minutes were passing, and Kurt gave up hope. The teacher told them to get started on their paper’s, and Kurt just sat with nothing to do. He relaxed in his chair, deciding to nap, when someone walked in muttering a quiet apology. Kurt didn’t take much notice until he heard the loud thump that was Blaine sitting down in his chair.
“Blaine?” Kurt asked. “Yeah, it’s good news. Puckerman covered for me, saying it was his entire fault, told me he didn’t mind a detention or two.” Blaine said relieved.
“That’s great; I was worried you would get in trouble and with you being new, that could have been really bad.” Kurt replied, equally relieved. “So, project time! Where did we leave off?”
The rest of the hour was spend with Blaine reading the passage aloud, jotting down notes every once and a while, and Kurt recording. When the bell rang, Blaine hung back with Kurt and they took off down the hall. Blaine started rubbing patterns into the back of the hand he was holding, as they held hands every passing period to not get lost…Or maybe something more? Blaine thought in the back of his mind.
“You still on for coffee? I know I am.” Blaine asked. “Why would I ever say no to coffee? Of course.” Said Kurt. At Kurt’s fourth hour door Blaine hesitated, wanted to hug the other boy but seeing the school’s reaction earlier made him wary. Choosing to be discreet, He leaned in towards Kurt’s ear and whispered “See you last hour” and walked away.
Kurt was frozen. He was completely not expecting Blaine to be so close, and he was MOST definitely not expecting the warm breathe that misted over his ear, giving him goose bumps. He stood breathing shakily for a moment, then collected himself and went on to his class.

They walked hand in hand towards the coffee shop, each silent. Walking up to the counter, Blaine ordered. “I’ll have a medium drip and uh….uhm… What do you want?”
“I’ll have a Grande non-fat mocha.” Kurt supplied. They walked to their table, Blaine ever the gentlemen held out Kurt’s chair for him.
“So, how were classes?” Blaine started. “Oh, the usual. Being bored to death by the lack of actual education. Wishing I was…anywhere else.” Kurt had almost said with YOU and held back at the last second. “Same,” Blaine said, not catching on to Kurt’s almost slip up. “Class is relatively boring. Almost makes me glad for the fight.” Blaine laughed.
“Don’t say that! You could have been really hurt! Speaking of which…is your face okay? You said you had bruises.” Kurt asked worried.
“Yeah, we almost match. But mines just ugly, it’s really unfair. On you, it looks almost cute, but then again, everything…you do…is cute.” Blaine trailed off blushing. Kurt couldn’t help the blush that also spread across his own cheeks. “Can I…feel it?” Kurt asked. “Sure,” Blaine said, leaning forward across the table.
Blaine’s cheek was smooth he must have shaved and there were no cuts. Kurt cupped his cheek with his hand, and then felt the other. Both seemed to be in perfect condition until Kurt brushed over a sore spot and Blaine hissed. “Sorry” Kurt muttered. “Your fine, it didn’t really hurt that much.” Blaine said, just as quietly. Blaine leaned his hand into the warm touch, relishing the contact. Kurt was enjoying it just as much when he remembered they were in a coffee shop and should probably be listening for the drinks. He slowly retracted his hand and sat it in his lap, blushing harder than ever.
When their coffee was called, Blaine got up to retrieve it and when he returned sat Kurt’s cup down in front of him. “How much homework do you have? I really don’t want to work on Charlemagne when I have so much Algebra 2.” Blaine asked jokingly. “That’s fine; I have nothing else so… I can just help you?” Kurt replied.
They worked for an hour and a half, studying but breaking the tense mood with laughter and playful banter. “Oh my gosh, its 4:30. I have to get home! Is that okay with you?” Kurt asked anxiously, gathering his recorder and misplaced pencils. “Of course, just let me clean up.” Kurt stood tapping his foot, worried that his Father would be mad at him for being so late.
Blaine grabbed Kurt’s hand and carefully pulled him to his car. They strapped in and were off, probably speeding but they didn’t care, with the windows down. Kurt tried for a few unsuccessful minutes to tame his blowing hair but finally caved in and let it fly back from his face. Blaine laughed at Kurt’s obvious discomfort, and put a reassuring hand over Kurt’s own. “Don’t worry about your hair; it’s just me you know.” Blaine said.
Kurt sighed. “Yes, I know. But I never let anyone, well except Finn; see me with my hair messed up. This is a very rare occasion, so don’t get used to it.” Kurt grumbled. The car slowly sped down as they reached residential neighborhoods, and pulled to a complete stop in Kurt’s drive way. “Home sweet home” Blaine said, getting out of the driver’s seat to help Kurt out of his own.
They walked up to the door, stopping when they reached the porch steps. “So, I’ll see you tomorrow. I’ll pick you up again, k?” Blaine said. “Sounds like a plan.” Kurt said somewhat awkwardly, as he was at a loss of what else to say. “Well, I should…” Kurt began, but stopped when Blaine pulled him closer by both of his hands, then pressed a gentle kiss to his bruised cheek.
Kurt’s breathe hitched in his throat, and his mouth opened slightly. “Bye, Kurt.” Blaine said in a hushed tone, and then walked back to his car. Kurt stood standing there at his door, frozen, until the sound of Blaine’s car was long gone and his dad probably thought he had been kidnapped or something. But he really didn’t care. Blaine just kissed my cheek
