Blaine tried to catch up with his breathing while he contemplated on his next move. Kurt was going to kill him. Scratch that. He would kill him slowly by giving him the coldest shoulders in the history of cold shoulders. How could he be so careless? But still it wasn’t entirely his fault that the baby kept him up until 5 in the morning. Right, he could use that to aim for Kurt’s forgiveness. But the tired excuse is still not strong enough, Blaine could tell. He thought of what he could do to mitigate the punishment that he’s in as he rode the elevator down to the lobby.
“Kurt’s going to kill me.” Blaine muttered to himself.
“How about you? I don’t suppose you have any idea for me, do you?” Blaine asked the baby. The baby just smiled at him. How can he explain to Kurt that the baby’s staying for one more night? Blaine understands why Kurt would oppose to keeping the baby. One: he’s too young to be stressed by a baby and therefore too young for wrinkles. Two: He can’t stand unnecessary noise for long periods of time. Three: He’s a little bit of a neat freak. The baby is just a ticking mess bomb waiting to happen. Even though it’s just one night, Blaine had to step up his game to prevent his apartment from turning into winter wonder hell.
___________
“Come on, pick up.” Kurt waited as he tapped his foot in annoyance. His day did not go well at all. They got a substitute in class who ridiculed half of his sketches. He got a douche bag for a partner in an activity, spilled coffee all over his favorite coat and finally, lost his keys somewhere along the way. Now he’s locked out and grumpy.
“Hello?”
“Yes, hi. Nice of you to pick up your phone. Can you please open the door? I don’t have my keys.”
“Where are they?”
“BLAINE! Can you please just open the door?!”
Blaine was taken aback by his boyfriend’s tone. Obviously, Kurt’s not on the sunny side of things at the moment. Great. This just makes it more difficult for him to break the news to him. When he opened the door, Kurt’s infamous bitch stare welcomed him.
“Good evening to you too, gorgeous.” Blaine countered hoping it would change Kurt’s mood. But it didn’t. Kurt’s stare just dug deeper into him. Blaine kissed his cheek to ease the tension.
“Life just sucks at the - -“ Kurt started but before he could finish, he was cut off by Blaine covering his eyes with his hands.
“Blaine? What the hell are you doing?” Kurt’s voice was starting to raise again.
“Shh. Relax, babe. Let me take care of you. It looks like you could use a break.”
“If this is another impromptu visit from the monkey wearing a tux, I am not interested. It wasn’t even funny the first time!” Kurt was still irritated but Blaine has his weapon to calm him down; before pissing him off again. Blaine led Kurt to the dining room and took his hands off his eyes. He had set a romantic candlelit dinner for the two of them to soften Kurt up.
“Wow, Blaine. This is amazing.” Kurt said finally relaxing. He just realized that he has been a big jerk to his boyfriend ever since he got home. His boyfriend who must’ve slaved over for hours cooking . . who was he kidding? Blaine could not cook to save his life. He must’ve ordered in advance at some restaurant and threw the take out bags before he got home. But who cares? It’s the thought that counts.
“I’m so sorry. This day just pissed me off. I didn’t mean to yell at you.” Kurt put his arms around Blaine’s neck and hugged him.
“It’s okay. I have my days too.” Blaine said as he put his arms around Kurt’s waist. They stared at each other for a while until Kurt broke the silence.
“I don’t think I’m hungry for that though.” Kurt said pointing at their meal.
“What? I could run down to get you your favorite salad at Cielo’s if you want.” Blaine panicked a little. He was determined to keep Kurt in a good mood for as long as he could. Remember the last time, Anderson. -- He said to himself.
“No, I think I want something more sweet and sexy.” Kurt winked.
“Sexy?” Blaine was confused. Kurt loved his boyfriend but he can be slow at times. He decided to wipe away Blaine’s confusion with a kiss. As soon as his lips touched Blaine’s, he made to move them both to the nearest door. Blaine soon realized where they were going and quickly shifted to another direction.
“Don’t you think it would be better if we continue this in our room?” Blaine asked hoping Kurt would change his mind.
“Why? What’s wrong with the guest room?” Kurt asked as he raised an eyebrow.
“I don’t like the bed there?” Blaine said with uncertainty praying it would be good enough for an excuse.
“Well that’s not true. I caught you and Mike jumping on the bed a few times last month. How can you not like it? I’m sorry honey but you’re ruining the moment.” Kurt reattached his lips to Blaine’s and moved towards the door. He was about to reach for the knob when Blaine grabbed his hand.
“What is the matter with you, Blaine?”
“Nothing.” Blaine didn’t have a good excuse. His mind is too occupied on thinking about the damage control that he’ll have to do after this.
“Blaine Anderson. What the hell is going on?” Kurt grabbed the doorknob before Blaine could stop him.
“Kurt, no!”
“Why are you being so –“ Kurt was cut off by what he saw. It was their guest room with the same wallpaper and same carpet only it was transformed into what looked like a baby room with the little knick knacks all over. There she was, the baby lying in the middle of the bed with pillows on her sides to keep her from falling off the bed.
“No, Blaine. You didn’t.” Kurt started.
“It’s not what you think.” Blaine said in defense. There goes his plan of prolonging the peace.
“You were supposed to give the baby to Child Services. What happened?” Kurt’s voice was starting to raise again.
“I didn’t wake up on time. We were late. The office was already closed when we got there.” Blaine explained. “If it wasn’t for Sadie, I don’t think I would even have the chance to rush to make it on time.”
“Sadie? You named the baby? See. This is why I don’t want that baby around. You get attached to things way too easily. We cannot keep a baby, Blaine. Are you out of your mind?” Kurt’s eyes was already getting bigger and bigger bordering on “I’m-judging-you” and “You’re-not-sleeping-in-our-bed-tonight”.
“I didn’t name her. It was written in her diaper bag. Besides, I’m not saying that we’re keeping her. We just have to keep her until tomorrow. The office opens up on Monday. We could drop the baby by then and be back to our normal lives once again.” Blaine explained. It seems like a legit plan. The goal was to keep on talking until Kurt was convinced that his actions were not worthy of punishment.
“But this is not a pet, Blaine. It’s a human person. We’re responsible for it. You don’t know anything about taking care of a baby. The little knowledge you have, you got on YouTube. What if something happens to her between now and Monday, huh? We can’t just run to the store and buy a replacement baby. I don’t want to be the half of the couple who ruined a baby’s life. It goes down in records and I don’t think it would be a nice note in our application form if ever we decide to adopt one of our own someday.”
Bingo. Blaine found his loophole.
“So you want to adopt someday?” Blaine attempted to change the topic. Fingers crossed, he might just make it out of this alive.
“Yes, I have thought about it. What does that have to do with the baby? If this is your way of saying we should keep the baby, you should just stop right here. I don’t want to hear it.” Kurt raised his finger at Blaine. Blaine grabbed his finger and held Kurt’s hand and took it full in his.
“I’m not saying we should keep her. I’m just saying that this could be an opportunity for, I don’t know, practice maybe? If you’re thinking about adopting, you’ll have to get used to taking care of a baby.” Blaine spoke using his most convincing voice. Kurt knows that tone too well. He was ready to counter it at all costs.
“I know, but not now. It’s way too early for your “practice”, Blaine.”
“But it couldn’t hurt, could it? It’s not like we could drop her anywhere else. Do you know anyone who’s willing to take in a baby at this time of the night? I don’t think so.”
Kurt knows Blaine had a point. As much as he wanted to be rid of the baby, he doesn’t have much of an option. They’ll just have to be extra careful. He’s not about to be the gay baby killer.
“Fine.” Kurt conceded. He watched as Blaine’s face lit up right before he moved closer to hug him. It’s not like they’re keeping the baby. It was only until Monday. He and Blaine could just figure out how not to endanger the baby for the next 34 hours and they’ll be alright. Kurt hopes his rationalization in his head would stick through.
“On one condition though.” Kurt added. “I’m not dealing with any diapers.”
“How about a 50:50 split?”
“Blaine. That wasn’t an invitation for a bargain.”
“Okay. Deal.”
As if on cue, the smell of a full diaper filled the room. “It’s your time to shine, Anderson.” Kurt laughed as he tore away from the hug. Kurt stepped closer to Sadie and pinched her cheek. “Good job, girl.”
“Now if you don’t mind” Kurt stepped heading for the door. “I have a dinner to enjoy. Have fun, Blaine!” Kurt said giving one last wink before closing the door. Blaine was right. This baby is the princess of impeccable timing.
