Summer faded away in a hazy heat wave. Kurt was so busy with work, he barely noticed it. All he caught of summer was the blazing sun glistening through the building windows and the short bursts of vitamin D on his daily commutes. He usually came home a little sweaty and he liked to think, a little tan.
Sliding back the large door, was a daily adventure all on its own. Some days, Kurt would find two artists at work on a masterpiece, or the top chefs, maybe it was cops and robbers another day or the stars of their own show. The two man band was a common one, along with pirates and deep sea divers. Sometimes, behind the door would be an empty apartment and note that they were at Blaine's place and would be back soon. Then they'd open the door to reveal their wall paint covered hands and smocks with matching yellow hard hats, even though all they moved were boxes and paint buckets. Everytime Kurt got extra time to himself, Toronto helped Blaine make his new home look a little less new. And Kurt's favorite thing to find behind the door was Blaine sprawled out on the couch softly snoring, with Toronto curled up on his chest also fast asleep, while cartoons on the tv entertained the teddy bear on the floor. But all the adventures came to an end when school started.
An eager Toronto tugged Kurt by the hand down the colorful hallway. It was their first time walking to Toronto's kindergarten class, the first of many times this year. The bright eyed boy yanked on his dad's hand, enthusiastically.
"Daddy! Daddy, this is my room!" He jabbed his finger at an orange star on the door with his name. Inside was more colored stars and crayons and paper and blocks. The room was full of other kids, some hugging to their parents, others playing with the exuberance of toys. Leaning against a wooden desk and talking to the parents was a lean lady with long hair pulled up into a loose bun. Her bright blue eyes watched over the playing children, like they were little ducklings waddling around the room. Kurt knew her as Anali, but the nameplate on her desk said Mrs. Dutton.
Kurt knelt beside his son and whispered, "there's your teacher. Should we go say hi?" Toronto nodded nervously. "Come on." He led his son over.
Once they were in her eyesight, Anali sprung to life. "Kurt!" She hurried to him for a hug. "How are you?"
"I'm good, and you?"
"Great! I didn't know you had a son!" Anali proclaimed, looking to the small boy peeking behind his father's leg.
"Oh yeah, he's.." Kurt knelt down in front of his son, "do you want to introduce yourself?" Toronto shook his head. "His name is Toronto." Kurt informed her.
"Toronto? Well, Toronto, you can call Mrs. Dutton." She told him happily.
"What do you say?" Kurt prompted.
"Hi." The boy said softly, then hid his face behind his dad again.
"He's being shy today." Kurt spoke up, almost apologetically.
"That's quite alright." Anali told him. Then to Toronto she said, "We are going to have so much fun today, I promise."
"See, Toronto? She promises you'll have fun, okay? But, I have to go to work now. So, I'll see you later, okay?" Kurt checked, hugging his son. After many protests on Toronto's part, they eventually calmed him down enough for Kurt to go to work.
In between meetings, Kurt found Percy in the break room getting coffee. They treated it like a coincidence, even though they meet then and there almost daily. It was their unspoken agenda.
"Um, Percy?" Kurt spoke.
The older man pulled his gaze from the coffee mug and smiled at Kurt. "Hi Kurt."
"Can we talk?"
"Sure." Percy stood, bringing his mug with him and followed Kurt to his office. "Am I in trouble?" He was teasing, Kurt knew, but he still had to explain.
"No. At least not with me, I don't think."
"What do you mean by that?"
Kurt didn't answer the question simply. Instead, he took it as an invitation to elaborate. "I didn't know Anali was a teacher."
"Yes, kindergarten. How do you know that?" Percy crinkled his forehead, looking to Kurt with great suspicion.
"She's my son's teacher." Kurt told him.
"Oh...that's...oh."
"Yeah, oh." Kurt snapped.
"Hey, it's okay." Percy pulled him into a hug, rubbing circles into his back. "We can make it work. It's not like there's a parent-teacher situation that involves you, her, me and Toronto. It'll work out I promise."
"Okay, but now what'll happen when you tell her? Wouldn't that make things weird for Toronto in class?"
"I can wait to tell her."
"Percy, you've been waiting for awhile now. And I'm not trying to push you to come out, but I don't know how long I can keep up with the sneaking around and lying. I feel bad."
"Don't, baby, it will all work out in the end. I promise." Kurt nodded, only a little reassured. "Do you wanna do something tonight?"
"I can't." Kurt said. "Toronto's first day of school was today and he'll be pretty excited. I don't wanna miss that."
"Of course, I understand."
And Toronto was very excited. As soon as Kurt walked into the happy room, Toronto ran up to him, jumping in his arms.
"Hi, sweetie! How was your first day?" He asked.
"It was so much fun daddy! I we colored and had snack time and played outside and I made new friends!" The little boy gushed.
Anali came over to sign Toronto out for the day.
"How was he?" Kurt checked.
"Once he calmed down, he was great. Very friendly." She reassured Kurt."
"Great, thank you. He seems very thrilled, so we'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yes, bye Kurt."
"Bye, Anali. Say bye, Toronto."
"Bye!" The little boy called over his dad's shoulder, waving his tiny hand.
