Chapter 11

On Monday, Kurt had a late start for work. It gave him just enough time to take Toronto to school in the morning. When they got there, Anali was standing by the door to greet all of her students. Kurt assumed this was a daily thing for her. As soon as she saw the Hummel boys approaching, she smiled and waved at Toronto.

"Hey! Are you ready for another awesome day?" She asked him.

"Yeah!" Toronto enthusiastically replied, hurrying into the classroom, stopping to wave at his dad.

Kurt watched his son playing with his friends. Rarely did it occur to Kurt that Toronto would grow up someday. But, moments like these remind him that he isn't a baby anymore. "He doesn't cry and cling to me leg anymore." He thought aloud, reminiscing on his son's preschool days.

Anali laughed, "yeah, he probably wouldn't do that again until college." Kurt groaned, but he was smiling. College. He wanted to expel that word from Toronto's vocabulary, along with the word 'moving out'. "Or the first time you make him drive on the freeway alone."

"No, oh no. He is not driving. I don't want that to happen." Anali laughed again. Kurt wondered if she'd been through this. Percy never mentioned kids, but then again he never mentions much. Their personal conversations are rare and rather one sided.

"We should all have dinner together sometime. You, me, and Percy. Toronto could even come if you'd like." She smiled up at Kurt and she looked so excited about the idea. Kurt did his darnedest to not look mortified by the idea.

"Yes!" He replied almost to psychotically. "That would be great! I'd love to do that!"

"How about we aim for Friday night, Percy and I's house at seven-ish? I'll cook!"

"Totally! I can, uh, check my availability then and get back to you. I have to go to work, now though. So, have a good day."

"Bye, Kurt." Anali said, as he awkwardly blended into the crowd of children and parents.

As soon as he got to work, he found Percy. "We have a huge problem."

Percy glanced at Kurt's sinfully tight orange pants. "Kurt, it's not even noon yet." He tsked in a low voice so only they could hear.

"No, I don't mean a that kind of problem." Kurt loosely gestured to his crotch. "I mean like you, me, your wife and my son all sitting down for the biggest train wreck of a dinner to ever happen on a Friday night." Percy's lips formed a silent "oh." Kurt nodded, finally having gotten through to him. "That kind of problem!"

"How did this happen?" Percy asked. He was leaning back in his chair—far nicer than any on Kurt's floor— with his hands tucked behind his head.

Kurt sucked in his bottom lip, worrying it between his teeth. "I don't know." He finally said. "When I dropped Toronto off at school she just looked so excited about the idea and she was so sweet. I'm sorry."

Percy laughed. He sat upright and extended his open palm across his desk. Kurt placed his own hand on it, their fingers intertwining. "Kurt, I'm not mad at you for being nice to my wife." He sighed, giving Kurt's hand a squeeze. "I just know we can't have this dinner." Kurt nodded quickly, looking up at Percy with his big bright eyes. "I'll figure something out, okay?" Again Kurt nodded, before returning back to work.

When Kurt picked Toronto up from Blaine's house, he was desperate to find a way in which he wouldn't have to see Anali tomorrow. Blaine had barley gotten his front door open and a two word greeting out, before Kurt cut him off.

"Hey. You're able to drop off Toronto tomorrow morning, right?" He blurted.

"That's what we planned, isn't it?" Blaine answered, feeling rather frazzled from the ambush. Kurt nodded frantically. "Alright," Blaine chuckled. "Well, uh, the little one crashed on the couch in there."

"Sorry, I'll get him home. I know I'm kinda late." Kurt apologized, stepping past Blaine. But, the smaller boy stopped him from continuing to his living room with a hand on his shoulder.

"I wanted to ask you something first." Kurt looked expectantly at him. "I was thinking we should get dinner together or something sometime."

How many more dinner dates can be planned today? Kurt wondered. "Umh, sure. That could be fun." Surely Blaine meant it in a platonic way. He knows they're just friends. He's got to know.

"Great, are you free Friday? We can go to that world famous restaurant in ChinaTown." Blaine offered, throwing Kurt a little wink.

Kurt couldn't be more thankful for a way out of the dinner. Would Percy like it? Probably not; but excuses is what they both need and luckily Blaine is providing. "Friday is perfect."

At work the next day, Kurt again found Percy. The news he now carried held more hope than his previous message. "I have an excuse!" He announced, closing the door of Percy's office.

The older man looked up from his work. "Excellent, so do I. I told Anali we have to work late that night, then I made reservations for us to get dinner together."

"Oh," Kurt didn't know how to break it to him that he had plans. Besides, it was so rare for Percy to ever arrange for the two of them to go out places. "Alright. Where are the reservations for?"

"Ah, that's a suprise." Percy said, throwing Kurt a wink. Kurt couldn't help smiling as he left for his own office.

Sitting down in his desk, Kurt retrieved his phone and typed up a message.

Kurt: hey B, might have to take a raincheck on Friday

It took roughly ten minutes for the response to come.

Blaine: just checked. Looks like clear skies ;)

Kurt: haha, how does Wednesday sound? Santana will b back early, I can cook

Blaine: family dinner? Count me in!

Kurt bit his lip, hesitating over the text. A family dinner. That's what it could've been. But they're not a family. Blaine chose to expel that title years ago. In no way was that Kurt's choice and it's return made him a little giddy.

Kurt: (:
