Blaine was at the front of Kurt's neighborhood when a big drop of water landed on the windshield, rain.
"Fan-freakin'-tastic." He said to himself.
The farther he drove, the rain that had been very heavy near Kurt's house, thinned out, but the ground was still very wet and slick. It had clearly already rained in this area. He tried to keep his mind off of the call with his dad by listening to the radio, but not even Katy Perry could cheer him up now. He stopped the car at a red light and automatically reached for his phone. He was upset, he wanted to call Kurt. But, he couldn't, he knew his dad would check his phone for calls or texts that Blaine had made after their conversation. If his father found out that he had called anyone, especially Kurt, while he was grounded, the situation would only get worse.
All he could do was sit and let his fathers words run through his head.
'That Kurt' 'you're fags! That's the difference!' 'Only girls and queers cry at that!' 'Why do you have to be such a fag, Blaine?'
As the light turned green and Blaine continued driving, Mr. Anderson's words continued swimming through his mind. As Blaine passed the Lima Bean, a big van came speeding out of the parking lot. Blaine slammed on his brakes, but he hadn't stopped soon enough. Are you happy now, Blaine? His dad's voice echoed.
The van slammed into the front of Blaine's car, knocking out his headlights and killing his engine. Somehow the van remained unharmed and swiveled around Blaine's car, disappearing down the dark road. Why do you have to be such a fag, Blaine? He heard his father's question for the third time that night.
Blaine was about to get out of his car and try calling for help, but he didn't get farther than unbuckling his seat belt, when a big delivery truck came screeching down the road. The driver had just slammed on his breaks, clearly just noticing Blaine's navy blue car in the dark night. Much like Blaine, the driver wasn't able to stop in time and began honking at Blaine to move, which he couldn't. He rammed into Blaine's passenger seat door, smashing the door in, shattering the window and tipping Blaine's tiny car onto its side. The loud bang of the car tipping and the sounds of broken glass filled Blaine's ears, but the last thing he heard was his father's voice in his head,
God, why can't you be a normal boy for once?
Then he blacked out.
Kurt tucked his long legs under him and settled in on the couch. He was reading a Vogue magazine with his phone on the coffee table, waiting for Blaine's call, and the news quietly streaming on the TV, the weather lady being the only person to keep Kurt company in the empty house.
Kurt was reading an article about blazers, which reminded him of Blaine, when the TV screaming "BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!" at him caught his attention. On the screen was a woman in a suit standing in front of the Lima Bean on the intersection of Elm Street and Bellefontaine Avenue. Now Kurt was intrigued.
"I'm currently standing on the site of, what officers assume to be, a hit and run accident. We don't have all of the details yet, but we hopefully will soon." The reporter announced. "The crash involved a small navy prius, a delivery truck and another unidentified vehicle. An eyewitness and also the driver of the delivery truck has more details." Kurt thought of Blaine's car, but quickly hushed the thought, Blaine's home he just couldn't call because of his dad.
The camera cut to a husky man with ginger hair and beard. The caption at the bottom of the screen read-
Doug O'Henry, Eye Witness and Walmart Truck Driver
"Well, um... I'm driving the down Elm Street making a delivery to Walmart, when I see a white van speeding past, turning off of Bellefontaine." Doug spoke with a very thick Boston accent. "Then when I turn the corner onto Bellefontaine, I'm just driving and it's dark, ya know. But I'm going, and at first I think I see something, ya know, but I just keep going, 'cause I gotta get my deliveries done.
"But, the closer I get, I start to realize that it's a car just sitting with its lights off in the middle of the intersection. And, ya know, the grounds all wet from the rain, so I'm slamming on my breaks and I'm honking, but I can't stop, I'm just skidding and slipping. And, yeah, and that other car isn't movin'. So I think, I'll swerve, but I swerve, I tip. I can't lose all of the merch in my truck, ya know. Then, bang!" He clapped his hands together for emphasis, "I slam right into the car. My truck is pretty okay, but the tiny prius, it's screwed."
It cut back to the lady in front of the coffee shop, "Doug had called the ambulance and when they reached the site the driver of the car, Blaine Anderson, was unconscious and still remains that way. Doctors say that-"
Kurt didn't hear anything after that, his mind was spinning, Blaine was in the hospital, unconscious. Kurt had to go, but which hospital?
"Mr. and Mrs. Anderson preferred to not do an interview and requested that, since Blaine is a minor, he isn't shown on TV." She continued, "But he is being treated in the Emergency center of Saint Rita's Medical Hospital."
She may or may not have continued speaking after that, Kurt didn't know or care. With all of the information he needed, he had clicked off the TV and grabbed his keys. He had to see Blaine.
He ran into the hospital and after pressing the elevator button multiple times, he gave up and sprinted up the stairs to the Emergency Center floor. He busted through the door and immediately ran into a man pacing back and forth.
"Sorry." the man replied. Kurt recognized the Boston accent.
"Where's Blaine!?" He shouted at Doug, assuming the man would know where his boyfriend was.
"Oh, geez. Umm, room, umm 322?" He said the sentence more of a question than a statement. He sounded nervous. "But, only family can see him now, who are you?"
"Kurt Hummel, I'm his boyfriend." Kurt answered, without thinking. The man squinted his eyes at Kurt and looked him up and down. He caught Kurt's eyes and stared into them. Kurt shrank under his gaze and wanted to look away. He was scared of the man and felt like he was learning everything about Kurt just from looking in his eyes, Kurt didn't like that. But, the man's stone face slowly cracked and his mouth began to swoop into a smile.
"I'll try to get you in." Doug replied. He turned and gestured for Kurt to follow.
He led Kurt down the hall to where a Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were having a conversation with the doctor.
Doug walked up and waited for them to finish talking, before requesting that Kurt be let in to see Blaine.
"Absolutely not." Mr. Anderson replied, without a second of hesitation. "It's family only, right Dr. Fisher?"
"Yes, Kurt can't visit Blaine until tomorrow, unless he has family consent or the patient's request." The man, whom Kurt assumed was Dr. Fisher, replied.
"Well, I'm sure if Blaine were conscious he would want to see Kurt. You can see it in his face, these boys are in love." Doug argued. Mr. Anderson grunted in disgust and made a face like he smelled something foul.
"That may be, but until Blaine wakes up and asks for Kurt or his parents let Kurt in, there is nothing I can do. It's the hospital policy." Dr. Fisher said.
"No, you're gonna do something!" Doug began raising his voice. He reminded Kurt of his dad.
Not wanting to get dragged into the argument, Kurt turned to Mrs. Anderson.
"How's Blaine?" He asked, nervously.
"He has a broken left arm and a few bruises and cuts, some requiring stitches." She said, not sugar coating it at all. Kurt put his shaky hand up to his mouth.
"Where is he?" Kurt asked, in a whisper. She gestured to the door behind her. It was open a crack and through it, Kurt could just barely see Blaine. He was lying on the hospital bed looking so helpless. His face was covered in cuts and bruises and his mouth was partly open, with stitches on his bottom lip. Kurt almost passed over Blaine's eyes, assuming they would just be his eyelids over his sleeping eyes. But, when hazel caught blue, Kurt almost stopped breathing.
"Blaine!" He squealed, pushing past Doug, Dr. Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. He darted across the room, narrowly missing Mr. Anderson's reach for his shirt, and over to Blaine's bedside.
"Blaine, honey, you're awake." He said, taking Blaine's uninjured hand in his. He nodded and stared at Kurt, wide eyed. "How are you feeling?"
"It hurts." Blaine whined, he actually whined. He sounded like a little boy crying to his mom. Kurt let it slide, because Blaine did have his childish moments, very many childish moments.
"Where does it hurt, honey?" Kurt asked, unintentionally speaking in a patronizing tone as if he was talking to a little toddler.
"Everywhere, mostly my arm and my head, holy crap my head!"
"Oh, I'm so sorry honey." Kurt leaned down and gave Blaine a small peck on his forehead, careful to avoid cuts and bruised spots. When Kurt came up from the kiss and looked at Blaine, he looked extremely confused and uncomfortable.
"Who are you?" Blaine asked.
"Wh- what?" Kurt glanced over to the doorway where Doug and Mrs. Anderson were holding back Mr. Anderson and the doctor. "What do you mean? I'm Kurt, your boyfriend. Don't you remember me?" Kurt tried to hold back the hurt in his voice.
"Boyfriend?" Blaine asked as if it were the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard. "Why would I have a boyfriend?"
"Blaine? Come on, honey." Kurt urged.
"I'm sorry, dude." Did Blaine just call him 'dude'? He sounded like Finn. "I think you have the wrong room or something and stop calling me 'honey', it's weird." Kurt was stunned. Did Blaine seriously not remember him?
"Blaine, are you serious?" Kurt asked, this time he wasn't able to hold back any of his hurt.
"Yeah." Blaine said, snatching his hand out of Kurt's grasp, then wincing at the pain.
"Careful sweety, don't move." Kurt replied upon reflex, taking Blaine's hand back into his.
"Dad!?" Blaine called, shooting a worried glance towards his father. Mr. Anderson pushed, more of stepped past, his wife and Doug, who had dropped their barricade from confusion, shock and disbelief. Mr. Anderson grabbed Kurt by the arm and dragged him out of the room.
"I think it's time for you to go." He said. "And don't come back." he added once they were out of earshot of the others. Mr. Anderson let go of Kurt, then turned and headed back to his son.
Kurt bolted out of the hospital, he couldn't stay. The tears began pooling in his eyes and his head was spinning. With blurred vision and a broken heart, he found his way to the stairs and out the main entrance of the hospital in probably record time.
