Kurt had gone on the date. Partially because he really did like Blaine, but mostly because Rachel wasn’t going to let him not go. Dinner consisted of a quaint little caf on some side alley in Manhattan; casual, but classy. Afterwards Blaine dragged him dancing and, as much as he really hated to admit it, Kurt had kind of an awesome time.
When Blaine dropped Kurt off at his apartment at 3am he did so with a soft kiss and a whispered “Goodnight,” before walking off.
Rachel, who (of course) waited up, demanded such an in-depth play-by-play of the date that it wasn’t until almost 7 Kurt fell into bed.
When he woke later that day there was a text message waiting for him. ”Had a great time last night. Already have date #2 planned, but it’s gonna take me some time. What are you doing day after tomorrow?”
“So, are you going to tell me where we’re going, or am I going to have to kill you?”
Blaine, upon picking Kurt up, had securely tied a blindfold around his eyes and refused to move until he was convinced that Kurt could not see a single thing. Kurt could only imagine the looks they were getting as they walked through what sounded like midtown Manhattan. He could also imagine the goddamn smirk on Blaine’s face as he guided Kurt by the arm to their mysterious destination.
“If I told you where we were going then this would be no fun,” Blaine replied, “but we’re almost there.”They continued walking for a few more minutes before Blaine guided Kurt into a building. Kurt felt the cool blast of the air conditioning and the muted sounds of the lobby of a building. They stood, then moved, then stood some more and then the floor was moving.
“You could have warned me about the elevator,” Kurt scolded, stumbling slightly as they lurched upwards.
“Oops,” Blaine chuckled. Kurt tried to glare. Blaine laughed harder.
When the elevator stopped, Blaine guided Kurt forward, through another door, and once more outside. He stopped Kurt, turned him slightly, then removed the blindfold.
They were on the roof of a building, looking out over most of downtown. Before them sat a picnic blanket, a few pillows, and dozens of bottles of wine, each one different than the next. Kurt walked towards the blanket and began examining the various bottles; merlot, pinot noir, ros, chardonnay. There were more types of wine than Kurt even knew existed.
“We,” Blaine said, coming up next to Kurt, “are going to have a wine tasting. And we’re not going to stop tasting these wines until you decide which one you like the best.”
“That could take a while.”
“That’s the plan.” Blaine sat, extending a hand to Kurt who took it eagerly, sitting next to Blaine and picking up the nearest bottle. Blaine pulled out a bag of plastic wine glasses, ignoring the momentary grimace from Kurt, and began opening and pouring various wines.
“So why a rooftop?” Kurt asked, sipping his third or fourth taste of wine. At the rate they were going Kurt would be very, very drunk in a little while.
“Two birds with one stone.” Kurt gave him a questioning look as he finished off the glass and reached for the next. “You’ll see.”
One by one they tasted the wines, narrowing down Kurt’s preferences one by one until they were left with only a select few choices. Some bottles sat nearly full, barely a sip taken before it was cast aside as a solid “no.” Other bottles were emptied, either because they enjoyed the taste or because they’d been indecisive to the point of needing to finish the bottle in order to decide.
As they continued to drink Kurt began feeling that tell-tale warmth that meant he was steadily becoming drunk. The more he drank, the less he could hide what he was feeling.
“Why are you doing this? How are you doing all this?” he finally asked, putting down another empty bottle. Blaine smiled and shifted so Kurt was leaning against him, watching the horizon.
“Why shouldn’t I do it?”
“Stop being perfect. It really isn’t fair,” Kurt groaned before he could stop himself.
“Perfect, huh?” Blaine asked, taking the wine glass from Kurt. “I think you’ve had enough for now. Why don’t we eat something? There are sandwiches in the basket over here.”
“Okay.” Kurt was an easy drunk. Blaine laughed.
“Maybe I should just keep you drunk, it’s much easier to get you to agree to things.”
“Are you trying to take advantage of me?” Kurt slurred, pushing himself off of Blaine.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Blaine held out a sandwich and grinned at Kurt, “now eat.”
“Okay,” Kurt said, taking the sandwich and downing it in three bites. “Now what?” he asked, looking around them.
“Ssshh, come back here,” Blaine said, leaning against the wall behind him and pulling Kurt against him, in turn.
“What are we doing?”
“Well, we just crossed one of the things off of your list,” Blaine started.
“No we didn’t, I didn’t decide which wine I liked best!” Kurt protested.
“Okay. Well then; Kurt, which wine did you like best?” Blaine watched as Kurt looked around at the bottles surrounding them.
“This one,” he said, holding up one of the empty bottles. “Definitely this one.”
“There ya go, now we’ve crossed off one of your list items. Now get back here because I’m trying to help you with another one.”
Kurt shrugged and snuggled into Blaine’s shoulder.
