The two boys were sitting in the choir room with the rest of the glee club awaiting Mr. Schue's arrival. Kurt was sitting next to Blaine with Finn on his left. Kurt wasn't really interested in anything going on around him. As far as he could tell Brittany and Santana were discussing Lord Tubbington's recent hobby of playing strip poker with the next door neighbor's parakeet, Finn and Rachel were talking about the set list for Regionals, Mike and Tina were arguing about how Tina refused to eat chicken feet with his mother, and Puck stared off into space. Since none of Kurt's peers were having interesting conversations he turned to Blaine to find his hazel eyes staring back at him.
“Bored much?” Blaine laughed.
“Is it that obvious? I just wish Mr. Schue would show up already.” As if on cue the thirty-something Spanish teacher walked into the room with a certain confidence.
“Alright guys, listen up!” Everyone in the room stopped their conversations and turned towards the man standing at the whiteboard. Obviously he was about to give them an assignment for the week and Kurt was ready for it. Between practicing for his tenor solo and reteaching Blaine how to play the Baritone, he had a new lust for life. He wanted to get something done that would boost his self-confidence and be productive at the same time.
“Okay, this week's lesson is...” Mr. Schuester paused for affect, “Ballads! Everyone will pair up with a partner and sing a song to them expressing their feelings towards that person.” Every couple in the room looked towards their partners with glee.
Mr. Schuester noticed the reaction and quickly spoke up. “Oh no! It's not going to be that easy! You will pick your partner's name from this hat!” He pulled a crumpled up baseball cap from his back pocket and threw it onto the piano.
Blaine couldn't be more nervous about this assignment. He doesn't even know who his partner is yet but the thought of it being anyone but Kurt made his insides flutter. If it wasn't Kurt he couldn't have the chance to really sing his feelings to him, but on the other hand if it was Kurt he was sure he would make a fool of himself.
“Okay, who wants to draw first?”
“Santana does!” Brittany waved her girlfriend's hand in the air with a smile on her naïve face.
“Alright, Santana!” The spicy Latina rolled her eyes as she made her way to the Yankees hat.
She put her hand inside and slowly pulled out a single piece of paper. “Rachel. My God, like the hobbit wants to hear what Auntie Snixx has to say.”
“Oh come on, Santana. I'm sure we'll pull this through. Or at least me and my amazing acting abilities will,” Rachel said tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
One by one the glee club went up and pulled a name from the hat. Puck was paired with Brittany, Mike was paired with Finn, Quinn with Tina and Artie with Mercedes. As the numbers whittled down to only Rory, Sugar, Sam, Lauren, Kurt, and himself, Blaine was hopeful. Subconsciously he wanted Kurt to be his partner. He needed to tell him how he felt and was sure if he didn't do it soon he would burst.
“Alright, Blaine! Your turn!” Mr. Schue said with a smile.
Blaine nervously walked up to the piano and slowly put his hand in and mixed the papers around until he grabbed what he thought would be the right one.
He opened the small slip of paper and stared at the name facing back at him. He turned to the group, “Kurt. I-I have Kurt.”
Kurt smiled and clapped with enthusiasm. Blaine took one look into his crystal blue eyes and was sure that his heart was going to leap out of his chest and land in his love's lap.
He needed to sing to Kurt. And he needed to do it fast.
