As the music swelled and the director quickened the rate his baton was swinging back and forth, the band finished the last note of the piece with a long sforzando. Once the director gently put down both of his raised hands the entire room let out a sigh and lowered their instruments.
“Very good! Best run through so far! Great work, I'll see you tomorrow!” As the bell rang the first tenor sax and the last baritone turned towards each other.
“Blaine, that was amazing.” The porcelain boy said as he removed the brass instrument from his neck strap.
“Are you kidding me! My embouchure was all over the place! I could barely hold the whole note long enough!” Blaine complained as he removed the cupped mouthpiece from the baritone's neck.
“Blaine, you're being modest–,”
“No I'm not, Kurt. I'm last baritone. This should be expected.”
“Blaine!” The curly-haired boy turned toward Kurt with a defeated puppy look on his face. “You are very talented. Just because you're last baritone doesn't mean you aren't good at what you do.”
Blaine sighed, “We should probably go. We'll be late for chemistry.”
Kurt and Blaine had known each other for six years. Both had joined band at the same time and fell in love with their instruments at the same rate. Kurt still remembered the first time he met Blaine.
“Alright class! Open your books to page nine, we will run through Sawmill Creek.” The director said with enthusiasm.
“Ugh, Sawmill Creek again?” The small, shy boy next to him said under his breath.
“You don't like Sawmill Creek!” Kurt said, surprised.
The boy with the big, gleaming baritone looked up at Kurt, shocked to hear that someone heard him.
“Yeah, I don't like it that much.”
“Well, what don't you like about it?” Kurt asked.
“We play it a lot, and I can never get the fingerings right during the triplets,” Blaine said, ashamed of his struggle of wrapping his small arms around the big piece of brass.
“Oh, well I love this song. I think it's so beautiful. But that's just my opinion,” Kurt let out a sigh. “I'm Kurt Hummel, by the way.”
“Blaine Anderson.”
“Nice to meet you, Blaine.”
Blaine smiled at the pale boy's face, “Same to you, Kurt.”
They had been inseparable ever since. Kurt had invited an apprehensive Blaine over for a sleepover and on agreeing started a budding friendship. Kurt trusted Blaine with his life, as did Blaine.
“Psst, hey Kurt!” Blaine whispered during one of Mr. Gregory's endless Chem lectures.
Out of the corner of his mouth Kurt replied, “What do you want? I'm trying to take notes!”
“What are you doing later?”
“I was going to go to the band room and practice my solo for districts.”
“Kurt, you of all people don't need practice.”
“Yes I do, everyone needs practice. What did you want to do?”
“Lima Bean?”
Kurt turned to face the freshly-gelled teen with a smile.
“That sounds perfect. I'll be there at four.”
Blaine knew that something was different about him from the day he was born. Until he met Kurt, he was never sure what that thing was. But the day that he took one look into Kurt's stunning blue eyes and knew that he was gay. He had heard the term before but just wasn't quite sure that it was what he was. He had always heard his dad talking about how they were destroying the country's morals, and Blaine knew that wasn't what he was doing. He just wanted to like other boys. Not that he had any experience with that, well, until he met Kurt.
He had been in love with Kurt since the day he saw him with that shiny tenor slung around his neck. He didn't know if Kurt was gay until later that week when Kurt had invited him over to his house.
Blaine was lying on the floor in his sleeping bag with Kurt in the bed next to him.
“Hey Blaine?” Kurt called.
“Yeah Kurt?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
Kurt stumbled through the silence to find the right words, “Do you know what...gay...is?”
“Yes. It's when two boys or girls like each other, right?”
“Yeah!” Kurt turned to face Blaine on the floor, “Now, can I tell you a secret?”
“Of course you can.”
“I think I'm...that.”
“Gay?” Blaine asked, surprised.
“Yeah...I'm pretty sure.”
“Can I tell you a secret, Kurt?”
“You can tell me anything, Blaine.”
“I think I'm gay too.”
“Really?” Kurt couldn't believe that Blaine was gay.
“Yeah, you're the first person I've told, actually.”
“Same here.”
After a long silence of the two boys thinking about what each of them had just admitted, they fell into a blissful sleep.
Ever since then Blaine had been in love with Kurt Hummel. Just the way that Kurt makes him feel safe, at home with himself, was just enough to make Blaine fall for him. He knew that Kurt doesn't feel the same way, but hopefully one day he could be linked arm-in-arm with him, Kurt proud to call Blaine his boyfriend.
That was what his plan was, anyways.
