Blaine and Rachel found themselves at the altar, two candles and two glasses of wine set on either side of them. The pastor motioned for them to take their candles in their hands once again.
“Master Anderson, from the beginning.” He said in a dull, annoyed voice. “Repeat after me, ‘with this hand I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle I will light your way in darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.’-Let’s try it again.”
“Y-yes sir. With this candle-“he began, bringing his candle to light it.
“Should I go up there and light it for him?” Mrs Anderson remarked dryly.
“Don’t get all a-flutter my dear.” Mr Anderson attempted to sooth her.
“With this candle…”Blaine trailed off.
“Continue! Let’s just pick it up from the candle bit.”
“Yes, of course.” Rachel leaned over and lit his candle with hers. Blaine lifted his left hand.
“Right hand, right.” The pastor drawled. Blaine, nearly dropping his candle switches hands.
“With this…this…” Blaine looks at the pastor in confusion.
“Hand.”
“With this hand…” Blaine continues, taking Rachel’s hand in his. He began to walk her forward. “I…with…” Not paying attention, Blaine walked them into the table at the altar.
“Three steps! Three! Can you not count? Do you not wish to marry, Master Anderson?” The priest demanded angrily.
“No! No-“Blaine started
“You do not?” Rachel demanded.
“No! I meant, no, I do not wish to be married. That is I want very much to…”
The priest raised his bible and smacked Blaine on the head with it “Master Anderson! Pay attention. Have you even remembered to bring the ring?”
“The ring? Why yes of course!” Blaine said, he pulled the ring from inside his jacket, but held it too hard between his fingers causing the ring to slip from his fingers and fly into the congregation behind him. The congregation became outraged at this, and started to voice that outrage.
Blaine ran after the ring as it slid between Lady Berry’s dress and the floor, he reached underneath, much to everyone’s surprise and retrieved the ring, forgetting that the candle was still lit, and in his hand.
“Got it!” he exclaimed, holding up the ring with a smile. However, everyone else was not smiling, as they panicked at the sight of Lady Berry’s skirt catching fire.
“Oh dear! There’s a woman on fire!” Mr. Anderson exclaimed as Lord Berry dashed forward.
“Someone get some water!” He exclaimed. Blaine ran to the table and took his glass of wine and threw it at Lady Berry’s dress.
“Enough! This wedding cannot take place until he is properly prepared! Young man, learn your vows.” The pastor yelled at Blaine. Blaine turned and ran out of the church, and into the forest.
“Rachel must think I’m such a fool. This day could not get any worse.” He sighed as he leaned tiredly against a tree.
“Hear ye, Hear ye! Rehearsal in ruins as Anderson boy causes chaos! Fishy fiancé could be canned!” The town crier announced, apparently things could get worse. Blaine continued deeper into the forest. A few tombstones lay scattered throughout. The forest must have, at one point, served as a final resting place for people in the village.
“It really shouldn’t be all that difficult. It’s just a few simply vows.” He berated himself “With this hand, I will take your wine. No. With this hand, I will cup your-“he cut himself off “Oh goodness no.” He paced deeper and deeper into the forest. “With this candle, I will…I will- set your mother on fire.” He continued on gloomily.
Blaine sat down and took the yellow flower out of his coat pocket. “It’s no use, I’m going to be a disgrace to my family for the rest of my life.” He sighed; he looked at the flower sadly, and then stood up in determination. “With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never empty for I will be your wine.” He paced around the forest, talking to trees as if they were wedding attendees. He found a small twig and snapped it off its branch. “With this candle, I will light your way in darkness.”
He kneeled down in front of a collection of twigs that resembled a hand “With this Ring, I ask you to be mine.” He slipped the ring onto the branch and breathed a sigh of relief. If he could do it like that tomorrow he’d be absolutely fine. The ominous cry of a crow sounded overhead as the wind began to pick up. Blaine looked around suspiciously, strange; it wasn’t supposed to be windy tonight.
Then suddenly, the branch that he had put the ring on grasped his arm and pulled him down, Blaine screamed in surprise. He struggled to get the hand to let go, but its grip tightened. He pulled against it and fell backwards, finally free. But the hand was still gripping his arm. He shook it until it let go. The snow in front of him began to break open. He shuffled back on his hands and feet and ended up plastered to a tree. A figure pulled itself out of the ground. It was a man; he was wearing a white suit, with blue flowers pinned to the lapel. The suit was sewn together with light blue thread. The man’s face was striking, pale with a blue tinge in some places. The man regarded him with bright eyes.
“I do.” He breathed making his way toward Blaine.
Blaine’s breath caught and he began to run. The man found his hand, and reattached it to his wrist. Blaine kept running as the man followed, he was getting closer. Blaine looked back as he was running and ended up running face first into a tree. His eye blurred and he saw the outline of the man getting closer. He continued to run, and ended up alone on the bridge to the village. He caught his breath. Tears blurred his eyes once again and he felt a cold presence behind him. He turned and the man was right there behind him. He backed up and found himself caught between the man and the railing on the bridge.
The man reached for his face, and pulled him in and kissed him.
And Blaine’s world went black.
