Because you became used to the idea of having that person around.

On Kurt's ninety-fifth birthday, they get the news. Blaine's cancer is back and this time it's terminal. Over twenty years ago he'd had battle with prostate cancer but that had been in remission for fifteen years now. Now it's spread to his pancreas. He may have six months to live, or six days, there's no way to really know.
