In which Blaine is the only gay kid at McKinley being bullied by Karofsky. What happens when he has a run in with Kurt Hummel, who happens to be the lead singer of his competition for glee at Dalton?
Author's Notes: For Klaine Week Day 2: Klaine AU
Blaine steadily glided down the stairs of Dalton Academy with elegance, wondering where the rush was headed. He removed his sunglasses and stuffed them in his coat and tapped a boys shoulder. “Excuse me?”
The boy turned around. Blaine’s first impression of him was that he was an absolute beauty. His glasz eyes that could hypnotize Blaine with just one word. His perfectly coiffed chestnut brown that looked like it would be a crime to touch. His beautiful porcelain skin made him look like a doll rather than a human being. His tall structure that just made him even more captivating. Blaine cleared his throat and told the boy, “Can I ask you a question? I’m new here.”
The boy stuffed his pocket watch back in his pocket and offered a hand. “My name’s Kurt,” the boy said, his voice like an angel.
Blaine grabbed Kurt’s hand and shook it. “Blaine,” he introduced himself. “So - uh, what’s everyone in a hurry for?” Blaine asked skeptically.
“The Warblers!” Kurt calmly exclaimed. “Every month they give an impromptu performance in the senior commons.” Kurt leaned towards Blaine a little bit and told him, “It tends to shut the school down for a little bit.”
Blaine furrowed his brow, but still smiled and asked, “So, wait. The glee club here is kind of cool?”
Kurt rolled his eyes and said, “The Warblers are like rock stars.” The two boys exchanged a smile for a moment until Kurt grabbed Blaine’s hand and told him, “Come on, I know a short cut.”
Everything seemed to go in slow motion after that. They ran through the halls of Dalton together, hand-in-hand. Blaine looked around at all the scenery at Dalton. Kurt looked back at Blaine occasionally and smiled at him. When they finally arrived at the double doors of the senior commons, Kurt let go of Blaine’s hand and opened the doors to let the two of them in the room with dozens of other boys in blazers and sweaters with an embroidered ‘D’ across the heart in the colors of red and blue with a matching tie. Blaine, now feeling awkward in his black pea coat, told Kurt, “Wow. I stick out like a sore thumb.”
Kurt rolled his eyes and fixed the collar of Blaine’s coat and told him, “Next time, don’t forget your jacket, new kid. You’ll fit right in.” Kurt winked at Blaine as a familiar a cappella melody began behind Kurt. Kurt whispered to Blaine, “Now, if you’ll excuse me.” Kurt turned around and began to sing with the rest of the Warblers.
Before you met me, I was alright
But things were kind of heavy, you brought me to life
Now every February, you’ll be my Valentine.
Valentine.
The popular Katy Perry song that Blaine recognized had him baffled. The arrangement was absolutely amazing and breath taking. And Blaine could have sworn Kurt was singing it to him.
Let’s go all the way tonight
No regrets, just love
We can dance until we die
You and I
Will be young forever
Blaine was fascinated by the countertenor’s voice. It was beautiful. It was almost unfit to sing this song, but it was all too perfect for him not to sing it.
You make me
Feel like I’m living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on
I can’t sleep
Let’s run away and don’t ever look back
Don’t ever look, Let’s go all
The way tonight
No regrets, just love
We can dance until we die
You and I will be young forever
Blaine couldn’t be smiling any bigger than he was at that moment. It felt as if the Warblers all seemed to like him because it just seemed they all like Blaine already.
You make mer32;
Feel like I’m living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on
I can’t sleep
Let’s run away and don’t ever look back, don’t ever look
I’m-a get your heart racing in my skin tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Blaine looked around at the short interlude the Warblers sang to see how many people were enjoying this. Blaine never had anyone at his own school like their glee club. Even most of the teachers didn’t support it! But seeing the student body react like this was a pop group concert was absolutely stunning.
When the chorus repeated for the last time, Blaine could have sworn Kurt’s voice was the voice of a myriad of angels.
You make me
Feel like I’m living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on
I can’t sleep
Let’s run away and don’t ever look back, don’t ever look back
My heart stops when you look at me
Just one touch, now baby, I believe
This is real, so take a chance and don’t ever look back, don’t ever look -
I’m-a get your heart racing in my skin tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Let you put your hands on me in my skin tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
After the final ‘tonight’, the entire room bursted in applause. Kurt was giving his regards to his fellow class mates when he looked over at Blaine and saw he was smiling and clapping with enthusiasm.
“Latte?” Kurt offered Blaine the coffee cup by sliding it across the table.
“Thank you,” Blaine told Kurt as he took the cup in his hands.
Kurt swallowed his coffee and introduced his friends. “This is Wes,” Kurt gestured to the Asian boy sitting at his right, “and David,” and then to the black boy on his left.
Blaine smiled and told the three boys, “It’s very civilized of you for you to invite me for coffee before you beat me up for spying.
Wes smiled and assured Blaine, “We are not going to beat you up.”
“We thought that since you were such a terrible spy that it was sort of...” David searched for the right word and finally came out with, “endearing.”
“Which is why I think spying isn’t really the reason you came,” Kurt told Blaine, cocking an eyebrow.
Blaine sighed and asked the three older boys, “C-can I ask you guys a question?”
The three boys nodded, silently telling Blaine that it was okay to ask his question.
“A-are you guys all gay?” Blaine stumbled out.
The boys all started to laugh. Kurt was the first to speak up. “Uh, no. I mean, I am, but these two,” he elbowed his friends, “have girlfriends.”
“This isn’t a gay school,” David assured Blaine. “We just have a zero-tolerance harassment policy at Dalton.”
“Everybody gets treated the same no matter what they are,” Wes added.
Blaine was uncomfortable. He was breathing heavily, trying to hold back the tears that were obviously going to come down in streams.
Kurt gave Blaine a worried look as if he were saying, “Blaine, is everything okay?” Instead, Kurt asked his friends, “Could you guys excuse us?”
David nodded and Wes patted Blaine’s shoulder. “Take it easy, Blaine,” Wes told the curly haired boy.
Soon, the tears just erupted from Blaine’s face. Kurt gave Blaine a sympathetic look and said, “I take it you’re having trouble at school.”
“Th-there’s this Neanderthal at my school and - and he’s made it his mission to make my life a living hell,” Blaine stuttered out, letting his tears fall onto the hardwood table. “A-and I try to stay strong, b-but I get tired of it and - and nobody seems to notice.”
Kurt pursed his lips and replied. “I know how you feel. I got taunted at my old school and it really pissed me off.” Kurt sighed. “I even complained about it to the faculty. I mean, they were sympathetic and all, but you could just tell that nobody really cared. It’s just like, ‘Hey, if you’re gay, your life is just going to be miserable. Sorry, nothing we can do about it.” Kurt slumped back in his chair. “So I left there and came here. Simple as that.”
Blaine sighed and sipped his coffee as Kurt continued. “So you have two options. I mean, I’d love to tell you that you can just come enroll here, but tuition’s pretty steep and I know that’s not for everybody. Or, you can refuse to be the victim.”
Blaine set down his coffee and stared into Kurt’s eyes with fascination. “Prejudice is just ignorance, Blaine.”
“But how do I stand up?” Blaine asked skeptically.
“Confront him!” Kurt immediately pitched. “Call him out!” Kurt scooted closer to the table and explained to Blaine, “I ran, Blaine. I let bullies chase me away and it’s something that I really, really regret.”
Blaine considers Kurt’s decision and confronts his bully, but it only ends worse than he thought. The week ends by Blaine having his first kissed forced upon him by his bully and Kurt trying to make Blaine happier by food and the repetition of a single word; courage.
