An AU based off the novel and movie A Walk to Remember by Nicolas Sparks. Blaine wasn't supposed to fall in love with Kurt Hummel, but he had always had a hard time doing what he was told.
"I only have one request, Anderson, if I agree to help you." Blaine smirked and looked expectantly at Kurt.
"Yeah, and what's that?"
"You have to promise not to fall in love with me." Kurt's expression was stoic and Blaine couldn't stop the laugh that escaped him. He saw that Kurt's face hadn't changed and Blaine quirked an eyebrow at him.
"You're serious about that?"
"Yes." Blaine just stared at him for a moment before shaking his head and laughing again.
"Believe me, that won't be an issue."
But that's exactly what had happened. Blaine had fallen so unexpectedly in love with Kurt Hummel that it made him do crazy things, well, crazy compared to him. He was turning his back on the friends he had had for years, but considering the way they treated Kurt, himself included, over the past few years, that wasn't really such a bad thing at all. He was going against everything he used to know just to be with some guy, but he knew Kurt was more than that. He knew Kurt was special.
"Where are we going?" Kurt asked in the passenger seat. They had been driving around for about twenty minutes now, Kurt more confused as Blaine warded off his questions.
"You'll see," was the only response Kurt got and he huffed in exasperation. Blaine smiled and with one hand remaining on the steering wheel, grabbed Kurt's hand with the other. He felt the small squeeze from Kurt's hand and squeezed back reassuringly.
A few more minutes and Blaine pulled off the road down a gravel path that led to a huge barn. Blaine reluctantly removed his hand from Kurt's to kill the engine.
"We have arrived at our destination."
"Here?" Kurt squeaked. He looked around nervously, eyes focusing in the dark. "Have you taken me out here to kill me, Anderson?"
"No, I've got something to show you, come on. Oh and grab a flashlight out of the glove box on your way out." Kurt threw him a pointed look but did as requested and Blaine met him around the truck, taking his hand and the flashlight away.
"I've got you. We're going inside there." He pointed to the large barn looming in the distance.
"If I had known we were going on a hike, I wouldn't have dressed so nicely," Kurt griped, but gripped Blaine's hand and followed behind him carefully. They walked in silence until they were a few feet away from the door.
"Wait right here. I'll be right back."
"Wasn't planning on going anywhere," Kurt said to Blaine's retreating back. Blaine creaked open the door and let it shut back behind him so Kurt wouldn't see inside. He shined a light around and smiled. Everything was ready. He came back outside to stand behind him and handed him the flashlight.
"Hold on to that and close your eyes," Blaine whispered in his ear. Kurt shivered and closed them while Blaine placed his hands over his eyes.
"What, you don't trust me?" Kurt teased as Blaine instructed him to walk forward.
"Just being cautious." They stepped inside and Kurt could smell the dust and hay in the air.
"Why are we-?"
"Step a little to your left," Blaine interrupted. Kurt took a small step and felt something brush against his foot.
"What was that?"
"Put your foot on it and press down," was all Blaine said. Kurt did so and heard a sudden noise in the room.
"Uh, what's going on, Blaine?"
"I'm about to let you see. Are you ready?" Kurt just nodded and Blaine slowly removed his hands. Kurt's eyes were still closed behind his lids but they fluttered open against the brightness that Blaine's hands had been shielding. Adjusting to the sudden change, Kurt looked up to see the words KURT HUMMEL strewn up and decorated in bright lights. He gasped and leaned back into Blaine's chest.
"Blaine what, what is this? What did you do?"
"It's number two on your list, to have your name in big lights when you made it to New York. I know this isn't the big city but I figured I could bring the city to you instead." Kurt felt tears well up in his eyes, shock and admiration filling his chest. He turned around, eyes swimming as he stared at Blaine.
"Why would you…why would you do this?"
"Kurt..." and as soon as he heard the way Blaine said his name, he knew. He knew by the tone and serious look that crossed his face. He knew what Blaine was about to tell him and he wished he didn't.
"Kurt, I love you." Kurt's eyes widened and Blaine waited, searched his eyes for an answer, but all Kurt could do was stare. He imagined he looked like a deer caught in headlights but he couldn't move, didn't dare stir the air between then. Blaine's eyes darted away from Kurt's and he laughed nervously.
"Now would be the time to respond with, uh, something. Anything really would do at this point." Kurt was still wide-eyed and Blaine's palms were starting to sweat. Finally, Kurt opened his mouth to speak.
"I told you not to fall in love with me," Kurt said, but his body relaxed a bit and Blaine smiled again.
"Kurt...I'm going to kiss you now."
Kurt gulped. "I have about as much kissing experience as a baby penguin." Blaine smiled wide and stepped closer.
"It doesn't matter," and before Kurt could reply, Blaine was in front of him, cupping his face with his right hand and pulling Kurt to his lips. He didn't know what he was doing but Blaine was being gentle, just pressing their lips together for a moment. Then Blaine's mouth began moving against his own and he followed the movements of his own accord.
They moved together and it was sweet and passionate and Kurt wished to himself at some point as to why he had waited so long to experience this. Blaine finally pulled away as Kurt grabbed air into his lungs. Their foreheads pressed together and Blaine still held Kurt's face in his hand, rubbing Kurt's cheek gently. Kurt nuzzled into it, relishing in the comforting feeling Blaine's hands gave him.
"So what's number one on your list?" Blaine asked. Kurt looked him dead in the eyes, gaze strong, lips shut in a thin line. Blaine waited, eyes never moving from Kurt's. Blaine could almost see the thoughts running around his head as he debated on whether or not to tell him. Blaine was just about to speak up to let him know he didn't have to say anything when Kurt spoke up first.
"I want to witness a miracle." Blaine didn't know how to respond, but Kurt didn't leave him a chance to try when he pulled Blaine back in for another kiss. He loved him. Kurt loved Blaine so much and it was beautiful and up-lifting and scary and unnerving but god did he love Blaine.
"Blaine, I'm sick."
"No, no! Not like that! I mean I'm really sick. Sick as in, I'm never going to get better."
"Blaine, it's leukemia. I have leukemia."
"I found out a couple of years ago and I stopped responding to treatment."
"I just want to live, Blaine! I didn't want this to be a death sentence."
"No, there isn't anything you can do. Just, stay with me. Please?"
Blaine was sitting beside Kurt's bed, both hands holding Kurt's small limp one. His eyes were puffy and red from crying and lack of sleep. Kurt was looking at him, his breathing labored and short.
"Don't...look like that. You'll age....prematurely. And...wrinkles." Blaine only gripped his hand harder and tears spilled from his eyes.
"But you won't," he sobbed. "You won't....won't a-age. Never turn gray or w-w-wrinkle," Blaine's body heaved with sobs. He couldn't breathe. His lungs were too tight in his chest and his vision was too distorted by his constant tears.
"It's just...my time," Kurt wheezed out.
"No!" Blaine shouted, suddenly furious. "This isn't your time! You were doing just fine six months ago! Even a month or so ago, you were alright! You can get better! You can!" Blaine's voice broke, sobs taking over again.
"Blaine, I've accepted that I was going to die a long time ago. This is just how it's supposed to be. I accepted it. But," his voice trailed off and then a small smile formed on his lips.
"But I got you. Out of all of this, I got the best thing imaginable and I wouldn't change that for anything. I'd rather spend a few months being blissfully happy with you than live a long life without you." Blaine was crying again. Had he even stopped? His head dropped down onto the bed beside their hands.
"I even got my number one," Kurt whispered. Blaine's head whipped up and Kurt smiled faintly before he felt Kurt's hand go limp. Kurt's breathing stilled completely and his heart rate slowed until-
"Kurt!" Blaine was looking at Kurt's now lifeless body as he shook him once. "Kurt, Kurt, wake up! Wake up, Kurt, please! Please Kurt, baby, please..." but Kurt remained lifeless and un-moving in the hospital bed, eyes distant and cold and no longer looking at Blaine, but at nothing, nothing at all.
"I wish I could have given him his miracle."
"You did. The miracle he witnessed, that was you, Blaine. You were his miracle."
Kurt's love was like the wind: Blaine couldn't see it, but he could feel it, always with him, always present and always reminding him that he wasn't alone.
