Blaine was eating dinner with his parents when his phone rang. His father gave him a stern look, telling Blaine to turn off his cell, but when Blaine excused himself to do so, the name on the screen stopped him immediately. Blaine glanced at his parents, already back to eating as if the disturbance never happened and continued not to happen, before clicking the answer button and walking into the bathroom as quickly as his legs would carry him.

“Kurt? Kurt, are you okay?” There was a pause on the other side of the line before he heard his boyfriend’s voice.

“Yeah, I just,” Kurt broke off, a slightly delirious laugh filling the silence. “I’m having a hard time sleeping. New York is a lot louder than Lima. Every time I close my eyes I can hear car horns and people yelling and the apartment makes weird noises and it’s really bright, even with the curtains pulled.”

“Hey, it’s your first night in New York. You’re not supposed to sleep. Besides, I thought you and Rachel were going out tonight to see the city?”

“We were, but we decided to have a night in instead.” Blaine nodded, forgetting Kurt couldn’t see him. “I miss you,” Kurt said softly. “I know I just saw you this morning, but it’s different. Maybe because I know that I can’t just call you when I have a bad dream and sneak you through my window.”

“I’ll hop on a plane and be there in a heartbeat. You just say the word.” Kurt smiled sadly.

“That goes for you too, Blaine. I love you.”

“I love you too. Did you already unpack?”

“Not everything. Only the pieces that would wrinkle.”

“Check the front pocket of your suitcase.”

“What are you-?” Kurt pulled back his duvet and slid on his slippers before making the few steps to his suitcase in the corner of his new room. He bent down, tucking the phone between his shoulder and ear, and tugged open the zipper. “Blaine! When did you-?”

“I snuck him in there when I was helping you pack,” Blaine said, imagining the smile on Kurt’s face as he looked down at the orange kitten plushie Blaine had gotten him. “I thought you might need something to cuddle when I’m not there.”

“He’s perfect. C’mon, Blainers, let’s go to bed,” Kurt said and Blaine glared at the ceiling.

“You’re naming him ‘Blainers?’”

“He’s your stand-in, Blaine. Live with it.”

“Well!” Blaine said, faux scandalized. Kurt settled back into bed, snuggling Blainers to his chest with one hand and holding the phone with the other.

“Promise me we’ll see each other soon,” Kurt said and Blaine closed his eyes, wishing for nothing more than to be lying next to Kurt.

“I promise,” Blaine said, already planning on talking to his parents about it when he gets off the phone with Kurt.

“Sing me to sleep?”

“Of course.” Blaine kept his voice low as he sang Breathless, trying to sooth Kurt to sleep. When the song was finished, Kurt breathing sounded slow and heavy, unconsciousness taking hold of him. “Goodnight, beautiful,” Blaine said. He listened to Kurt breath for a little bit longer before moving to hang up, but paused when he heard a mostly asleep Kurt mumble, “I love you.”

“I love you too, honey. Sweet dreams.” To which Kurt let out a soft hum.
End Notes: Song that was named was Breathless by Alex Goot. Even though I didn't add lyrics or anything, I thought I'd add this if anyone wanted to hear it. It's a beautiful song.
