Just as Blaine was approaching the Hummel-Hudson house, he started to have second thoughts. His palms became so sweaty and sticky he had to wipe them on his jeans before he properly open the car door. He and Kurt had been dating for a year now, and today was their anniversary. Blaine knew that Kurt thought it was too early to get married, but Blaine was ready to pop the question now.
Or at least he thought he was.
Blaine had everything set to get down on one knee and ask Kurt to marry him, but now he wasn't sure if he was ready. There was no doubt in Blaine's mind that Kurt loved him and cared for him deeply, but if Kurt said no, it would surely tear him to shreds.
Of course Blaine didn't want to get married right away, no. He would ask Kurt to marry him, but wait until after college, then find sufficient jobs in the big city, and when the time was right, they would of course tie the knot.
Blaine made his way up the steps leading to the front door, and rang the doorbell. He wiped his forearm across his face, trying to rid it of sweat. It didn't work. Blaine could just see tiny beads of it glinting in the reflection of the windows nearest the door.
Kurt answered the door wearing Blaine's favorite outfit on him: black skinny jeans with knee-high black boots and a very fitted Wicked T-shirt (Blaine had told Kurt to wear casual clothes for this date) and a white jacket.
Kurt almost tackled Blaine into a bear hug and grinned from ear to ear as he said, "Happy Anniversary Blaine!"
Blaine smiled into Kurt's shoulder and said, "Happy Anniversary, babe!"
Kurt released Blaine and the couple made their way to Blaine's car. "So where are we going today?" Kurt asked as he buckled his seat belt.
"Well I thought we would have dinner at Breadstix and then the rest is a surprise," said Blaine with hint of teasing in his voice.
Kurt smiled and jokingly stuck his tongue out at Blaine as he started the car. Kurt knew where Blaine kept all his CD's, and they listened to Katy Perry's Teenage Dream.
Blaine wasn't sweating anymore; he knew that he didn't have any reason to doubt that Kurt didn't want to marry him. He couldn't help picturing their future together: live in New York City, Kurt would be on Broadway and Blaine playing music at night clubs, maybe they would adopt a few children. Things like these always made Blaine smile. A future with Kurt is exactly what he wants.
Ten minutes later the boys make their way into Breadstix and sit down at a beautiful table that Blaine had reserved for them. He made sure that there were Lilac scented candles on the table (Kurt's favorite) and a gorgeous rose placed over Kurt's dinner plate. Kurt was absolutely overjoyed that Blaine had made this dinner very special and gave him one of his special bone-crushing hugs and an excited squeal. Blaine kissed Kurt's cheek and they sat down to look at their menus.
Blaine looked over his menu to see his boyfriend looking intently at his own menu. Blaine noticed how Kurt's tongue was slightly sticking out of the side of his mouth as he thought about what to eat, and this made Blaine chuckle.
Kurt looked up from his menu and asked, "Why are you giggling?"
Blaine turned on his charm and replied, "I was just thinking of how cute you are," and Blaine mimicked how Kurt's tongue was sticking out of his mouth. Kurt rolled his eyes and smiled. Blaine gave his best pouty-face and stuck his tongue out at Kurt.
The couple laughed and resumed looking at their menus. When the waitress came, Kurt ordered the mushroom ravioli and Blaine ordered the lasagna.
While their food was being prepared, Kurt started to talk about college. Of course Kurt had wanted to go to college at Juliard in New York, and Blaine was going there as well. It was nearly the end of the school year and both boys decided on Juliard for college to study music. Kurt talked about his dream of being on Broadway, and Blaine listened wholeheartedly to him.
Blaine already knew that he was in love with Kurt, but now he knew that he loved him more than ever. He loved everything about him, the way he sometimes has a slight lisp, the way he can dream so big, everything.
When the meals were eaten and paid for, Blaine and Kurt walked back outside and once again into Blaine's car.
"Are you going to tell me where we're going now?" asked Kurt.
"Nope", said Blaine with a smile, "And to keep it a secret until we get there, I'm afraid you're going to have to wear this," and he handed Kurt a purple blindfold.
Kurt looked in disgust at the cloth and said, "No way," but when Blaine's puppy eyes swayed his answer, he rolled his eyes and tied the blindfold around his head.
"And no peeking!" said Blaine as they drove off.
It took a good forty-minutes to get where Blaine was taking him and Kurt. Kurt would periodically ask where they were going or if he could look yet, to which Blaine answered, "I'm not telling you until we get there," or "Not yet sweetie".
Blaine pulled into the parking lot of where his meant to pop the question to Kurt, and told him to take off his blindfold.
"Dalton?" asked Kurt in astonishment, "Why are we at Dalton, Blaine?"
Blaine ignored his question and said, "Follow me."
The boys got out from the car and Blaine took Kurt's hand in his. Blaine smiled at Kurt and led him to the front doors of Dalton. It was 10:00 on a Saturday night, and under normal circumstances Blaine would not be able to get in. But he asked Wes and David to unlock the front doors to the main building after the security guards had locked them.
Blaine pushed open the front doors and guided Kurt to the place they first met: the main staircase.
Kurt grinned when he saw that Blaine had brought them to the place they first met on their anniversary, "Aww Blaine, this is so romantic!" And he wrapped his arms around Blaine and pecked him on the lips.
"Kurt?" Blaine asked.
"Yeah?"
T-there's something I wanted to ask you," stuttered Blaine. The nervous feeling had just returned, this time at least twenty times worse. But he knew that he would have to go ahead and ask the question, now.
Kurt looked puzzled and unwrapped his arms around Blaine and took a step back.
Blaine was silent for a moment, trying to get his thoughts into the right words. He sucked in a deep breath of air and began, "I love you Kurt (Kurt smiled from ear to ear and nodded that he loved him back), and I have realized something. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I know it's a little early..." Blaine pulled the small box out of his pocket and got down on one knee and he looked right at Kurt, into his beautiful blue-green eyes and saw tears. He knew that they were tears of joy, because he had never seen Kurt smile so sincerely, "but will you marry me?"
Blaine opened the box and inside was the most beautiful ring Kurt had ever seen. It was thin and made of silver platinum, and on the outside the words 'Courage' were etched. Both boys were silent. Kurt opened his mouth, but no words came out. Instead he pulled Blaine into another crushing hug, tears streaming down his face, and said, "Yes! Oh Blaine, of course I'll marry you!"
Blaine felt tears leave his eyes as well, and he clutched his boyfriend- Fiance, rather- even tighter in his arms.
The boys stood there, at the bottom of the Dalton staircase grasped in each other's arms for a long time.
Finally Kurt asked, "Did you ask my dad first?"
Blaine laughed, tears still pooling in his eyes, "Of course. He was reluctant at first, but then I explained that it was going to be a while before we actually got married, and that I just wanted to propose."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
End Notes: My first fic, so how did I do? Reviews are always and forever appreciated.
