We're Both Going to Wake Up Soon

The sun was high in the clear blue sky and a gentle breeze moved through the trees. Birds chirped happily as they zoomed in and out of trees. Kurt and Blaine walked hand in hand through a small park, grinning widely.

This was a regular occurrence. They would drive out of town to go on their weekly walks through the park a few miles outside Lima and just enjoy the experience of being together.

They exchanged coy glances and every once in a while, Blaine lightly squeezed Kurt's hand. Blaine was sure that Kurt thought he did it because it was a comforting gesture, but the real reason Blaine did it was because he wanted to remind himself that Kurt was real. That the lovely blue-eyed boy in front of him was his and only his. And that was what comforted him.

Blaine gazed as Kurt as Kurt watched a bright blue butterfly flutter through the air as it flew past him. Kurt caught Blaine staring at him and frowned.

"What? Is there something on my face?" Kurt asked, self-consciously bringing the hand that wasn't holding Blaine's to his cheek. Blaine chuckled and pressed his lips against Kurt's. Kurt let out a little yelp before allowing himself to sink into the kiss.

"Your face is perfect," Blaine said, his mouth hovering inches away from Kurt's mouth. "I just can't believe I'm lucky enough to have some like you in my life."

"You're so cheesy," Kurt teased, eye twinkling. Blaine grinned.

"The cheesiest," he murmured and kissed Kurt again, this time deeper. Tongues flicked out and lips were lightly nibbled and licked and soon Blaine and Kurt were lost in a world of just the two of them.

The sound of a small child laughing brought them back to reality. They broke apart, blushing furiously, remembering that were in public and there were actually other people around. They caught each other's eyes and started laughing and a warm feeling washed over Blaine's body. Blaine admired the way the sun illuminated Kurt's flushed skin and got the urge to kiss him again. At that moment, he knew he wanted nothing more than to be with Kurt Hummel for the rest of his life.

But that was months ago and things were different now.

It started with the canceled dates. Kurt canceled the first few. The Thursday they were supposed to go the Lima Bean after school just had Kurt calling Blaine up when Blaine had just left the building of McKinley High, hastily explaining that he had to do "something" with Rachel.

"Do what with Rachel?" Blaine asked. Kurt's voice came in and out of the receiver like he was losing reception.

"I-and Rachel didn't think-we're already there-call you later!" And then he hung up. Blaine stared dumbly down at the phone in his hand. It's just one date, Blaine said to himself.
But it wasn't just one date.

The next time, Kurt didn't call him before standing him up at Breadstix. Blaine waited for three hours, gorging himself on the stale breadsticks that some blonde waitress kept dropping at his table. She gave him a sympathetic look each time before leaving another basket of bread on his table.

"There's nothing wrong with being stood up," she said when she dropped off his twelfth basket of breadsticks. "Maybe she's not the one."

"It's my boyfriend," Blaine told her.

"Oh," was all she said. Blaine checked his phone for messages, but there wasn't anything new. Blaine asked for the check, paid, and left the restaurant. Blaine stepped outside and shivered against the cold night air. He tried not to think about how Kurt would have pulled him close and buried his nose in Blaine's neck if he was there. He took out his phone and dialed Kurt's number. He allowed it to ring six times before he hung up and started walking home.

Kurt hadn't mentioned the forgotten date at Breadsticks, so Blaine decided to show him how it felt by not showing up to Breadsticks for their date exactly a week afterwards.

Kurt hadn't mentioned that either.

Blaine could feel things changing between them. More often than not, they were quiet when they were alone together. With friends, they would smile and casually chat as if everything were fine. But alone, not a word. Blaine wanted to scream. He wanted to yell at Kurt for not trying hard enough to make them perfect, the way they used to be. He was certainly trying, but there were times like he felt Kurt didn't even care. Sometimes it was like Kurt wasn't even there at all.

When winter came, the cold nights they used to spend wrapped around each other were now chilly evenings on opposite sides of the couch in the Hudson-Hummel living room, not saying a word to each other.

Blaine opened his mouth to speak, but he knew even if he said anything, Kurt wouldn't be listening. Kurt was too engrossed on the reality show he was watching on the television a few feet in front of them. His body was leaning away from Blaine and his left leg was crossed over his right with his hands folded over his knee.

On more than one occasion Blaine caught himself staring at Kurt's profile, but not feeling the warm fluttery feeling that used to run over his body whenever he looked at his boyfriend. Instead there was a dull ache in his chest. Kurt felt Blaine's eyes on him and turned to face Blaine, tilting his head and gazing at him with inquisitive eyes.

"Honey, are you okay?" Kurt asked. Blaine nodded.

"Of course," he said automatically. He then added: "I love you." Kurt smiled and said it back before turning back to the television. Anybody who witnessed the scene would think they were still heads over heels in love, but both Kurt and Blaine knew there was no truth in their words.
What they used to have was gone.

The spark of their relationship had fizzled out and now it felt like it was just dragging on. For three months now, it had been this was and Blaine didn't know how to fix it. What scared him most was that he didn't know if he wanted to fix it. He just wanted this game they were playing to be over.

They kept up the charade, though, for other people. People no longer saw them as Kurt and Blaine. They had now fused and become KurtandBlaine and they had to be KurtandBlaine, even if they didn't want to. Blaine didn't explicitly asked Kurt, but he knew Kurt wanted it to end, too. He had become distant. There were now secrets and new walls built up between them. They might have been KurtandBlaine for others, but they both knew there was nothing left for either of them in this relationship.

They still had sex of course, but long gone were the tender moments and mind-blowing orgasms. Blaine would go down on Kurt, licking and sucking his hard cock and Kurt would groan and gasp, but there was always be a flicker of boredom in his eyes. Almost like he just wanted Blaine to hurry up so they could get it over with. Sex had become an obligation. It was no longer about them coming together and experiencing something special. They was no lovely afterglow after they had jerked each other off and laid back in bed until one of them got up to find something to clean each other off with. Sex always came with the unspoken rule "I'm supposed to love you. You're supposed to love me. We're supposed to do this."

One night, after cleaning himself up, Blaine curled up on Kurt's bed, his back facing Kurt's back. Lately, they had frequently slept turned away from each other. Spooning felt too much like a lie and sleeping face to face reminded them of what they had lost in their relationship and it hurt too much. They didn't decide together to do things this way; it had just happened. When Blaine heard Kurt's steady breaths, his eyes stung with tears. He didn't want to lose Kurt; he just didn't know how to keep him around. He could feel him drifting away.

"Kurt?" Blaine's voice came out strangled as he tried to choke back a sob. He heard nothing from the boy next to him. "Kurt, you know I love you, right?" Still no response. Blaine blinked, allowing his tears to fall. "Because I still do. I still love you." He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

When Blaine woke up the next morning, he immediately knew something was wrong. Kurt wasn't beside him. Blaine wasn't even in Kurt's bed anymore. He was on a small, stiff hospital bed with leather straps holding down his arms and legs. He tried to move, but he couldn't. Panic coursed through his body. He tried to thrash his body left and right, but all that moved was his head.

"Help!" he screamed. "Somebody help!" He didn't know why he was screaming. . Whoever came wouldn't be on his side. Obviously whoever came would have been one of the people who kidnapped him and strapped him down or at least would know who did it

Kidnapped. The word rang through Blaine's head and he felt his heart thumping in his ears. He was kidnapped. What if he never saw him family again? Or Kurt?

"Somebody help me!" he begged as tears streamed down his face. "I-I don't know what you want, just don't kill me. Please!"

A few people ran into the room and their faces were blurred as he tried to look at them through his tears.

"Who's there?" Blaine asked in a shaky voice. The blurred figures moved closer to him and one of them gently touched his arm.

"B, it's me," Blaine heard someone say. He knew that voice. Blaine blinks away the tears and turned to his left, in the direction of the voice.

"Cooper?" His brother nodded and smiled down at him. Cooper's steely blue eyes calmed Blaine a little, but he still didn't know why he was there. "Where's K-"

"Blaine!" a woman's voice gasped. He heard the clink of heels against the floor and then felt someone throw their arms over him and hug him tightly.

"M-Mom?" What's going on? He wondered. And where's Kurt? Blaine's head started swimming and he closed his eyes. He wanted nothing more than to be back in Kurt's house. He didn't know what was happening and he didn't like it.

Blaine felt something hot and moist on his right ear and it took him a minute to realize his mother was whispering into it.

"Blaine, we'll get you home, I promise. You'll get better and then you'll come home with us," she was saying. Get better? Blaine opened his eyes and knit his eyebrows.

"Get better? What do you mean get better?" Blaine asked. His mother just stood straight up and looked at him. She wasn't that tall, even in heels she was barely 5'3" and when Cooper moved to her side and clasped her hand, he towered over her.

"Blaine, you'll be out soon," his mother said. He didn't understand. There were three other people in the room with them. Blaine assumed two of them were hospital attendants and the other one was a doctor. The doctor called his mother and they talked in hushed voices. Cooper gave him a warm smile, but Blaine could see the sadness in his eyes.

"Coop, what's happening?" Blaine asked. Cooper blinked and Blaine could see his eyes shine with tears.

"We tried to visit more often, Blaine," Cooper told him, his voice quivering. "We really did, but they said it wasn't good for you. They said seeing us all the time would only make you sicker. They told us you were getting better and they didn't want to take the chance of you going back to how you used to be."

"How I used to-Cooper, what are you talking about?" Blaine asked. Things were really getting weird now. "And where is Kurt?"

The silence in the room was deafening.

Everyone in the room froze and stared at him. Cooper's mouth was open and the terrified look on his face made Blaine nervous. He looked around the room, but everyone was just looking at him.

"Did I say something wrong?" Blaine asked.

"Three months!" his mother screeched. She turned to the doctor and waved a finger in his face. "You said with medicine and careful evaluation, after three months he would be fine."

"I-I don't know what happened. We monitored his brain waves a-and everything seemed-" His doctor turned to one of the attendants. "Call Dr. Maloney in here, please." The attendant nodded and ran out. Blaine turned to Cooper.

"What's going on, Coop? What did I do?" Blaine asked.

Cooper's face was ghostly white and he glanced at his mother who was too busy screaming at the doctor to notice them. Cooper cleared his throat.

"Blaine, there is no Kurt," Cooper said.

No.
Cooper must be playing some sort of sick joke. He has met Kurt. How can he say there's no Kurt?

"What are you talking about, Cooper? Kurt's my boyfriend," Blaine said, trying to speak calmly.

"No, h-he's not," Cooper stammered. "That's why you're here. You kept telling us about this ‘Kurt' and about how was your boyfriend. A-and one day you got all dressed up and told us you were going to prom at Kurt's school, so M-Mom and I followed you and...you didn't go anywhere. You got in your car and you drove a few miles away from home and just stayed in the car, laughing to yourself."

"We were worried, but Dad said it was probably nothing. But then you started talking about transferring to some school called McKinley to be closer to Kurt. We assumed you were still getting bullied at school and we were going to talk to the administration. I mean, they didn't do anything when you got beat up, but we didn't know what else to do. So Mom planned to go down to your school and talk to them, but then y-you..." Cooper took a deep breath. "You threw a rock or something into your eye and told us you got hurt taking a slushie in the face for Kurt."

No, Cooper was wrong. Blaine didn't want to hear him talk anymore.

"That doesn't even make sense," Blaine said. "There is no bullying at Dalton Academy."

The pained expression on Cooper's face made Blaine's heart drop to the floor. "B, there is no Dalton Academy," Cooper said. "At least not in Ohio."

"Shut up!" Blaine yelled. "Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up!" Cooper moved from Blaine's side and Blaine saw tears fall from his eyes. Cooper walked over to the door of the room and exhaled, not looking at his brother.

For the first time, he noticed there were now two doctors in the room with him and his mother had left the room. The doctors were muttering to each other and looking down at a chart. Blaine tried to hear what they were saying.

"Erratic behavior."

"Suffering from delusions."

"Hallucinating."

Blaine didn't understand what they were talking about; he was fine. All he needed was Kurt. His Kurt. The Kurt he loved.

"Kurt!" Blaine called out suddenly. All eyes turned to him as he struggled against his restraints. "Kurt! Kurt, where are you? Kurt, I'm here! I'm here, Kurt!" He threw his head back on the bed, causing a sharp pain to shoot up the back of his head. Cooper and the doctors turn to him, so he did it again. He would hurt himself, but he wouldn't care as long as it brought Kurt back to him. He kept banging his head, harder and harder each time.

There was shouting. Blaine realized they were shouting at him. To stop. But he wouldn't. Not without Kurt. When Blaine lifted his head again, Cooper rushed by his side and snaked his arm between Blaine and the bed. The two hospital attendants held him down firmly as one of the doctors run over.

Blaine felt the needle go into his arm before he saw it. A single word left his lips before he passed out.

"Kurt."
