This Wasn't a Breakup

Breakups involve two people growing apart and realizing that they just don't work out. A breakup says "hey, we're not as compatible as we used to be and therefore we should free each other from this relationship that is binding us together". Breakups include cliche lines like "it's not you, it's me" and millions of apologies and maybe a few tears shed, but they would both leave the relationship a little relieved.

This wasn't a breakup.

This wasn't a breakup; this was betrayal. Breakups don't have your boyfriend kissing some guy at a college party while you're supposed to be sick in your dorm room. Even though you decided to haul your ass out of bed to be there for your boyfriend, he still thought it would be a good idea to practically suck another man's face for half the night when he thought you were in bed, snuggled up in your navy blue pajamas and oversized cheetah print Snuggie.

For three weeks Blaine was too sick to even move. Laryngitis and the flu. He didn't even know his body could get that sick. It was like the universe was conspiring against him after he felt a tickle in the back of his throat, but didn't get it checked. He didn't have to get it checked. He's a singer. Singers take certain precautions to make sure they, and their voices, are in tip top shape. He just needed a little tea, some warm lemon juice, and honey. His roommate Lydia had made him a Filipino concoction which she stated in an exaggerated accent "It will work. Your sickness will disappear". He had laughed and gulped down the liquid, ignoring the sting of tears as his throat burned.

But the little tickle quickly became a sore throat and after extensively coughing into Kurt's mouth one day, Kurt had commanded Blaine to see the doctor. Turns out it was more than a little sore throat.

A few days later he was shivering and sweating in bed under the covers, cursing everyone he ever came in contact with for infecting him. Kurt had laughed and told him students get sick all the time. Blaine argued that he didn't. Kurt promised to take care of Blaine properly when he got back from his classes and gave Blaine a swift pat on the head, even though all Blaine really wanted now was a sweet kiss, before heading off.

The first week, Kurt was at his bedside every night playing the part of his doting nurse. They had roleplayed the whole nurse thing before and it had involved a little crossdressing, a few laughs, and a lot of sex. Blaine had grinned and asked Kurt where his nurse's outfit was this time. Kurt had gotten that familiar glint in his eye and he gave Blaine a small smile before sternly stating that he was not going to have sex with Blaine while he's sick.

Blaine had pouted, so Kurt took a chance and gave him a light kiss on the nose. Blaine was grateful that he had had the energy to wipe the dried snot from his nose earlier, so he could be less gross than he already was for Kurt.

The second week was exams week. Kurt tried to swing by every day but he couldn't stay long. Blaine was excused from all his exams because he literally could not muster up the energy to get out of bed. Everything hurt too much and he felt like his body was revolting against him. He just wanted Kurt there to kiss him and make everything better.

The third week Kurt only came once. He said something about meeting up with some friends and maybe going to a party or two over the weekend. Blaine kept drifting in and out of consciousness. He was exhausted and the medicine he had been given were not helping matters. He kept waking up tired and he hated the feeling. Usually he was an energetic ball of fun, but this stupid sickness had completely brought him down. He had caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror opposite his bed.

His eyes were puffy and rimmed with red with yellow crust on the corners. Watery light green snot was coming out of his nose and Blaine used the back of his hand to wipe it away before it reached his swollen lips. His hair was a disheveled mess. The left side stuck out awkwardly in all directions while the right side was matted to his head because he slept on that side. He didn't know how Kurt could stand to look at him.

"Honey," Kurt said. "Feel better, okay?" Blaine just blinked at him. Kurt gave him a small smile and said: "I love you." Blaine mumbled it back, or at least he thought he mumbled it back because the next thing he knew the light was off and Kurt was gone. If it wasn't for the smell of Kurt's cologne in the air (which was currently attacking Blaine's nostrils and made him sneeze every five seconds), Blaine would have thought he dreamt the whole thing.

On the Friday of the fourth week, Blaine got out of bed. He showered for as long as he could (as he was grateful Lydia let him) and put on his freshest clothes: a navy polo and light gray jeans. He was going out.

Specifically out to a party he had heard Lydia talking excitedly to her best friend on the phone about. She claimed everybody who is anybody would be there, so Blaine figured Kurt would be there too. He would surprise Kurt since Kurt hadn't come to visit him once during the week. Blaine guessed he was probably busy with schoolwork. It happened before and Blaine was sure it would happen again. Blaine laughed a little to himself as he fixed the collar of his shirt. He gave the room one last sweeping glance before he stepped out and made his way to the party.

Blaine didn't know what he expected to see. He hadn't gone to too many college parties. Usually Lydia was the one who went out every week to these things. Blaine used the opportunity to invite Kurt to his room, so they could have some alone time. Lydia would spent the night with whatever guy she hooked up with or with one of her friends if she deemed no one at the party was good enough for her, and Kurt and Blaine would spend the night together, just experiencing each other. Who needed parties when you had the man you loved right next to you?

Blaine certainly didn't expect to see that man drunkenly swaying with another man to the obnoxiously loud techno beat that pumped through speakers that were almost as tall as Blaine. They had both danced with other guys before. They had an unspoken agreement that it was fine because they only had eyes for each other. Whenever Kurt or Blaine would dance with someone else, they would catch each other's eyes from wherever they were. Paying no attention to the person they danced with, one would smirk to the other. A few winks and gestures and mouthed words and before either of them knew it, they would be fucking in the bathroom or someone's bedroom.

But this time Blaine didn't catch Kurt's eyes. Kurt's eyes were closed as he grinded against another man. The guy whispered something in his ear and Kurt giggled. Another whisper, another giggle. Blaine felt sick. Well, sicker than he already was. He was about to go to the bathroom to vomit when he saw the guy push Kurt to the wall and sloppily kissed him. Kurt tensed for a moment before relaxing and wrapping his arms around the other guy.

In a flash, Blaine wretched the guy off his boyfriend, not even caring that his 6-foot-2 athletic frame could easily pound Blaine into the ground. Kurt's eyes fluttered open.

"Blaine!" he gasped. His eyes were glassy and his cheeks were flushed, but the only thing Blaine noticed was how swollen his pink lips were. From kissing. Another man. Blaine ran out of the party with Kurt calling after him.

For the next few days Blaine didn't leave his dorm room. He told his teachers he was still sick, but honestly, he didn't care if they all failed him. He didn't care about school or work or life. He just wanted to stay curled up in his bed forever.

His phone hadn't stopped ringing since the day after the party. It was Blaine's fault, really. He had been the one to change his relationship status on Facebook to single. All 355 of his Facebook friends were witnesses to the end of his and Kurt's relationship.

Blaine felt like he was overreacting, but at the same time, he didn't. Kurt had cheated on him. Cheated. And from what he found out from Lydia's friend Thalia, this hadn't been the first time. When Kurt was at parties and he got drunk, he had gotten a bit wild. No one told Blaine because they felt like it wasn't their place to tell. It was Kurt's.

Kurt had tried to visit, but every time he did, Blaine would ignore his banging on the door and pleas for Blaine to hear him out. During one of the attempts to visit, Kurt told him through the door that Blaine was his first boyfriend, the only guy he had ever been with for a long time, but now Kurt doesn't feel like that fragile little bird he was in Lima anymore. People like him now. Guys actually hit on him. He doesn't know why he does things like get drunk at parties and make out with other men, but it made him feel good in a way that being with Blaine didn't. Blaine closed his eyes tight as he felt his eyes start to well up. He wouldn't cry over Kurt Hummel. He wouldn't.

Blaine wanted to get up and scream to Kurt that Kurt was his first boyfriend too, did he forget that? Yes, Blaine got attracted to other guys sometimes, but in his heart he knew Kurt was the only one for him. Blaine started getting angry. Kurt almost made it sound like he was the victim here, like Blaine was holding him back. Blaine was the one dragging him down. Well, Blaine won't drag him down any longer. Kurt let out an exasperated sigh and Blaine could hear his retreating footsteps as he moved from the door and walked away. Blaine opened his eyes and let the tears fall.

No, this wasn't a breakup. A breakup wouldn't hurt this much.
