“So kids, this story has nothing to do with how I met your father,” Dave began before getting cut off by his daughter.

“This is getting ridiculous. Can’t you just get to the point, already?” she whined.

“I was going to say, this is a good story and it might teach you something. It is about your uncles Kurt and Blaine,” explained Dave.

“Fine,” sighed his daughter.

“At least the ones about Uncles Kurt and Blaine have been funny so far,” added his son, who seemed resigned to their fate.

“It all began when Uncle Kurt forgot his lunch.”

____________

Kurt had been in a rush that morning. He had a big presentation for a photo shoot that would be featured in the September issue of Vogue. It was a big deal for Kurt because it was his first assignment as an assistant editor.

Unfortunately, Kurt had been in such a rush that he had forgotten his lunch. This would not have been a big deal normally, but Kurt was stressed about what his boss would think about his presentation.

“Blaine, it’s a sign that my presentation sucks. All day everything has gone wrong!” Kurt yelled into his phone.

He was not mad at his husband, just frustrated.

Blaine knew Kurt hadn’t been lying when he said his day was off to a bad start. When Kurt got up late, after missing his alarm, he had discovered that their water heater was broken. This in addition to lost keys, a botch coffee order, and a missed train, left Kurt feeling frazzled and defeated before he had even given his presentation.

“Calm down, Kurt. I already told you that your presentation is amazing and that your boss would be crazy if she turned it down,” Blaine reassured Kurt.

Normally, Kurt found Blaine eternal optimism and positive attitude to be endearing but today it was obnoxious. He was trying not to snap at Blaine and figured that getting off the phone would be a good idea.

“I have to go work on my presentation. I will call you when it is over,” Kurt said, trying not to sound annoyed.

He hung up the phone before Blaine could add anything.

A couple hours later, Kurt was being to feel hungry and knew he should eat something before his presentation at 2. He was just about to head down to his office building’s food court in search of something that passed off as food, when he heard a knock on his door.

“Come in,” he called, still not use to having his own office.

When the door opened, there was Blaine, with what Kurt hoped was food in his hand.

“Hey Kurt, I hope you don’t mind that I stopped by, but I had a free period and thought I would bring you something to eat and wish you luck.”

Kurt hated the cautious tone in Blaine’s voice and the fact that he was still waiting in the doorway.

He got up from his desk and pulled Blaine into his office, shutting the door behind him. Kurt pushed Blaine against the door, trapping him in-between his arms. He leaned in for a quick kiss.

Pulling away just as quickly he said, “I am happy you came by.”

Going back in for another kiss, Kurt could tell that Blaine was just catching up. Blaine was just beginning to participate in the kiss as Kurt pulled away again, dragging him towards his desk.

Kurt took the bag of food out of Blaine’s hand and set it down, leaning back against the desk, pulling Blaine to stand in between his legs.

“Thanks bringing lunch. I know you don’t like leaving your students during school hours.”

Blaine smiled down at Kurt, feeling more confident that he had made the right choice. Kurt had sounded annoyed with him on the phone.

Just as Blaine was leaning in for another kiss, there was another knock on the door and it quickly swung open.

“Mail’s here!”

Kurt and Blaine quickly pulled away as a petite blonde, pushing a mail cart barged in.

“Chandler!” Blaine stared in disbelief.

“Oh hello Blaine,” muttered the other man, suddenly becoming more reserved.

Blaine turned to demand an explanation from Kurt, just as Kurt turned to Chandler.

“Chandler, would be mind stepping outside for a second? Blaine and I need a moment.”

“Of course, Kurt. I will always wait for you,” Chandler chirped, before turning and swishing out the door.

“What the hell is he doing here, Kurt?” asked Blaine as soon as they were alone again.

“Babe, I told you he worked here. I don’t know why you are getting worked up over this.”

“No! No, you didn’t! I would have remembered if you had told me that you worked with Chandler.” Blaine was not letting this go. When it came to Kurt and Chandler, Blaine was still sensitive.

“First of all, we don’t work together. He works in the mail room. Secondly, yes I did. It was when you had just come home from that choir competition in San Francisco and we were driving home from the airport.” Kurt knew he had told Blaine. He had learned his lesson the first time around and never hid anything from Blaine when Chandler was involved.

Blaine was quiet for a second, trying to think back to that day.

“Oh,” Blaine looked down sheepishly.

“Do you remember?” asked Kurt.

“No, not really. All I remember from that car ride was you looking really good in those skinny jeans and wanting to get home faster so I could get them off you.”

Kurt looked shocked at what had come out of Blaine’s mouth then just burst out laughing.

“What?” Blaine said, blushing. “I had been gone for almost a week and I really missed you.”

When Kurt got control of his giggles, he looked into Blaine’s eyes and asked, “So we are ok?” He never wanted to upset Blaine.

“Yes, we are good. But, I don’t like how you have Chandler on the hook.”

“What? You are crazy. I don’t even know what you are talking about?” Kurt defended himself, trying to look innocent.

“Oh really? Then if he came back in here right now, you could tell him that nothing will ever happen between you two,” Blaine said, challenging his husband.

“He already knows that, but of course I could,” answered Kurt.

“Chandler! Would you come back in here?” called Blaine.

Kurt blanched, becoming even paler than he already is and gulped as Chandler came rushing in. Apparently he had been waiting right outside.

“Chandler, Kurt has something to tell you,” said Blaine as he pushed Kurt forward.

As Kurt stepped towards Chandler, the blonde looked up with big, hopeful eyes.

“Chandler, look I- I uh…” started Kurt

“Yes?” asked Chandler, looking as endearing as he possibly could.

“It’s just that, well you see, I just wanted you to know…” Kurt was clearly having trouble getting out what he wanted to say.

He looked at Chandler, who was clearly waiting with baited breath for what Kurt would say next, just like he had been since they had known each other. Kurt knew what had to do.

Taking a deep breath he started again, “Chandler you are one of the nicest people I know and I don’t want to upset you, but you have to know that I can’t be with you.”

“Right now!” blurted Blaine.

Kurt turned to see his husband giving Chandler the most encouraging look.

“I could get hit by a bus. I’m not going to be around forever,” he added.

Chandler looked a little confused, but smiled.

“Oh, okay. I will see you tomorrow Kurt,” he said with a wink before leaving the office.

“What was that about?” demanded Kurt as he turned on Blaine.

“It’s just that he looked so…I don’t know. I didn’t want to crush his spirit. He is really good at making puppy dog eyes,” Blaine tried to explain.

“I can’t believe you,” said Kurt with a smile. “You are such a dork.”

Blaine gave Kurt a big, cheesy grin before looking down at his watch.

“Shoot! My next class starts in twenty minutes and I should probably be there.”

“Probably,” agreed Kurt, begrudgingly.

“Enjoy lunch. I will see you at home.” Blaine added a quick kiss before he was out the door.

Kurt sat down and began to look through the food that Blaine had brought, his favorite sandwich from his favorite deli, when his door burst open again.

Exasperated from all the intrusion, he looked up to see Blaine’s face peaking around the door.

“What are you doing here?” Kurt asking, knowing Blaine was making himself late.

“I didn’t wish you good luck,” he answered like it was obvious.

“Oh. Okay.”

“Good luck,” Blaine said, literally giving him the thumbs up, and ducking out again.

Kurt couldn’t help but smile and feel a lot more relaxed and ready than he did that morning.

____________

“And that is why you should never keep someone on the hook,” concluded Dave.

“Dad, I don’t think that story really lent itself to that lesson,” said his daughter as she rolled her eyes.

“I know, but I still think it was a good story,” answered Dave, enjoying his captive audience.

Dave’s phone began to ring. He looked down to see that it was Kurt saying.

“Speak of the devil,” he said as he answered the phone, putting it on speaker.

“Hey Kurt. We were just talking about you.”

“Oh really? Nothing bad I hope,” laughed Kurt, his voice filling the small library.

“I was just telling the kids about the time Blaine found out that you were keeping Chandler on the hook,” explained Dave.

“Oh wow. I remember that day. When I got home that night, Blaine totally made me pay for it. It was so hot. I love making him jealous,” Kurt rambled, reminiscing.

Dave began fumbling with his phone, trying to hang up on Kurt before he said too much. His kids were not helping, giggling from their spot on the couch.

“He was so rough that night, I don’t think I could sit for a-

“And that is enough of that.” Dave said, finally figuring out his phone.

He looked up to see his kids pulling themselves together.

“So I think that story kind of got away from me, but now it’s time tell you about how I met your father.”
