In which Kurt meets Cooper.
Author's Notes: Unbetaed. Came to me this morning at work. Thanks to Heartmadeofbooks for the help with the title.
The first time Kurt talks to Blaine's older brother is right before he transfers back to McKinley. Kurt stops by Blaine's room to spend one last Saturday curled up together watching movies and he hears Blaine crying. He goes to open the door but then he hears someone telling Blaine it's all going to be all right. That he and Kurt will survive this. Kurt knocks and he hears the panic enter Blaine's voice. Like whoever he's on Skype with is someone he has to hide.
“Blainers answer the door. Kurt's going to find out about me eventually.”
“Coop....”
“Blainers, what is it? You're scared, why?”
“Josh.”
“Oh Blainers, Josh didn't stomp all over your heart because of me. He stomped all over your heart because he was an ass.”
“I know. Honest.”
“Good, Now go answer the door. I want to meet Kurt.”
“All right.” Blaine says defeatedly.
When Kurt comes in he's introduced to Cooper Anderson Blaine's older brother. Blaine's older brother who threatens to kick his ass if he breaks Blaine's heart. Blaine's older brother who he instantly adores because he only wants what's best for Blaine. He wants Blaine to be loved for everything he is. Blaine's older brother who he's pretty sure knows what Kurt hasn't told Blaine yet, that Kurt is madly in love with him.
The second time he talks to Cooper is the week after Blaine transfers. He gets a call from New York. He's at the Lima Bean waiting for Blaine to bring their coffee over.
“Hello?”
“Kurt, it's Cooper. Cooper Anderson, Blaine's brother.”
“I know who you are, Cooper. What can I do for you?”
“Protect him. Make sure you have his back. I do not want to get a phone call like the one I got after the Sadie Hawkin's Dance again. Do we understand each other?”
“He's going to be fine. I've got his back. I promise.”
“Good. I'll let you get back to whatever it was you were doing then.”
“Hey, who was that?” Blaine asks as Kurt hangs up.
“Cooper.”
“Oh no, what did he say?”
“Nothing. Just wanted to make sure you were going to be all right.”
“Kurt I'm sorry. He can be a bit overprotective.”
“Someone has to be. It's fine really. It's sweet. I completely understand.” Kurt leans over and kisses him.
The third time he talks to Cooper he's scared to death. He doesn't know how Cooper is going to react. He just knows he has to be the one to call him. He can't let his Dad do this for him. So he makes the call, his Dad right next to him ready to take the phone away.
“Cooper Anderson.” Blaine's brother says as he picks up the phone.
“Coo-per it's...”
“Kurt, hey, buddy what's wrong? Did something happen to Blaine?” Kurt just nodded into the phone, unable to say anything. He handed his phone to Burt unable to do this.
“Cooper, Burt Hummel. Kurt's dad.”
“Hi. What happened to Blaine?”
“Got slushied,”
“Wait, Blaine said Kurt always said they sucked but weren't enough to do any real damage.”
“Wasn't a regular slushy though we aren't sure what was in it.”
“Is Blaine all right?”
“He's in the hospital. It hit him in the eye. That's all I know right now.”
“Were my parents with him?”
“Your Mom was there. She said something about calling you once she knew more. But Kurt said something about having to do it because he broke a promise to you. Care to tell me what that's all about?”
“It was me being the protective older brother. I told him to protect Blaine. Can you put him on the phone?” Cooper hears ruffling then hears Kurt whisper his name.
“Kurt, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be so hard on you last time we talked. It's just Blaine's.... well I don't need to tell you how special he is. I just worry about him. I'm not around to protect him.”
“I'm sorry. I'll break...”
“NO you will not. You are going to keep right on loving him with everything you have just like you have been, probably from the day you met him. Kurt, just love him. That's all I need you to do, all right.”
“I can do that.”
“I know. Now give me the name of the bastard who did this. Who's ass do I get to kick?”
“He's a Warbler. His name is Sebastian Smythe. But don't worry about it. New Directions have got this.”
“All right. Warbler huh? Oh his life is about to get very difficult.”
“Cooper.”
“Hey, nobody messes with Blainers. Don't you laugh. He finds out you've laughed I'm never going to get to call him that again.”
“Okay. Okay. I'm sorry. Cooper I hate to cut this short but I've got to go. Your Mom just came down the hall.”
“Have her call me. And Kurt, give him a hug for me would you?”
“Sure thing.”
He talks to Cooper pretty regularly after the slushy incident. Blaine seems really happy about this. He seems to love the fact that Cooper and Kurt Skype each other without Blaine having to initiate it. Unbeknownst to Blaine he's been discussing his move to New York in the fall with Cooper. He's admitted things to Cooper he hasn't had the heart to admit to Blaine yet. About how he's afraid Blaine is going to call him half way through his first semester to tell him he's met someone else. Which Cooper has assured him won't happen. Or how he's afraid he's not going to make it. That he's going to let Blaine down. Cooper once again has assured Kurt that isn't going to happen. He's not so sure. And Cooper's been helping him find an apartment. If Kurt's honest with himself he's really glad he and Cooper get along so well. It's nice to have someone in Blaine's family like him. And it's really nice having someone in Blaine's family in their corner.
When he finally meets Cooper it's two months after the incident. Cooper comes home for a spur of the moment visit. Blaine is over the moon. Kurt doesn't think he's ever seen Blaine so happy. Kurt also loves that Cooper gives Finn hell for making Blaine's first few weeks as a member of New Directions difficult. And he has to laugh at all the girls being all moon eyed over him. Even Rachel finds him attractive. Which makes Finn's skin crawl, so it's a bonus.
They're at the Lima Bean that first day when Cooper and Kurt finally get a moment alone to talk. Blaine instinctively knowing they need a moment.
“You know, hearing you say you love my brother is one thing. Actually witnessing it for myself is quite another. You two have what it takes, Kurt. I have no doubt in my mind. There's going to be a day,,,, five years, maybe six, when Blaine's going to call me. He's going to tell me how he's bought you a ring. How he's going to take you to dinner at his favorite restaurant and he's going to propose. He's going to be all worried you'll say no. And he's going to think it's a surprise. But you're going to have called me days earlier, having found the ring in his dresser, or maybe his desk. You're going to be so excited. And you're going to tell me you're going to say yes.”
“Who says Kurt isn't going to propose to me first?”
“Blainers. It's not polite to eavesdrop you know.” At Kurt's chuckle Blaine glares.
“Cooper. Blainers was cute when I was five. Now it's just annoying. Do you mind?”
“Not at all Blainers.”
“Blainers, sweetie, give me my coffee and sit your sexy ass down.”
Cooper can only laugh at the blush that comes to Blaine's face. He knows actually watching them together that he's a bit off. It's going to be four years. Once Kurt has graduated. His parents are going to pitch a fit because Blaine still has another year of college. And Cooper's just going to throw money their way so they can have the wedding Kurt's always dreamed of.
