Kurt was cleaning the house when he heard crying, he knew exactly who it was so he put down the cloth he was holding and walked to the nursery. He pushed open the door and walked over to the crib where Elizabeth was crying, she was rolling around and her tiny hands holding her feet like all babies did. He leaned over the crib and put his hand in, stroking her cheek softly and looking into his child’s eyes, their eyes were near enough identical.
“Hey there little one. What’s wrong?” He said softly, as he picked her up and held her in his arms. He held her and rocked her gently but she wouldn’t stop crying. “What is it Elizabeth? You can’t be hungry because I fed you not that long ago. I winded you too. I bet its your diaper, it needs changing. Is that right?”
Kurt put her down on the changing mat and undone her diaper but saw there was no mess. “So it wasn’t your diaper that needed changing…” He said to her, putting a new clean one on. “God I wish your Papa was here, he’s so good with you and Andrew.” He said to himself quietly. He knew that Blaine couldn’t come home and help him again because he was at rehearsals. He knew that Blaine wouldn’t mind but Kurt just wanted to show that he could do it.
Elizabeth wouldn’t stop crying and the next thing Kurt knew was that he was being screamed for by someone else.
“Daddy!” The other person screamed, also crying. Kurt kept hold of Elizabeth and moved as fast as he could to his other child.
“Andrew, what happened?” Kurt asked, looking at his other child. He had a cut on his finger and saw a broken glass on the floor. “I told you, you’re not big enough for the big cup yet sweetie.”
“But I’m almost five. I’m almost bigger than Papa.” Andrew said between sobs.
“Anyone is almost or bigger than Papa.” Kurt said with a smile. Elizabeth was still crying and Andrew was crying and Kurt didn’t know what to do. He went into the living room and put Elizabeth in the playpen for a minute before going back into the kitchen to fix Andrew’s finger. In the emergency medical box in the cupboard, Kurt pulled out a kids band aid with cool patterns on it before kissing his finger softly. Andrew stopped crying and smiled at his Daddy.
“Thank you Daddy.” He kissed Kurt’s cheek and ran off, leaving Kurt to pick up the glass. He was wondering how he had managed to get the glass in the first place but he stopped wondering when he went back into the living room and saw Andrew climbing on the future. He was his fathers child for sure. “Andrew Elliot Hummel-Anderson, you stop climbing on the furniture immediately!” Andrew looked at Kurt sadly, like he knew that Kurt wasn’t happy and sat down on the couch, playing with his hands and kicking his feet.
Elizabeth was still crying. Kurt didn’t know what to do, he held her and did everything that he could think of to calm her down. Andrew got bored pretty easily, just like his Papa, and kept tugging at Kurt’s shirt while Kurt tried to calm down his daughter.
“What is it Andrew?”
“I’m bored!”
“Go find something to do then.”
“But I can’t thinked of anything.”
“Andrew darling, please? I’ll come and play when I’ve calmed down your sister.”
“Elizabeth be quiet!” Andrew said loudly which only made her cry more.
“Andrew!” Kurt said sternly, pointing towards the stairs. “To your room. Find something to do please.”
Andrew stuck his tongue out and stropped off upstairs. Kurt was so close to calling Blaine because he had no idea what was wrong with his daughter. She wasn’t like this with Blaine, well no child was like this with Blaine. Andrew was a breeze, especially with Blaine at home to take care of him. Andrew didn’t cry as a baby unless he needed something but Elizabeth cried all the time. How could he tell Blaine that he couldn’t do it? He was finding this so hard and now Andrew was crying and calling for Blaine because he had been told off by Kurt. Both of his children were crying and Kurt couldn’t do anything to stop it. He was so close to crying himself.
“Elizabeth sweetheart, please tell me what’s wrong? I can’t fix it if I don’t know.” He said picking her up again. He held her and rocked her and nothing was happening. The phone rang and it made Kurt jump and scared Elizabeth. He held his child with one arm and answered the phone with the other.
“Hello?”
“Hi baby!” It was Blaine. Crap.
“Hi sweetheart. Everything okay?”
“What was that angel? I couldn’t hear you over the baby, is everything okay there?”
Kurt never lied to Blaine and he wasn’t about to start now. “No. Andrew’s acting up out of boredom and he got into trouble and he’s upstairs screaming for you. Elizabeth won’t stop crying, I don’t know what’s wrong.” He said, almost crying himself.
“Baby, do you need me to come home?”
“I want you to but if you do then i’m not going to learn, am I?”
“I love you so much.”
“I love you so much too. I love these kids but I’m just not a very good dad. You never have this problem.”
Kurt didn’t know that Blaine knew what was wrong with Elizabeth and knew how to calm her. Every time that Kurt said that he wasn’t a very good dad, it made Blaine sad. He hated hearing Kurt talk about himself like that. He knew that Kurt was an amazing dad, he just needed to believe that he could do it.
“Oh sweetheart, you’re an amazing dad, the best dad these kids could ask for.” Blaine said lovingly.
“Then why won’t they stop crying? I can’t do this.” Kurt finally cracked and cried.
“Baby, listen to me. You can do this, you can. I believe in you and I know you can do this.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too. I’ll come home a few hours early with a coffee, bagel and my hands to give you a nice foot rub. I’ll even bath the kids and put them to bed.”
“I’ll make dinner.”
“I’ll see you in a few hours then beautiful. I miss you.”
“I miss you too.”
“I love you.”
“And I love you.”
Kurt put the phone down and looked at his crying child, having an idea which might settle both her and Andrew. He went upstairs to go and find his son but he wasn’t in his room which made Kurt panic. He sped to check the others rooms and eventually found him in his and Blaine’s bedroom, trying on Kurt’s clothes. “Oh darling, what are you doing in here?”
“I want to be like you and Papa.” Andrew said turning around in circles in front of the mirror before tripping on the long shirt and falling on his butt. He giggled and looked up at Kurt with the hat slanted over his eyes. It reminded him of the time that he had hidden from Blaine and that had happened to him, he had a jacket half over his face.
“And you are like your Papa and me. You’re very handsome, just like your Papa.” Kurt smiled and held out his hand to Andrew, leading him to the bed. He began singing and almost instantly Elizabeth stopped crying and Andrew was quiet and settled. By the time Kurt had finished five songs, both children had fallen asleep. Kurt went to the nursery and put Elizabeth to bed, tucking her in and kissing her head before going back to the bedroom and pulling the covers over Andrew.
A few hours later, Blaine came home to see Kurt lying on the couch, not asleep but just lying there.
“Hey gorgeous.” He said as he put his bag down and walked over to the couch, kissing Kurt before lifting his legs and sitting down. He took Kurt’s feet in his hands and began massaging. “You did it. They’re quiet or did you kill them?” He teased.
“No, they’re quiet. I ended up singing to them.” Kurt smiled proudly.
“I’m so proud of you.”
“Thank you.” Kurt smiled more.
After some foot rubbing, Blaine woke Andrew so they could have dinner and after he bathed him while Kurt fed Elizabeth. Blaine bathed Elizabeth right after before putting them both to bed. By the time he came back out to see Kurt, Kurt had fallen asleep on the couch which made Blaine smile. Blaine took Kurt in his arms and carried him to their bed, undressing him and pulling Kurt onto him so he was snuggled up to him while he slept.
