"I'm so glad you thought of this. I haven't been ice skating since I was like, seven."

Kurt timidly smiled at Blaine as they stepped out on the ice rink at Rockefeller Center. They had been sitting in his and Rachel's loft in silence for about an hour before Blaine suggested that they go do something.

He stumbled and almost slipped not two feet from the edge. Blaine reached out and grabbed his arm to steady him.

"Sorry," Kurt said, "I guess that's why I haven't been skating in so long."

"Its fine," Blaine said, giving a little chuckle, "I'll help you."

Blaine let his gloved hand rest on Kurt's arm as they skated slowly around the rink, still too cautious, Kurt assumed, to hold his hand. "Winter Wonderland" played softly as the bright glow from the Christmas tree shown above them. Kurt remembered the last time he had been ice skating.

It was when he was seven, as he had said. It was the winter before his mom had passed away. They were at his grandparents' for Christmas. There was a small pond near their house that Kurt could remember catching fireflies by in the summer time. In the winter, however, Kurt could always remember how his mother would take him there to ice skate. It wasn't very big, so they couldn't do anything fancy. Mostly, his mother would just take his hand and they would skate in circles around the pond.

That year, they were skating as usual. On about their fifth time around the pond, his mother slowly let go of his hand.

He panicked instantly. "Mommy! What are you doing?" he yelled.

His mother chuckled. "You're doing so good!"

He turned slowly to head back to his mother. "But I need you!"

"No, you don't, honey! Look how good you're doing on your own!"

Kurt looked down at his skates. He carefully took a stride with his left foot. Then with his right. Soon he was moving faster towards his mother. She stepped out of the way to let him go past.

"Mom! Look! I'm doing it!" he giggled happily, right before he slipped and fell back on his bottom.

"Oh honey, are you okay?" his mother quickly skated over and sat down in front of Kurt, looking him over to check that nothing was broken. "I'm sorry. Do you want me skate with you again? Or maybe we should just go back, I-"

"Mom! I'm fine! I just slipped," said Kurt quickly, to stop his mother's worrying. He struggled to get back up.

"Do you want to go back?" his mother asked him, smiling at the fact that he was okay.

"No! I wanna keep skating!"

His mother took his hand and pulled him up. They started to skate again.

"No, I wanna skate by myself!"

His mother tried to hold back a smile. "You sure, honey?"

"Yeah," he said, trying to wrestle his hand out of his mother's grip.

She laughed and carefully let go of his hand. She watched as he took little strides and made it once around the rink all by himself. She sat down by the edge of the pond to continue watching him. He skated a few more times around the rink before his father came down from the house and told them that dinner was ready.

Now as Kurt skated around the rink at Rockefeller Center, he realized how out of practice he was. When he was little, it had seemed more naturally to him. Now, it seemed that he had grown out of it. Luckily, he had Blaine to help guide him.

He looked over at Blaine, who was keeping his gaze in front of them as they skated, occasionally giving Kurt cautious smiles. Kurt smiled back and reached down to take Blaine's hand in his.

Blaine looked over at him, surprised. Kurt said nothing, but took another stride to help them go faster.

He really was lucky to have Blaine. They had come so far over the last couple days. But they still had a long way to go. They were skating on thin ice. Literally. They just needed to help each other along the way. Maybe this Christmas would be happy after all.
