Everyone was taught in school and by their parents how soulmates worked. They were taught that you were born with your soulmate's eye color and they were born with yours and when two soulmates eyes met for the first time a beautifully powerful experience would happen between them. Their irises would switch along with your soul mates name being etched into the inside of either your left or right palm.
They were also told horror stories over the years about how, on rare occasions, some people lost their soulmate before they got to meet and how the love of their lives eye color would disappear from their irises.
Although those stories always terrified Kurt Hummel, he never thought he would be a part of one.

Kurt and Burt were standing in the kitchen in comfortable silence making dinner.
Until Kurt dropped the spoon he was using to stir pasta sauce.
"Kurt? You alright?" Burt asked looking worried
"Yeah...I just got a killer migraine all of a sudden. Maybe I hit my head too hard when those neanderthals threw me in the dumpster."
Burt cringed "Let me see."
Kurt turned to his dad but Burt froze right as he saw his son's eyes.
"Dad? What's wrong?"
"Your eyes are just like your mothers..." Burt whispered.
"What are you talking about about? Mom's eyes weren't-" then it sunk in and Kurt darted to the bathroom.
As soon as he saw his reflection tears sprung to his eyes. Burt standing right behind him.
"No...NO! He doesn't get to die! We were suppose to sing duets and live in New York and get get married!" Kurt sobbed at the mirror.
"Kurt...Kurt it's okay..." Burt comforted his son, knowing it wasn't okay at all. He pulled Kurt into a tight hug.
"No it's not!" Kurt cried into his dad's shirt. "It's not okay at all! I'm a widower at 15 and I hadn't even met him yet!"
"Kurt look at me." Burt insisted, but he didn't continue his thought because what he saw in his son's eyes shocked him almost as much as seeing his late wife's irises in Kurt's eyes "Kurt look. Look in the mirror!"
Kurt probably would've refused, because he did not want to face the pain his reflection caused him, but Burt's tone made him turn towards the mirror and gasp.
Kurt saw the syrupy color he loved dearly swirl and drip and melt back into his irises, washing away the ocean color he remembers all too well.
"He...He's alive?" Kurt turned to his dad with tears in his eyes, but for a completely opposite reason now. "But- how?"
"I- I don't know." Burt said dumbfounded.
"We have to go find him!" Kurt said, starting to pace back and forth in the tiny bathroom. "He could be in trouble! I mean he died for a whole minute. Maybe he's in the hospital or-"
"Kurt calm down, maybe you sit-"
"Calm down!" Kurt shrieked "Dad, my soulmate died and came back to life, and you expect me to calm down?"
"Yes." Burt replied cooly "Just like you said, He's alive, it's going to be okay."
"How do you know that? What if he dies again, but for good?" Kurt asked weakly.
"I don't know, but-"
"Dad, can we please, please go check a few hospitals. I just have this really strong feeling something really bad happened. You know better than I do the instincts soul mates have about each other."
"Kurt, we don't even know his name, what he looks like. Hell, he could be in a whole other state, whole other country! How do you expect us to find him?"
"By the color of his eyes and my instincts." Kurt responded confidently "We can bring a picture of mom where you can see her eyes and besides it's more likely that he's in Ohio, because soulmates are usually born not too far away from each other."
"...Fine." Burt sighed, knowing how stubborn his son could be. "So, ‘he' huh?"
Kurt's eyes widened realizing what he'd been saying "Uh..."
"Kurt it's okay, I know. I've known since you were four." Burt chuckled and pulled his son into a hug
"Thanks Dad."

Kurt and Burt checked all three hospitals in the small town of Lima, Ohio. None of them having a boy with ocean colored eyes.
"Maybe my soul mate is an old man." Kurt grumbled on their way back to Burt's truck "Maybe we were born in different generations, like Bella and Edward."
"I doubt it, kid." Burt laughed as he climbed into the drivers seat. He turned the car on once they were both inside. "Maybe we should head back. It's getting kinda late."
"Can we try Westerville? For some reason it just keeps popping into my head, and that's a good sign right?" Kurt asked looking hopeful
"Yeah, yeah it is. Come on." Burt sighed
*****
Once they got to Westerville Kurt's right palm gave a sharp twang.
"Ow!" Kurt hissed, hold his hand.
"Kurt?" Burt asked warily.
"Dad...dad! He's here! He has to be!"
"Where though?"
"The hospital?"
"Okay, um let me think...there's Saint Anns Hospital?"
"No." Kurt wasn't exactly sure why he was so certain, he just...Knew.
"Westerville General Hospital?"
"No."
"Nationwide Children's Hospital?"
Kurt's palm stung "That's it! That's the one!"
Once they got to the hospital, they went straight to the nurses station. Burt held up the photo of Elizabeth's face to a kind and frazzled looking woman behind the desk.
"Hello my name's Burt, and this is my son Kurt. We were wondering if you could tell us if there is a boy admitted here with the same eye color and his heart stopped a couple of hours ago."
Kurt winced.
The woman looked shocked when she said, "I can only give out personal information to family, I'm sorry."
Before Burt could respond, Kurt piped up, "He's my soulmate."
The womans eyes seemed to soften, "Oh well that changes things... there was a boy who came into the emergency room a couple hours ago." She began, as she motioned them her to follow her. "He's my son's friend, Finn found him, actually."
"What do you mean found him?" Kurt asked worried.
"He and his date, who was another boy, were beat-up at their Sadie Hawkins dance and my son, Finn, found them. His date, Daniel, had a couple lacerations, but Blaine," Kurt's head snapped up at the name, his hand flaring up and he whispered, 'Blaine'. "is in critical condition."
Kurt felt dizzy with all the new information he had gotten in the past minute, Blaine, critical condition, beat-up. He realized they stopped walking.
"This is room." The kind nurse said. "I'm Carole, by the way."
"C- can I go in by myself?" Kurt asked. His hand flaring up and his veins pumping pure electric joy and adrenaline.
"Of course." Carole replied softly.
Kurt reached for the door knob, pulled the door open, and stepped inside. The small boy he saw in the bed was staring dejectedly at the wall, he was the most breathtaking person Kurt had ever seen. He stepped closer to the bed and breathed one word.
"Hi."
The boy's head snapped to where Kurt was standing.
Their eyes met.
Kurt wouldn't be be able to look away from Blaine's eyes even if there was a wrecking ball destroying the building. What he saw was the most brilliantly beautiful thing he had ever witnessed. Blaine's seafoam irises were swirling and dancing with that honey-tea-whiskey mixture that had been set in his eyes for 15 years. It felt like he and Blaine were dancing and holding each other and kissing. Like they were both wrapped I a blanket of love and bliss. It felt like he was giving a piece of himself to Blaine and getting something in return. He could see for the first time in his life. Their souls braided and married, Kurt felt completely content and he could sense Blaine felt the same. The last dregs of blue-gray dripped out of Blaine's eyes leaving them both breathless.
Blaine looked dazed, "I'm Blaine."
Kurt let out a teary giggle unable to keep his joy from bubbling over.
"Kurt."
