First Valentine's Day as a couple for Kurt and Blaine, but Blaine is off filming for a TV show. Can Kurt survive this painful day without Blaine?
"Bring Bring! "
Kurt opened his sleepy eyes to his piercing phone alarm. He picked it up to turn it off, glancing at the date. He froze. February 14th. Valentine’s Day. Or what it had been for him for his whole life, Single’s Awareness Day. He sighed. The first year he had a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day, and Blaine was off in Florida. He dragged himself to the bathroom to moisturize. Even when he moped, he had to look nice.
After getting ready, Kurt pulled himself down the stairs. He saw his dad and Carol hugging. “Oh boy” he thought, “the love starts here.” Suddenly, he spotted something on his plate. He rushed to it and found a single cupcake with the letter I frosted on it. He looked from Burt to Carol to Finn; no one seemed surprised in the slightest. Kurt took out his phone again. No messages. The only thing that stood out was the small red heart by the date. Putting his phone away, Kurt couldn’t help but sigh. It was Valentine’s Day and Blaine didn’t even test him. Kurt sat down, not eating, only pushing his food around on his plate. As soon as Finn stood up to leave, Kurt was out the door, holding the cupcake delicately. Maybe Rachel could help him figure out what it meant.
They arrived at school, and Kurt immediately felt sick to his stomach. Even outside the building, couples were snuggling and holding hands. Kurt’s mind went to Blaine. Still no text. Kurt walked to his locker, completely disconnected from everything. He opened his locker and saw another cupcake with the letter L frosted on it in pink. Bewildered, Kurt placed the I next to the L and closed his locker gently. He wanted to find Rachel but the warning bell rang. Exasperated, he went to his first class.
He walked in the door to see Tina and Mike grinning widely at each other and snuggling. Kurt breathed deeply to stop from crying and turned to his desk. His eyes opened wide in a mix of surprise and protest. On his desk lay a third beautifully frosted cupcake with a heart made of chocolates placed ever so carefully on the top. Glancing around the classroom, he saw Tina and Mike smiling at him. Once he caught their eyes, they looked away, but kept whispering.
Kurt spent the period doodling hearts all over his notes. When the bell rang, he packed up his stuff slowly, unwilling to back into the hallways filled with love for others. He got up and walked out of the classroom with his head down until he reached his next class. He spotted Rachel in the seat next to his.
“RACHEL.” He shouted over the hustle and bustle of the hallways. She looked up to see Kurt running towards her. Quite quickly, she smiled mischievously and looked down again. Kurt reached her, breathless.
“I have to ask you something.” Kurt panted. Rachel didn’t reply; she was shifting her gaze from Kurt to his desk every 2 seconds.
“What?” Kurt asked, sidetracked. Rachel turned back to Finn. As Kurt opened his mouth to protest, the class bell rang. Exasperated, he sat down. It was a few seconds before he noticed the little mound on his desk. He picked it up and examined it. This cupcake had a V frosted in red on it.
Kurt looked up to Rachel who had her face buried in her book. This class went slower.
In the middle, he went to use the bathroom, still wondering how long this cupcake madness was going to go on. On the way there, he checked his phone again. No new messages. He contemplated calling Blaine but decided against it, since Blaine was filming a pilot episode for a TV show. When Kurt returned, his eyes widened again, wondering how this was possible. A fifth cupcake was sitting next to the fourth. This one had a white E frosted perfectly on top on it. This time he glanced at Santana who had broken out into a fit of giggles with Brittany.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, with no more cupcakes. That is, until he walked into the choir room. On his chair sat not one, but two more chocolate cupcakes, frosted with a Y and an O. This time, Kurt could not suppress a smile. He knew something was going on, but couldn’t figure out what. His heart was racing, and Glee practice went by the fastest it had ever gone. Carrying the two cupcakes, he ran to his locker. He placed them all next to each other. He picked up his backpack, and the emergency box he always had in his locker. He carefully placed the seven cupcakes side by side. He rushed outside to his car. He opened it and smiled when he saw a single cupcake on the dashboard with the letter U frosted on it. He put it in the box, and drove home, humming all the way.
Kurt thought about how this time last year, he was with Blaine at Dalton, and how Blaine said he didn’t know what he was doing in romance. He laughed, shaking his head and singing along to the music.
He was pulling into his driveway when he realized something. He parked abruptly, opening the box again. He rearranged the cupcakes into the order he received them. After some thought, he pulled away and looked down at it, tears threatening to spill over his eyes. His hand was over his mouth, and tears were rolling down his face. Kurt wiped them away, gazing down at the cupcakes that spelled the most amazing thing.
I LOVE YOU (with a heart-shaped O)
Kurt took a deep breath and got out of the car, feeling much better then he was feeling in the morning. He held the cupcakes carefully and opened the door, eager to show his dad.
“Dad! I have to show you something!” Kurt called. He heard a noise upstairs, from his room. Kurt walked up the stairs, still holding the cupcakes. He pushed his door open.
“Dad look at-“ he stopped short. It wasn’t his dad on his bed.
“Hey Kurt.” Blaine said, smiling at Kurt’s open mouth, taking the cupcakes out of Kurt’s arms and placing them on his dresser, freeing up his arms to pull Kurt into a hug, “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
End Notes: Hope you enjoyed. :)
