Kurt got home around 11:30. Burt and Carole had agreed to let him stay out late even though it was a school night. He was exhausted. He’d had an emotionally trying evening, from that heart-dropping moment when David removed the gorilla head to his immense excitement of finally seeing Blaine again, both eyes fully functioning, and having the best Valentine’s night in his entire life. Not to mention his physical fatigue-he’d been dancing for hours.

He got up to his room and closed the door behind him, leaning up against it and closing his eyes. If only he and Blaine could have spent the night together. Kurt found it hardly fair that Finn and Rachel were allowed to and he wasn’t. Then again, he and Blaine weren’t preposterously suggesting they get married(not that it was legal in Ohio, but still).

He opened his eyes and tried not to think longingly of what he and Blaine could do with a night to themselves. Once his eyes were open, however, he could quite clearly see his dresser, which was lined with propped-up notes from his secret admirer. He sighed, a slight pang in his chest. He walked over to the dresser and collected all the cards, holding them as though they were very fragile. He looked at them and considered his options. They were so sweet, he didn’t think he could stand to throw them away, regardless of the conflicted feelings he had about their origins(he was so proud of David, and so scared for him being unwillingly outed, but still Kurt could feel the ghosts of bruises on his back from combination locks, the raw terror and hurt when David had kissed him in that locker room). He’d told Blaine about Karofsky’s notes and confession in a corner booth at Breadstix while Santana and Brittany had performed a rendition of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. Blaine had listened sympathetically, squeezing Kurt’s hand across the table, and finally coming around to hold him and whisper comforting words.

Kurt stared at the cards in his hands, then stacked them and put them in a desk drawer, hidden away until he could decide what to do with them. He knew Blaine would understand.

Kurt went into his bathroom to start his nightly skincare regimen. When he finished he was ready to change into pajamas and crash, but he noticed his phone lighting up on his bed. Picking it up, he saw he had a text from Blaine.

Open the drawer in your bedside table, it said.

Perplexed, Kurt walked over to his nightstand and opened the drawer. There, right between his night mask and a bottle of lotion, was a box of conversation heart candies with a red bow tied around it.

Smiling, Kurt picked it up and closed the drawer. He sat on his bed and untied the bow, wondering how Blaine had gotten it into his room. He opened the box and picked one out. Laying it on his palm, he read the words printed on it.

U MOVE ME

Kurt gasped. Quickly, he poured several into his hand and began reading them. I <3 U, HARRY + SALLY, COURAGE, O THERE U R, BLACKBIRD, KURT + BLAINE.

Kurt reached for his cell phone and called Blaine(on speed dial, right after his home phone number).

“Hi,” Blaine answered with a smile in his voice.

“How’d you make these?”

Blaine chuckled. “So you found the candy. Do you like them?”

“I love them!” Kurt exclaimed. “I can’t possibly eat these, they’re too wonderful! How’d you make them?”

“I found a website that lets you customize them.”

“When did you put them in here?” Kurt asked.

“I stopped by your house before I got to the party,” Blaine said.

“I love you,” Kurt told him.

“I love you too,” Blaine answered.

Kurt sighed. “I should go to bed. I need beauty sleep.”

“No, you don’t. You’re plenty beautiful.”

Kurt laughed. “I’ll see you in the morning, Blaine.”

“Goodnight, Valentine.”

Kurt hung up and finished getting ready for bed, setting the box of conversation hearts next to his alarm clock. He turned out the lights and got into bed.

Best. Valentine’s day. Ever.”
