Author's Notes: Just something short and angsty because I needed to get my feels out!
"So… are you hungry?" Kurt asks awkwardly as Blaine perches on the end of his bed.
There's a thick tension in the air, has been for a while really, though neither of them will admit it. Blaine thinks back to a month or two ago, how if they had the house to themselves they definitely wouldn't be talking right now, would have needs far more urgent and demanding than hunger. He wants to grab Kurt, pull him closer and give in to what his body has been dreaming about for so long now, but he pushes away the urge. You won't be able to have this in a few months' time, he reminds himself bitterly. You need to learn to deal with it.
"Sure," he says, tries to smile, and Kurt hurries out of the room muttering something about a cheese board.
Blaine puts his head in his hands, takes a deep breath. He knows Kurt, knows himself. They've hit a bump in their relationship, no doubt about it, and there's going to be an argument soon, he can feel it.
Kurt's not an idiot; he knows Blaine's been distancing himself. He seems to be dealing with it okay, aside from his frostiness, and Blaine feels guilty for being relieved that Kurt hasn't done anything in retaliation. Not that he would, but it's still kind of nice to know.
He starts planning how he's going to fix this – maybe he doesn't have to be completely dependent on Kurt; he can get closer again but not too close, fix their relationship without breaking himself. Because he'd rather have a relationship with Kurt for as long as he can, deal with New York later as long as they're okay.
He's just figuring out a speech in his head when Kurt's phone buzzes. He looks up instinctively and sees an unfamiliar name: Chandler.
He's never heard of a Chandler before.
He feels uneasy but pushes it aside; he's not the type of person to read his boyfriend's text messages.
The phone buzzes again, and again, and by the fourth time he snatches the phone up. Is he the type?
All four texts are from this Chandler guy, and he finds himself unlocking it before he can stop himself. What he sees makes his breath hitch.
Can you sing into my voicemail? I wanna make your voice my ringtone.
Suddenly the room is spinning slightly and Blaine has to take a few deep breaths. What the hell is all this? He panics, trying desperately to find some innocence in it. Maybe it's someone like Wayde, maybe he's just a fan of Kurt. He scrolls up and stops at a random part.
Are you an astronaut? Because your smile is out of this world.
If this were someone else, someone he knew, in a different context, Blaine might have laughed. But then the phone buzzed again and the next message felt like a knife through his heart.
When we go to New York let's go to the front of the Plaza and re-enact the end of The Way We Were.
His eyes sting and there's a lump in his throat. He's been worrying over how they were going to manage being in different states while Kurt's been finding his replacement.
You always zig when I think you're about to zag.
He's never good enough, and so when Kurt says "you have no idea how hard it is being your boyfriend", it kills Blaine.
Kurt said he'd never say goodbye to him.
So then what's this?
