“Robert? Are you here?” Kurt called from the top of the metal staircase. He squinted his brilliant blue and green eyes, trying to peer into the darkness, but to no avail. “Robert, it’s me, Kurt. Department 14. 18 years of age…” The brown haired boy blindly reached out for a light switch with both his pale hands, stumbling down the small fleet of stairs as he tried to take another step.
Kurt yelled out loudly as he just barely caught himself on the staircase’s railing before his face had come into contact with the basement’s floor. Kurt closed his eyes as he gave a large breath of relief as he stood up straight, brushing off his clothes as he did so. He placed his hands back on the wall, in search of the light source.
“Ah ha!” Kurt exclaimed when he found the switch. He flipped it on, watching as the lights that were dangling down from the ceiling slowly turned on one by one.
“Are you in?” Kurt tried again as he looked around at the many manikins, boxes of clothes, and hangers that were lying askew. Kurt had never really been down in the basement much. Only when his boss had instructed to do so if he needed an extra hand around the department store had he done so.
Kurt sighed as he walked down towards the end of the room. “Hello?” He eyed the manikins suspiciously as he passed by each one of them, not really liking the way that they stared off into the distance.
Kurt had reached the end of the room when he decided to just give up on his hunt for Robert, who was the manager of the store that Kurt was standing under. He turned around on his heel, and took a step forward. But Kurt’s eyes went wild as he saw a lone manikin come walking toward him lethargically with his hands waving madly. Kurt swallowed, not really knowing what to think of the scene before him.
“Ok… Funny joke. I’ve got it.” Kurt backed up against the wall as the manikin took another step forward. “Alright. You can quit it now. You’ve got me scarred…”
But the manikin ignored Kurt, and turned his head to the left. Kurt snapped his head over to where the manikin was looking, and saw that two other manikins had begun to come to life. “Oh my gosh…” Kurt licked his lips as he looked around the room, noticing that more and more display toys had started to walk and twitch.
Kurt felt something grip his hand hard, making his blood run cold. But Kurt looked over in his surprise, to find a man about his own age was holding his hand. A beautiful, wondrous, stunning man, with a smile on his face that could bright up anyone’s day. He had curly dark hair, and the most amazing hazel eyes, along with an adorable height range. “Run!” The man said at once.
Kurt opened his mouth to speak, but was cut short as the unknown man raced the both of them towards a door that was to their right.
The man took out a glowing pen, and pressed it against the door, scanning it over the metal.
“Fantastic!” The man yelled out in excitement as the door swung open. He ran Kurt inside of the door, towards a large elevator that was near the far end of the room that they had just entered.
Kurt looked back behind them to see that a whole army of manikins were chasing after them.
“Oh bloody hell…”
The man pressed the only button that was on the elevator, and waiting as he placed the pen back into his coat pocket. Kurt watched as the manikins came dangerously close to the two men.
“HURRY UP.” Kurt screeched.
“Ah! Here we go.” The man said as the elevator made a soft dinging noise.
“Nehhhh.” Kurt yelled as he leaped into the elevator, followed by the doctor. Kurt slammed his hand down on the lone button.
The doors quickly closed just as the figures had reached the door. Kurt held his head as he slowly slouched down the cold, hard walls. But something just occurred to him. This man had just saved his life.
“Who are you?” Kurt asked at once, starring up at the strange man.
“I’m The Doctor.” He said as he offered a soft hand to Kurt. Kurt accepted it, helping himself up as the doors of the elevator opened once more.
“Just The Doctor?” Kurt asked as he walked with the man down the long hallway that they were dropped off at.
“Just The Doctor.” He replied cheerfully.
“Is that supposed to sound impressive?” Kurt asked, chuckling.
“Nope!”
The Doctor led them around a corner, but stopped and smiled when he noticed another group of manikins.
“Oops…” He muttered as he scratched his head.
Kurt looked around desperately as he watched The Doctor fiddle with his flowing pen once again.
“Ugh, here.” Kurt yelled as he picked up and empty trashcan and hurdled it toward the display bodies that were racing towards them.
“Fantastic!” The Doctor said as he watched as the bodies fell to the ground, tripping over each other as the garbage can rolled away.
Kurt raced over to the window that was at the end of the hallway, and pried it open.
“Come on, then!” Kurt called back at The Doctor.
“Oh no no no no no. You go. I have some business to take care of.” The Doctor waved around a large hunk of beeping metal. The Doctor ran towards the manikins, but came back just as quickly.
“What was your name again?” He asked.
“Kurt.”
“Nice to meet you, Kurt. Run for your life!” The Doctor raced off again.
Kurt was frozen there, not believing what had just happened. But he snapped back into reality as he jumped down from the window, landing on a platform just outside. He raced down the small ladder that was helpfully right there, careful not to take a wrong step. Kurt glanced down at the ground before him. It was a good 12 feet away from where he was standing, and there were no other platforms for him to jump onto.
Kurt swallowed as he closed his eyes, taking in a deep, shuttery breath. Kurt forced his eyes back open, turned around, and jumped off of the latter just in time before the top of the building exploded with a resounding ‘BOOM’. Kurt screamed as he was catapulted through the air, landing on a soft patch of grass in front of the entrance doors of his work.
Kurt clutched his side as he quickly stood up, racing over to the other side of the street, making his way towards his home, pacing a rather peculiar blue Police Call Public Box.
