Echo

AU where Blaine and Kurt get into a car crash and Blaine recalls the incident. Inspired by the song and contains lyrics to "Echo" by Jason Walker. Best read if listening to the song at the same time so you can get the whole atmosphere thing.

Hello, hello
anybody out there?
‘cause I don’t hear a sound
alone, alone
I don’t really know where the world is but I miss it now

Blaine beat the punching bag strongly, feeling the sweat trickle down his neck. He could still hear Kurt’s whispered “I love you” before he closed his eyes and drifted off into paradise.

The only thing Blaine could think about was how it was his fault, all his fucking fault. If they hadn’t gone out for dinner that one night, this wouldn’t have happened. If Blaine hadn’t suggested they order dessert, they would’ve gotten home safely. If Kurt hadn’t stayed to talk to a friend who was sitting in the opposite table, they would’ve missed the car completely out of control and surging towards them.

The roads were slick due to the heavy rain and the sky was dark. Kurt and Blaine had been singing along to a song on the radio, “The One That Got Away” by Katy Perry. They took turns singing the lyrics and Kurt was laughing at Blaine’s fake heartbroken interpretation of the song. Neither of them noticed the car skidding out of control on their left.

“Never planned that one day, I’d be losing you,” Blaine had crooned, causing Kurt to giggle helplessly. Suddenly Blaine noticed the headlights of the car streaking towards them in the rearview mirror and stopped singing. Kurt noticed and followed Blaine’s line of sight to see the car rushing towards them.

They both looked at each other at the same moment, their eyes full of fear. The song continued playing on the radio.

“Blaine, I love you…” Kurt was cut off as the impact thrust them forward in their seats. Blaine’s car was sent tumbling down the highway and all Blaine could do was close his eyes.

I'm out on the edge and I'm screaming my name
like a fool at the top of my lungs
Sometimes when I close my eyes I pretend I'm alright
but it's never enough

Blaine woke in a hospital, the fluorescent lights blinding. He tried to sit up but instantly lay back down as a sharp pain struck his stomach.

“Sweetie, you’re up,” he heard his mother say. He turned to see her sitting beside him, her eyes tired and her hair swept up in a messy bun.

“Kurt…where’s Kurt?”

“Blaine, let’s not worry about him now. What matters is that you’re safe.”

Blaine frowned at his mother’s reply, “Where is he? Is he okay?”

“Honey…”

“Tell me what happened to him!” Blaine demanded, fear running through his veins. He felt his chest tighten.

“Kurt, he...didn’t make it,” Blaine’s mother stuttered, looking down at her hands.

Blaine inhaled sharply. His thoughts became a jumble of words and he felt his entire body turn stiff. He licked his lips and asked in a surprisingly calm tone, “So, Kurt’s dead?”

“Blaine, I’m so sorry. I know he meant a lot to you. But at least you’re safe and that’s the most important thing…”

“…The most important thing? Mom, my boyfriend is dead because of me and you don’t even give a shit.”

“No sweetie, I do care…”

“I’m not stupid. I know you never approved of me being gay, let alone having a boyfriend. But Kurt is the most beautiful, most loving person I have ever met and he’s been there for me when you weren’t. Now he’s fucking dead and it’s because of me.”

“It’s not your fault,” Blaine’s mother tried to say.

“Yes, it is. I was the one driving and I should’ve kept my eyes on the road. Now he’s dead and oh my god it’s just all my fault,” Blaine sobbed, feeling his eyes fill with tears.

‘Cause my echo, echo
is the only voice coming back
--

Blaine remembered standing beside Kurt’s bed, gripping his hand tightly. His heart broke at how peaceful and serene Kurt’s face was, as if he was merely sleeping. Blaine fell to his knees, still holding onto Kurt’s hand, his tears falling on the bed.

“Kurt, I’m so sorry. Kurt, please don’t die. I love you, I love you so much. You’re so fucking beautiful Kurt, you can’t die. You’re so strong and incredible and I need you. I need you Kurt. Please don’t go,” Blaine whispered.

But Kurt’s eyes didn’t open.

My shadow, shadow
is the only friend that I have
--

At the funeral, Blaine stood near the back of the sea of black, his eyes on the floor. The words spoken became soft echoes in the distant. His eyes were dry for all his tears had been shed and his hands were trembling.

All he could think of was the car ride and Kurt’s voice and his laugh, the glare of the headlights and Kurt’s fear filled eyes and his whispered last words.

“I love you too,” Blaine said but nobody heard.

Nobody was there.
