After Kurt and Blaine left the party, they went directly to the park. It was dark, but the moon light was beautiful to be watched. They walked side by side in the middle of the park. As much Blaine thought Kurt was just enjoying the silent moment, Kurt had realized that something was wrong by the time that Blaine started singing “Teenage Dream” to him on the pub.
The minutes were passing and Kurt was becoming tenser. Blaine wasn’t saying anything, and he could feel that his boyfriend wasn’t okay. Kurt could feel that something was very wrong, but he couldn’t talk. He was divided in two parts: one was dying to know what Blaine wanted to say, but the other was afraid of knowing. But he couldn’t wait any longer. He had to know. So, Kurt stopped at the middle of the park, and Blaine walked more two steps, before he realized that Kurt had stopped. Maybe if he was holding my hand, Kurt thought, like usual, he would know.
“Blaine, what’s up?” he asked, not really wanting an answer. But he needed to know. He had to protect Blaine, and if something was bothering the teen, he had to know. Blaine just looked curiously to him, before frozen on the place. “W-what do you mean, Kurt? I’ve told you everything when I got here!” Blaine laughed forcedly. He had thought about this moment a lot of times, with a lot of different ends, and none of them was good. And now, the time had come, and he wasn’t sure he could do it. It was harder that he thought. Looking to Kurt, his perfect form, he’s worried blue-green-grey eyes looking carefully at him, it was hard. Because it remembered him of his worst end of this moment: Kurt crying, looking at him, and then at the ground, just to start sobbing and let his body fall down to the ground, to be hugged by his own arms, there, in the middle of the park.
Blaine tried to swallow the lump on his throat, shaking his head and looking again at Kurt’s perfect eyes. Those eyes, that brought so much happiness and love to his life. Those eyes that, on that moment, were full with worry and care. Blaine couldn’t. He wouldn’t have the guts to do it. He loved that boy too much. But then, he realized that Kurt was talking to him again, and he started paying attention. “Blaine, you can’t fool me. I know that there is something wrong since you sung “Teenage Dream” for me. Don’t pretend there’s nothing wrong!” Kurt almost yelled. Now Blaine was lying to him, and nothing could hurt more. Truthfully, he had no idea if Blaine was lying to him, but he was feeling something so hurtful on his chest. Like as if someone was ripping his heart in two pieces. “Please, just tell me. I’m sure that we can find a way to pass through anything you want to tell me. Please” Kurt said that with so much care that Blaine felt disgust of himself for going to do that to that kind, pretty, awesome boy in front of him.
Kurt reached out to take Blaine’s hand on his, but Blaine took his hand away from Kurt’s, making the taller man wide his eyes and pull his hand back to his side. Blaine sighed when he realized what he had done, but now it was too late. He had to do it, for Kurt, for him. For me…he thought. He knew that he would cry every night till his sleep, but he knew it was for the best. Kurt would be free to be with anyone he wanted. “Kurt, I think this is not working” he whispered, trying to not break right there and then. “What are you talking about, Blaine?” Kurt said, but he already knew. He knew what Blaine was talking about. But maybe it wasn’t true. Maybe it was something else. Maybe… “We aren’t working, Kurt. I think we need to stop this. Our relationship” Blaine said, louder. He didn’t look up, though. Because if he did, he knew he was going to break down, and he couldn’t. He needed to be strong for Kurt. But when he didn’t receive an answer, he had to look to his ex-lover.
Kurt had tears on his eyes and his expression was devastated, but no single tear left his eyes. He looked at Blaine like he was waiting that it was just a stupid game or a dare, but it wasn’t, and Kurt knew it. Blaine sighed and looked at his feet, catching breath, before he looked at Kurt again and whisper a silent “I’m sorry” to the boy in front of him. Kurt looked for him some more seconds, before the first tear left his right eye and fall on the ground. He didn’t let anymore tears get out, though. He looked down and lifted his hand were their promise ring linger, looked at it for some seconds, and took it off his finger, giving a watery smile, and handing it on Blaine’s direction. Blaine looked at the ring and then to Kurt, who still had a smile on the face, even though anyone could see that what he really wanted was cry.
“W-why? Why are you g-giving me this? It’s yours!” Blaine said, not believing on his own words. It wasn’t Kurt’s since seconds ago, when he said that they were done. And Kurt realized that first. “It isn’t mine as long as I’m yours. In the second that you decided that we couldn’t be together anymore, even if it was weeks ago, it stopped belonging to me. Now, he is yours to give to anyone you want” Kurt didn’t let his smile fade one second, but Blaine knew that, inside, the man in front of him was a broken mess, and that he was going to break on the second that Blaine was gone. He knew Kurt very well. Kurt took his hand, opened it and placed the ring on his palm, closing his fingers around it before taking a small step behind.
“Kurt, stop being so strong. Stop hurting yourself. Don’t pretend that everything is okay!” Blaine was mad now, even though who had the right to be mad was Kurt. But he couldn’t stand the fact that Kurt was smiling at him. He just couldn’t. “Blaine, look, I had being prepared for this moment since you kissed me at Dalton’s Academy’s choir room. I am just a little surprised that it didn’t happened sooner” now Blaine was confused. What the hell Kurt was talking about? “I don’t understand. What are you talking about, Kurt?”
“Blaine, since we started dating, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. After all, you was the hot-almost-straight teen of the relationship. I was just the stupid little new gay poor guy of the big Dalton’s Academy, where every rich boy had a chance. You could find any kid much cooler, prettier, hotter, smarter and richer than me on that school. But even there you chose me. But I knew that you would find someone, one day, that would make your head spin of happiness and love and care, and that you would let me behind. I knew that, I just didn’t want to believe on that. Then, you found Sebastian and I got crazy, because I thought you would abandon me and be with him forever and ever, but then we had our first time and I forgot about the fact that there were a lot of better choices that you had in front of you. That was until I realized the stupidity I’ve made with Chandler. On that day, I really thought you would break up with me, but you didn’t, and you confessed me all your fears. But now, after what you said, all I can think is that I already knew that this would happen, I just wasn’t expecting it now. But no doubt it would. You’re too good for me Blaine, and I can’t hold you on something when I know you deserve better. I love you too much for that” Kurt finished with a little smile. Blaine had tears in his eyes. Kurt thought that all over those almost two years of love? He thought Blaine was too good for him?
Tears started falling down of Blaine’s eyes. He couldn’t let Kurt think that. Kurt was too good for him. Kurt just wanted his happiness and Blaine was breaking everything. Destroying every little thing they had done together. He couldn’t. He froze when he felt someone cleaning his tears, and his eyes opened in shock. Kurt still had his smile on the face, but now it looked like a hurt smile. Something that broke Blaine’s heart a little more. Kurt cleaned his face with his thumb and stopped it over Blaine’s bottom lip, looking at it carefully, before petting it with his thumb before leaning on Blaine’s direction and whispering in his ear: “Just don’t forget that, anywhere you go, with anyone you are, you will always own this” Kurt placed Blaine’s hand over his heart, and kissed his earlobe lightly, before placing a last peck on the corner of Blaine’s mouth and squeezing his hand one last time, and before Blaine could do anything, Kurt was gone, and Blaine was alone in the middle of the park, his heart racing on his chest, and his hand tightly holding the promise ring.
