Blaine clears his throat for the third time, adjusting his glasses once more. Kurt Hummel smiles indulgently at him from across the elegant coffee table, the former model casually sprawled across his couch - but not in a sloppy way. Blaine doesn't think that anything Kurt does could possibly be as mediocre as sloppy.
Get yourself together, Anderson, he chides himself. He flips open his notepad and offers Kurt a smile, his insides shivering as Kurt returns it.
"So, Mr Hummel. We've all had the pleasure of seeing you on the runway for... five years, has it been?" Kurt arches an eyebrow coolly, and Blaine swallows.
"Six. I'd check your facts before you come, Mr Anderson." Blaine stutters out a breath, confused at the icy hostility radiating from Kurt. The man's persona on the walkway seems completely different - when Kurt is modelling, he is all smiles and sultry stares. Blaine looks down at his notes, hating himself for his unprofessional manner.
"S-six years, then." A pause. "But recently, we've heard incredible news - of you selling a script to bigtime producer, Noah Puckerman!" Blaine tries to inject his voice with the appropriate level of enthusiasm, but perhaps he takes it too far - Kurt looks bored. The man hooks his ankles together and continues to stare at Blaine.
"We've all heard amazing things about it, and our readers are naturally very eager to see the fruits of your labour." He internally kicks himself for using such a laughable phrase. Despite the flush rising high on his cheeks - Blaine has never been so starstruck before - he plows on. "But I think I can speak for everyone when I ask - why? Model to writer seems like quite a big jump... did something in your life lead to such a monumental decision-"
Kurt snaps his body forward, his brilliant eyes alight with fire. "You media people are all the same!" he spits out, his jawline tense. Blaine starts in his seat, eyes widening at the venom of his interviewee's words. "Nosy, prying... at least when I was a model, none of you cared about anything beyond the superficial surface. I will say this only once - my personal life is none of your business. Nor is my decision to change career paths." He leans back a little and sniffs. "Feel free to publish every word of that. And my script is magnificent, so you needn't worry about that."
Blaine ducks his head, one hand moving to pull at his collar - he feels hot, tense. "I didn't... mean... I mean. I was only curious," he replies quietly, trying very hard to resist the urge to up and leave. Kurt Hummel has been a bit of a role model for him. Although the man doesn't know it, they both grew up within hours of each other. Blaine has always admired Kurt's work, and the way he fought for his dreams - not to mention his kindness and good humour.
Which seems to be a complete lie.
Kurt eyes him, and Blaine scribbles something down in his notebook to avoid looking up. He hears someone clear their throat, and looks up in surprise at Kurt.
"Perhaps I was a bit harsh." The other man's voice is stiff, his body language still tight. "I've always wanted to write. I used to write songs, in Glee club." He laughs slightly and looks down, and Blaine catches his breath at the sheer symmetry of his face, the shadows cast by his eyelashes. "I was originally a musical theater major. But I found myself in the fashion world before long, and here I stayed... until I decided. Life's too short to spend time doing something you don't like, when there's every chance you can do something you do like." Kurt's eyes rise, until his gaze is firmly locked with Blaine's. "Hence, the script."
Blaine is speechless. Kurt suddenly looks... shy?
"You're different," the chestnut-haired man says, tilting his head to one side and gazing at Blaine. "You're not here for gossip, are you?"
Blaine shakes his head. "I'm here for me and for you," he responds. "Because that's all that should matter."
Kurt laughs coyly. "Perhaps I matter just a little bit more, here." Blaine blushes again, and Kurt grins like the cat that got the cream.
"Let's start again, shall we?"
