Candles

Blaine never thought that something as innocuous as one of Kurt's impulse buys would stir such deep feelings about how sure he is they are meant for each other.

Blaine sits staring at the plain brown box, his curiosity building with each minute that ticked by.  His birthday is coming up and Kurt has never disappointed with the amazing gifts.  The refurbished antique pocket-watch he got him last year Blaine still thinks is too gorgeous to ever actually use.

He's relieved when Kurt finally walks through the door, placing his messenger bag on the dining table and greeting Blaine with a simple, "Hey, babe."  When his eyes land on the box, however, they light up and he claps his hands in front of him, "Oh my gosh, they came?"

"What came?" Blaine asks, shifting over on the couch a little to let Kurt sit next to him.

"You'll see," Kurt answers in a sing-song voice, using his keys to tear at the tape on the box.  He rifles through bubble wrap to lift out a smaller box.  When he gingerly opens it he gasps with delight.

"Kurt, can I see?" Blaine is a little disappointed--it's obviously not his birthday present or Kurt wouldn't have opened the package in front of him.

"Oh!  Yes, yes, look," Kurt lifts an object out of the box and hands it to Blaine.  In his palm is a votive candle, nondescript except for the monogram engraved into the glass on the side.

Blaine rubs his thumb over the carved letters on the side, "K and B?" he asks, looking back up at Kurt.

"Yeah, I was browsing through Pottery Barn and I saw these and I thought..." Kurt trails off when he sees the wide-eyed look Blaine is giving him.  "Don't you like them?"

"I--yeah.  I do," Blaine looks down at the candle in his hands and brings it up to his face to sniff at it; it smells like lilies.

"Are you okay?" Kurt stops taking candles out of the box, four already sitting on the coffee table, and for a moment Blaine stares quizzically at all of them collected there.  Kurt chuckles a little nervously, "I may have gone a little overboard when ordering them..."

"I like them," Blaine repeats, looking at Kurt again.  "We've just never..." Blaine's eyes slide down to the candle again, where K&B are woven into the glass.

Kurt's eyes widen as the reason for Blaine's hesitance dawns him.  "Oh, um, I didn't even think--I just assumed... but you like them?" Kurt is now all too aware of the significance of the little candle in Blaine's hand.  He hadn't even considered anything else other than putting their initials together.  Now that he thinks about it, maybe he had been a little presumptuous.  This sort of thing is usually preserved for weddings but Kurt had thought they would look so perfect on the credenza in the dining room.

"I thought they would look good in the dining room..." Kurt tells him as he picks up a candle and sniffs lightly at it--lilies are one of his favorite flowers.

Blaine laughs and turns the candle over in his hand.  He'd always admired how right the initials looked next to each other--an old high school notebook filled with the same letters can attest to that.  Having them carved in glass makes it seem that much more real and so much more adult that all he can do is laugh.  Because it makes him happy.

"You know what?" Blaine asks, taking the candle out of Kurt's palm and setting it down with the one in his before gripping Kurt's hand.  He looks into Kurt's clear blue eyes, searching his face for... something.  He's not sure what until Kurt smiles back at him and then he feels like he knows.  "I think they would, too."
