"Can I look yet?"
"No! Not yet!" came Blaine's whispered reply as he turned off the car engine and slipped out of the door into the snow. Hurrying around the front of the car, he opened Kurt's door and helped him out, the entire time making sure his hands were shielding his eyes.
"Blaine," Kurt whined slightly, stomping his foot, his bottom lip sticking out in a pout.
"Hush," was Blaine's reply as he smiled and reached up to tap his boyfriend's lip with his finger. "Just a couple more minutes."
With a resigned sigh, Kurt nodded and stayed silent, keeping his ears tuned to sounds around him. Everything was quiet though, except for the clump of Stark jumping to the ground, everything muffled by the thick blanket of snow.
Blaine was smiling, his cheeks tingling with cold as he unhooked Stark's leash and began to guide Kurt with a gloved hand against the small of his back. Stark bounded forward, excited for room to run, excited because of the amount of snow he had to romp around in. Kurt giggled, his voice breathy, "Sounds like Stark is having fun." Kurt's brain hurt from trying to figure out exactly where they were, he just hoped Blaine thought it through because it was really cold.
Blaine stopped at the back of his car and left Kurt to open the hatch. Reaching in, he gathered two pairs of skates in his arms, before closing the back and walking away from Kurt.
"Blaine?" Kurt asked tentatively, holding back the urge to peek as he heard retreating footsteps.
"Okay, you can look."
Kurt dropped his hands and blinked at Blaine who stood a few feet away, his back to a frozen lake. Their lake. His eyes rested on the pairs of ice skates that Blaine held up, a smile spreading over his lips.
"I thought we could have a special ice skating date, especially after I saw how perfectly the lake froze over." Blaine was smiling a full out, tooth bearing smile as he cocked his head at Kurt.
Kurt laughed, shaking his head at his boyfriend as he approached him. "That's a wonderful idea, but," Kurt paused as he stepped up to Blaine, reaching out to smooth over the collar on his coat, "I've never gone ice skating before."
"That's fine! It's not that hard, I'll show you the ropes." Blaine was excited for the chance to finally show Kurt something new, something he's done since he was a child.
"Okay," Kurt said breathlessly, his eyes locked with Blaine's, the hazel glittering with the light from the moon. "Let's get these on then!" Kurt grabbed a pair of skates and began to unlace his boots.
Once they both were laced into their ice skates, Blaine grabbed a hold of Kurt's hand, tugging him towards the lake. "We'll take it slow," he murmured, giving Kurt a reassuring look.
"Alright, okay, we've got this," Kurt mumbled to himself, clutching tight to Blaine's hand as nervousness began to prickle up his spine.
Blaine chuckled as he felt Kurt's grip get tighter as he began to ease them onto the ice. "Come on," he beckoned, tugging a bit on Kurt's hand. Kurt slid across the ice with Blaine, easily at first, till he tried to move by himself, which resulted in him pitching forward into Blaine's arms.
With a squeak, he wrapped his arms around Blaine's shoulders, hugging him close, eyes wide with fright. "Blaine, I thought you said it'd be easy!"
Blaine chuckled, bracing his palms on Kurt's waist. "Okay, so maybe it takes some getting used to, but-"
"You just did this to get me into your arms, didn't you?" Kurt teased, bumping their noses together.
"No, no, no. Believe me, I have easier ways of doing that."
Kurt shook his head before hiding his face in Blaine's neck. "I don't like this. Neither does Stark." They both glanced over to the shore where the pup was staring at the ice as though it was a monster. He'd take a step forward before hopping backwards into the snow, whining. The two boys laughed, their faces pink from the cold.
"How about I never let go? We'll ice skate together so I'll always be there to catch your fall?"
Kurt smiled and nodded happily. "I'd like that."
"Good. You just have to trust me."
"You know I do."
"Alright." Blaine held in the urge to squeal at the ease that that phrase came from Kurt's lips. "Here, turn."
Kurt looked at Blaine, a reluctant expression passing over his face till he decided it was okay. He turned his body till his back was to Blaine, breathing evenly, watching as it came out in white puffs. Blaine's hands found their usual spot on Kurt's waist, giving a slight squeeze, making Kurt jump and squeak.
Blaine laughed, burying his face against Kurt's back to try and stifle it. "Okay," Blaine breathed after a moment, keeping his face composed. "I'm going to lead you across the ice. Just move your feet like you would roller skating."
Kurt pulled a face. "Blaine, you know I'm not good at roller skating either, why are you doing this to me?"
"Oh, be quiet, Drama Queen."
Kurt rolled his eyes, startling suddenly as Blaine pushed his back and moved him forward. "Blaine!"
"Kurt, it'll be okay," Blaine whispered. "Just move your feet."
Kurt nodded, his eyebrows knitting together as Blaine moved again and nudged Kurt forward. Kurt carefully moved a foot forward, then another, then another, smiling as moving over the ice became easier with both of them skating. It was slow, Kurt moving his feet at a child's pace, but Blaine was content, adoration taking over his expression.
Things became easier as Kurt got used to being on the ice, being ed by Blaine. After a while, Blaine stopped them, licking his chapped lips. "Give me your hand."
Kurt turned, gave Blaine a quizzical look, but slid his hand into Blaine's anyway.
"I'm going to skate beside you now. And maybe, before we leave, you'll be brave enough to skate by yourself.
"Maybe," Kurt murmured, a confident smile passing over his lips.
"That's the spirit!" Squeezing Kurt's hand quickly, Blaine began to tug him as he skated away. He kept his pace slow, letting Kurt get used to the feel of skating without someone behind him. Blaine tried not to laugh as Kurt would catch on the ice or slip and almost fall, reminding Blaine of Bambi at moments. Squeaks and squeals kept emitting from his boyfriend's mouth as he clutched tight to Blaine's hand and got used to the new activity.
"Blaine, I think I'm ready."
Blaine looked over, his eyebrows shooting up. They had circled the lake and after many falls into Blaine's arms, Kurt looked like he was getting better at it. "You sure, honey?"
"Yes! I am!" Kurt had the determined look on his face that Blaine knew very well, the look that let him know he was about to lose whatever argument he tried. Kurt pulled his hand from Blaine's grasp, taking a breath.
Blaine bit back a smirk, crossing his arms over his chest as Kurt seemed to nod to himself in reassurance.
All it took was half a minute for Kurt to end up on the ice on his butt. His face was pulled into a scowl when he looked at Blaine was was shaking with suppressed laughter. "Shut up," Kurt snapped.
Blaine automatically schooled his face into an innocent look.
Kurt pushed himself back up, his expression back to the hard determination. And Blaine would admit that after his first fall, he did better than Blaine expected. He still acted like a newborn foal trying to walk for the first time, but he was slowly growing better.
Kurt pitched forward, but caught himself, arms flailing before he stopped. He looked over at Blaine, just waiting for a smartass comment; but all he got was Blaine clapping at him. He skated forward as Kurt straightened, his icy blue eyes rolling. "You make it look so easy, you ass."
Blaine shrugged, clasping his hands behind his back, skating around Kurt effortlessly. "That's what happens when your parents make you ice skate with annoying cousins."
Again, Blaine caught the rolling of eyes, and couldn't help but smirk. Kurt lunged forward, pushing at Blaine's shoulder, knocking him off balance. Blaine tried to stop, but wiped out anyway, looking up with wide eyes from his position on his back. "Oopsie," Kurt murmured, giggles bursting from his mouth.
"Oh ho ho, you're gonna get it," Blaine grunted, pushing himself up as quickly as he could.
Kurt's eyes widened in playful panic as he began to skate away as fast as he could. Blaine caught up quickly though, throwing his arms around Kurt's middle, spinning them as laughter permeated the night air.
"You're evil," Blaine muttered into Kurt's ear as he turned in his arms, his brown hair slightly mussed, breathless.
"You like me that way." Kurt's voice came out as breathless as he looked, blue eyes flickering to Blaine's red lips.
"You're not wrong there." Blaine tilted his head up, finally pressing their cold lips together.
With a sharp intake of breath, Kurt pulled away. "You're freezing." A small smiled pulled at the corner of his lips as he began to unravel the scarf around his neck. "Here." He slid it around Blaine's neck before wrapping it around his neck too so they were sharing it. "There. Better." Their faces were so close that Blaine could feel Kurt's breath against his nose.
"Much better," Blaine chuckled.
A bark drew both of the boys' attention towards the shore where Stark was pawing at the edge of the frozen lake. "Just wait for it. He'll be joining us soon," Kurt whispered matter-of-factly, "He hates being left out of cuddling sessions."
And as always, Kurt was right, not even a minute later Stark was taking his first tentative step onto the ice. He didn't like it, not at all. He slipped and went spread eagle the moment all four paws were on the ice. But he couldn't let Kurt and Blaine have all the fun, so he got back up and scrambled across the ice, his legs flying comically as he moved slowly towards them. Once he started though, he couldn't stop, and Stark went sliding head first into the boys' legs, making them collapse in a heap of laughter.
"Stark!" Kurt shrieked as he jumped into Kurt's lap, climbing up his chest to lap at Kurt's pink cheek with his tongue.
"You ridiculous animal," Blaine laughed, not even moving to get up from where he fell, reaching over to pet at the dog.
Kurt guffawed and just fell backwards, laying on the ice as Stark took perch on his chest, even though he was getting far too big to be a lapdog. Blaine followed lead soon after, falling back on the ice, staring up at the stars in the sky. "What a beautiful night," came Kurt's soft, melodic voice.
"Perfect," Blaine agreed, turning his head to watch Kurt instead.
They laid like that for a while, silent and content, till fat snowflakes began to drift down and land onto their faces.
"Come on, let's get back to the car," Blaine said, getting up and helping Kurt to his feet. They skated back to the shore and got back into their boots as they waited for Stark to join them. Once ready, Blaine led them back to his vehicle, pausing by the back. "Stay here," he ordered Kurt, turning to put Stark in the backseat. When he got back to Kurt, his boyfriend was giving him a curious look. "I hope you didn't think our date was over."
Lifting the hatch, Blaine revealed a blanket spread out on the space that he cleared out earlier that night. A small basket sat snug against the back of the seat and a small lantern was settled next to it. Blaine crawled in, turning on the lamp before reaching over the seat to put the wet skates with Stark who was curled tired on the seat. Blaine sat back, motioning for Kurt to join him. Kurt shook his head, muttering "Dork" before joining him anyway, closing the lift-gate.
Blaine dug through the bag before pulling out a metal thermos and two mugs. He handed one to Kurt before screwing off the top of the thermos and filling both cups with the still steaming hot chocolate. "Quinn's famous hot cocoa," Blaine said, capping the thermos and smiling at Kurt.
Kurt sighed, lifting the much to his nose to breath in the warmth. "Thank you, this is all so perfect."
Blaine's face fell slightly as he shrugged. "I just...I'm not going to be able to spend Christmas with you, so I wanted to do something special."
Kurt lowered his cup from his lips, frowning. Blaine was avoiding eye contact, his fingers tight around his mug. Kurt set his down carefully before crawling over to Blaine, cupping his jaw with his hand before pressing a kiss to his warming lips. Blaine could taste the sweetness of the cocoa and the intoxicating taste of Kurt, his breath rushing from his nose. "I'm sorry," Kurt whispered after pulling away, his eyes sad.
"No, no," Blaine quickly said, "Don't be. I understand. It's just...slightly disappointing. But don't apologize for something you can't control. Let's just enjoy right now, okay?"
"'Kay." Kurt grabbed his cup back and moved to settle between Blaine's legs, his back resting against Blaine's chest. "Right now." He sipped at his hot chocolate, silence settling around them as they watched the snow fall outside the car windows.
"I love you," Blaine whispered after some time of laying there quietly. He set his cup down and leaned forward to plant an awkward kiss on Kurt's lips.
"I love you too," Kurt said happily, turning in Blaine's lap, moving to straddle him to make it easier to kiss him back. Sliding his hands up the back of Blaine's neck, he buried his fingers in dark curls. "I'm going to miss this, and you. I hate this stupid wolf stuff," he muttered against Blaine's lips.
"Hey, hey, we'll be back together soon enough, love," Blaine said, his hand stroking Kurt's back. "Remember what I said about enjoying right now?"
"Yes, yes, alright," Kurt breathed. He lifted his head and looked over the seat at a sleeping Stark. "So...do you think...if we took advantage of the time we have together right now...we'd wake Stark?"
Blaine cocked an eyebrow, looking a bit scandalized before his lips fell into an easy smile. "Well...I dunno...." Blaine braced his hands on Kurt's hips before quickly, and carefully, flipping them over so he was hovering over him. "Do you want to find out?"
