Kurt had never expected to receive such depressing news, not on Christmas Eve. He felt like he was slowly losing everything, like life was slowly beating him down after he had just got back up from the last beating he had received from it. He had almost lost his father 2 years ago and he knew how lucky he was that he was still with him but having to think about the fact he could lose him again made him feel physically sick and as much as Burt reassured him that there was about a 100% survival rate since he caught it early it still didn't give him any comfort, 100% wasn't good. He was sure if it was 1000% he wouldn't be happy. His father shouldn't have to go through this, no one should. He tried to put it to the back of his mind like his father wanted since it was Christmas after all but it was there just hanging out at the back of his mind, like it was waving a flag and screaming 'Look at me'.
After exchanging presents a bit of the old Christmas spirit had returned, maybe his father was right and he was going to be okay. They should enjoy Christmas no matter what and like his father had told him earlier to keep people close.
"You have to go and collect your present now" Burt said as he slowly moved the cap he had received on his head to the right size.
"What is it?" Kurt said as he walked over the stand that was holding his long black jacket.
"I'm not saying you have to go pick it up." Burt said as he jumped off the sofa like a kid who was excited about Santa coming.
"Okay okay I'm going." Kurt shouted back as he wrapped his scarf around neck.
"You're going to love it."
When Kurt heard a voice he knew too well shout the words "Package for Kurt Hummel" Kurt felt his heart actually skip a beat. He turned around so fast and for one second everything was perfect. He had forgotten the last few terrible weeks and for this second it was just him and the love of his life in New York at Christmas. But as soon as Blaine mentioned about how he promised to look after his father everything came rushing back and as much as he put on a false smile he knew it didn't help. Of course he was happy to see Blaine even after what happened he still was one of his best friends and he was there for him when no one else was, he saved Kurt. How could you forget all that but of course he still hadn't fully forgiven him but they were on speaking terms again and that's all that mattered for now.
Kurt couldn't really sleep that night. After he offered his bed to Burt he had decided to sleep in Rachel's since she wouldn't have minded. He had the long curtain open that separated the two beds as he chatted to his father before he fell to sleep. Blaine had offered to sleep on the sofa knowing that it would have been awkward for both of them to sleep in the same bed. Both were fast asleep and one of them was snoring quietly but Kurt wasn't sure which one. He sat up in his bed his mind racing with so many thoughts. He felt like his brain was going to explode. He really wished that Blaine was in the bed with him, to cuddle him and tell him it was going to be okay. That Burt was going to be around for years to come, to see his first Broadway show, the day he gets married, the day he finds out his going to be a father. He can't lose him now, not ever. He knew one day he would have to say bye but he didn't expect it could happen so soon. He sighed as he turned to lie on his and cuddled the pillow next to him imagining it was Blaine and hoping that he could fall asleep and maybe when he woke up everything would be back as it used to be.
