They headed straight for the hospital as soon as they arrived in Ohio. Kurt called Andrea to let her know they were coming, not wanting to startle her when they showed up. He also called his dad and Carole to let them know that he and Blaine are in Ohio, they were on their way to the hospital when he called.
They met Andrea in the waiting room so she could fill them in on everything.
"The doctor said the cancer was spreading fast. They're not sure what caused it to flare up all of a sudden, but they're doing everything they can to stop it from getting worse." Andrea explained, mostly to Kurt because Blaine wasn't really focused.
"You need to get some rest, you look exhausted." Kurt had never seen his mother-in-law look so weak.
"I-I can't, I have to stay with him."
"You need to rest, you're not going to much use if you're too tired. Go home, get some sleep, eat, take shower, just rest. Blaine and I will stay with him and my dad and Carole are on their way as well."
"I-I- you'll call me if anything happens?"
"Yes, I promise, just please go get some rest."
"O-okay. Thank you Kurt." Andrea hugged him tightly before turning to Blaine. "Sweetie, you don't have to stay strong. I know you're scared."
Blaine finally looked at his mother, seeing how scared and exhausted she is. "I know Mom. Go home and get some rest."
Kurt waited until Andrea was out of sight to speak again. "Are you sure you're ready? You don't have to go in right now."
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be Kurt, there's no point in waiting." Blaine tried to smile but failed.
"Okay, let's go." Kurt reached for Blaine's hand, lacing their fingers as they headed back the hall towards James' room.
Burt and Carole arrived about ten minutes after Kurt and Blaine went back to the room.
Before going into the room, Burt asked Kurt to talk to him in the hall. "How's Blaine holding up Kiddo?"
"Honestly Dad, not good at all. He's trying to be strong and stay calm, but I know him better than that. He's scared and he feels completely helpless. He's one step away from breaking down completely."
"Is there anything Carole and I can do to help?"
"I don't know, I'm just glad you're here. We sent Andrea home to get some rest, she was exhausted." Kurt ran his hands through his hair. He wants to help Blaine, but has no idea how.
"Hey, how are you holding up bud?" Kurt knows his son, he knows when he's close to breaking.
"I-I'm good. I just need to be there for Blaine."
"Kurt, I know you, what's going on?"
"I'm scared Dad. The last time I saw Blaine like this was when Sam called me to come back to Ohio after the break up. I need to help him, but this time I don't know how."
"I don't know what to tell you Kiddo, just be there for him, let him know he's not alone. That's the only thing you can do."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. I need to get back in there." Burt watched his son walk into the room. He had to take a second to compose himself before following. After everything Kurt and Blaine have been through, they don't deserve this.
The night went by uneventful, nurses can and went, but nothing changed. James never woke up.
Morning came and Burt and Carole went to get breakfast, leaving the boys to watch over James.
Blaine was slipping in and out of sleep, so he didn't notice when James began to stir.
"Blaine, Blaine wake up." Kurt nudged him, whispering in his ear.
"W-wha- Dad?" Blaine looked up to find his dad awake and smiling weakly.
"Hey kid." James' voice was weak, but usable.
"Dad, oh my- I-I thought-" Blaine could feel the tears welling up, he did his best to keep them from falling.
"Hey, hey, don't worry Blaine, everything will be okay." James hated seeing his son so upset.
"H-how do you know? The d-doctor said-"
"No, don't."
"Dad-"
"Blaine, I know what the doctor said. I don't want you to think about that though, okay? I'm so sorry for everything. I should've been a better father to you, I shouldn't have pushed you away or tried to change you. I will never forgive myself for how I treated you. I am so proud of you Blaine, you are an amazing man and the best son a father could ask for. I always dreamed of the day you would have kid, being a grandfather is something I've always wanted, and God knows Cooper isn't ready to settle down. Just promise me you'll tell them about me, promise me."
"Dad, please don't talk like that." Blaine felt like his heart had been ripped from his chest.
"I'm dying Blaine, I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. Do me this one thing and promise me that when you have children you'll tell them about their grandpa James and how much he loves them."
"I-I-"
"We promise." Kurt spoke up, stepping behind Blaine.
"T-thank you Kurt, thank you for everything. Take care of my boy, he needs you more than he thinks."
"I will James, always."
"Kurt, stop it! Don't let him talk like that!" Blaine started yelling.
"Blaine please, calm down." Kurt wasn't sure how he was managing to keep himself so calm.
"Calm down? My dad is dying, how am I suppose to calm down?"
"Blaine, you're going to get yourself thrown out. What good would that do?"
"I-I- Kurt." Blaine felt so helpless, he just wanted everything to be okay.
"I'm right here sweetie, I'm not going anywhere." Kurt pulled Blaine into his arms, leting Blaine cling to him and cry.
Kurt carefully moved them to the chair, pulling Blaine into his lap and holding him.
Eventually Blaine stopped crying, his breathing evened out, and he was asleep. Kurt just continued to hold him, singing softly into his ear to sooth him.
When Burt and Carole got back, they told Kurt to take Blaine to their house to he could get some rest and promised to call if anything happened.
Kurt woke Blaine long enough to get him to the car, hoping he wouldn't resist. Thankfully, Blaine was too exhausted to struggle.
Kurt pulled up to his old home, glancing over at Blaine as he put the car in park. He thought back to the promise he'd made James, then he thought back to the conversaion he and Blaine had had about having kids. They'd looked into it about a year ago, wanting to know they're options for when they decided they wanted kids.
They had decided to wait a few more years, at least until after they were out of school. "But we are out of school now." Kurt thought to himself.
With one final look at Blaine, he made up his mind. Once Blaine was rested, he'd talk to him about it, hopefully Blaine will go along with his plan.
