“What’s that pin for?” Blaine asked at lunch one day, looking expectantly at the gold spike pin attached to Sebastian’s lapel. He noticed that Marc, Nick and Jeff were all wearing them too.
“Warbler emblem” Sebastian replied proudly. “We’re in the Warblers.” When Blaine looked confused, Sebastian chuckled and continued. “The Warblers are a singing group here at Dalton.”
“Like a Glee Club?” Blaine asked. He’d been in the Glee Club at his old school, he had no idea there was one here.
Marc scoffed and Sebastian grinned at him and turned back to Blaine. “I guess you could say that. Although, Glee Club’s have a kind of persona for being pretty lame...the Warblers are like rock stars...are you coming to the ceremony tonight?”
“The what?” Blaine looked up from his pasta.
“Ceremony. It’s not actually a ceremony, we just call it that. It’s where everyone gathers on the football field and it’s pretty much a huge party but the teachers are there and there’s no alcohol. But we’re performing a song there, if you wanted to come watch?”
Blaine smiled. “That sounds great. What time?”
“Starts at 7, you can come down with us. The performance is actually going to be quite funny I think. This guy, Olly, he’s a Warbler and his girlfriend recently had this huge argument with him. Poor guy was torn up for almost 2 weeks about it before he practically begged Kurt to let the Warblers try help him get her back.” Sebastian, Marc, Nick and Jeff all laughed a bit.
“Begged Kurt?” Blaine repeated.
“Yeah. Kurt’s the head Warbler. He’s also head of the council too. Everything is ran by him, and nothing goes unless he says so. But luckily Kurt and Olly used to be best friends in elementary school so Kurt agreed.”
Blaine nodded. It didn’t surprise him that Kurt was the head of fucking everything around here. Ever since that night when he’d kissed Blaine in his room, Blaine hadn’t been able to figure him out. He seemed so guarded and sarcastic and bitchy around Blaine but then Sebastian spoke about him like he was this really friendly guy who would do anything for his friends. Things never seemed to add up.
“I’ll meet you guys later? Before the ceremony?” Blaine said as he stood.
“Yeah! Meet us at our dorm and we’ll take you down!”
“See you!” Marc waved.
--
A couple of hours later found Blaine outside Marc and Sebastian’s dorm in a pair of tight red jeans and a black shirt, loosely tucked in. He wore a grey cardigan on top. He knocked twice hard on the door and then Marc and Sebastian filed out of the room before him.
“Ready?” They said, both of their gold pins visible on their shirts –Warbler emblems, Blaine recalled.
“Yeah” Blaine said, and they all headed down to the football field.
Before long, Blaine had a cup of soda in one hand and was chatting animatedly with Jeff and Nick when a loud sharp horn rang out for no longer than a second, followed by an enchantment of “OH YEAH” from within the crowd.
Nick and Jeff looked at each other and laughed, putting their cups down.
“Right, that’s us Blaine. Warbler cries. Time for us to perform. Follow us; we’ll get you a good spot to watch.”
Blaine followed and stood where they instructed and they promised him that No Blaine, you won’t get hurt or anything they’re just going to sing.
Blaine watched as all of the Warblers arranged themselves into rows, put some microphones around their ears, with
Kurt stood at the front and a nervous looking boy stood directly to his right.
Music started thumping, and Kurt spoke with a huge grin on his face.
Ladies and Gentlemen
We’ve got a special treat for you tonight,
I’m gonna call my friend Olly up here,
To sing to one lady...
Olly! Let’s go man.
Kurt stood back and patted the nervous boy on the back as he joined in with the side stepping and finger clicking of the other Warblers. Olly began singing.
My name is Olly, Nice to meet ya, can I tell you baby,
Look around there’s a whole lot of pretty ladies,
But not like you, you shine so bright, yeah
He reached forward and took a girls hand, bringing her slightly out of the crowd and she brought her hand up to play with her long brown hair nervously, with a small grin as the boy sang to her. The rest of the Warblers harmonised and did some simple synchronised dance moves, but Blaine was so impressed with how well they all worked, moved and sounded together.
I was wondering if you and me could spend a minute,
On the floor up and close getting lost in it,
I won’t give up without a fight
I just wanna, ooh ooh, oh oh baby
I just want you to dance with me tonight,
So come on, ooh ooh, oh oh baby,
I just want you to dance with me tonight
Kurt stood forward and joined in with the lead solo position, taking over on some of the “oh baby” and then sung the next verse himself, Olly moved back to let Kurt sing loud and suggestively towards the audience. This was the Kurt that Blaine had started to know.
We’re getting sweat, hot and heavy in the crowd now,
Loosen up and let your hands go down, down
Go with it, yeah just close your eyes...yeah,
I feel the music moving through your body,
Looking at you I can tell you want me,
Don’t stop, keep going till the morning light, yeah
Kurt looked directly at Blaine when he sung ‘I can tell you want me’. It made Blaine shiver and swallow, but he couldn’t figure out why Kurt had such a strong affect on him. If anything, Blaine resented him. Olly stepped forward and joined back in, taking over from Kurt.
I just wanna, ooh ooh, oh oh baby
I just want you to dance with me tonight,
So come on, ooh ooh, oh oh baby,
I just want you to dance with me tonight
Sebastian and Jeff stood forward and Sebastian pushed his hips backwards into Kurt’s when he was in front of him, making Kurt giggle and step backwards. Sebastian turned to Kurt, laughed and winked and then started singing again. Blaine was amazed that they could be like that with each other. Kurt seemed to be a million different people at the same time but Sebastian could easily grind against him in front of his boyfriend and they’d all easily laugh it off later. It pissed Blaine off a little bit.
Break it down now,
Shake it like that,
Blaine noticed the Warblers taking people’s hands and dragging them all to dance; he also noticed how Kurt didn’t. Olly danced closely with the girl he was singing too, the song seemed to have worked. Sebastian grabbed Blaine’s hand and dragged him in, still singing the song clearly through the microphone, ignoring Blaine’s protests; he forced him into Kurt’s body and then spun off to dance with Marc.
Now bring it all back,
To dance with me tonight...
One more time, one more time, come on now...
Blaine was about to step backwards and apologise, when Kurt’s warm hand placed on the small of his back and swayed them together. Blaine put his hands on Kurt’s waist while they danced, and Kurt hummed the tune softly into Blaine’s ear.
Do your thing, everybody sing
I just want you to dance with me tonight
I just wanna, ooh ooh, oh oh baby
I just want you to dance with me tonight,
So come on, ooh ooh, oh oh baby,
I just want you to dance with me tonight
The song faded out and everyone broke into applause and cheers for them. Kurt somewhat reluctantly let go of Blaine and moved to stand at the front of where the Warblers had moved back into their line up.
“Thank you! Thank you!” Kurt said, smiling. “We’ll see you at Sectionals.” he winked and then turned to the Warblers, taking off his mic and passing it to a younger student waiting by his side.
“Olly?” Kurt said expectantly.
“Yes, it worked. Thank you, thank you” he said, extremely grateful.
“Anytime my friend. Anytime.” Kurt said, nodding and smiling at him, suddenly his smile fell and he turned to
Sebastian. “Seb. You can’t grind on me in public.”
Sebastian and Marc broke into laughter. “You said that about private too Kurt...” He whined, jokingly.
“You’re an asshole; I have an image to uphold.” Kurt grinned.
“Oh I’m sorry, I wouldn’t want to tarnish your image of being completely innocent...oh wait...”
Kurt laughed and patted Sebastian’s shoulder. “Alright, alright. Run along you two.” He said, and Marc and
Sebastian walked over to Blaine. Blaine grinned at them.
“So what did you think?!”
“You guys were amazing. Seriously.” Blaine said truthfully.
“Thank you, thank you.” Marc replied.
“Did you have fun dancing with Kurt?” Sebastian winked.
“Uhh...” Blaine stuttered.
“Why does everyone say that when I ask them things about Hummel?” Sebastian asked Marc, smiling. Marc returned it.
“Because when it comes to Kurt, he leaves people speechless!” Marc dramatically said, throwing his arm above his head to demonstrate his over-exaggerated statement.
Sebastian laughed. “Oh, oh but of course.” he paused. “Can you sing Blaine?”
“Uh, yeah. I was in my old school Glee Club.”
“You should audition for the Warblers. We’re holding auditions tomorrow in the rehearsal room. I’ll show you where it is in the morning, if you’d like?” Marc added.
Blaine blinked hard, and then nodded. “I-Yeah. I’d love that. Thank you.” He said gratefully.
I wonder what hotties Kurt will accept this year. Rumour has it that his latest stalker is auditioning with the help of new BFF’s Marc and Sebastian.
“Aaron? You’re up next.” Marc said softly, sticking his head around the door.
Blaine watched as a sweating tall boy nodded and rose from his seat and walked into the room. The door clicked shut.
Blaine felt himself growing nervous but shook it off, knowing he was prepared for this and better than half the Warblers that were there already. All he had to get was that gold pin and he was in. He wasn’t sure why he wanted to be “in” so badly. Sebastian, Marc, Nick and Jeff had already made it clear they liked him enough to be his friend, and Kurt...well he wasn’t sure about Kurt but Kurt knew his name and that was apparently a big deal at Dalton. Minutes passed and Marc’s head stuck back around the door.
“Come on Blainers. Do us proud.” He winked and then disappeared, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Blaine laughed under his breath and entered the room.
--
Kurt watched as Blaine strode across the rehearsal room behind Marc. He looked comfortable, Kurt smiled, but his face dropped when Blaine looked at him and started singing acapella. That was a requirement for the Warbler auditions. It didn’t matter what you sounded like with a backing track, over half of the performances the Warblers did were acapella so the new Warblers had to be able to sound good. Blaine sung confidently, smiling around the room at various existing Warblers, eyes lingering on Troy, a boy sat to Blaine’s right. Kurt looked pointedly at Troy and Troy noticed. He looked over to Kurt and then dropped his gaze, avoiding Blaine’s eye contact for the rest of the song. Blaine finished his song nicely, and the Warblers (apart from Kurt) clapped his applause.
“Thank you, Blaine Anderson. You can go.” Kurt said coldly. Blaine nodded and left the room.
When the door clicked shut, all the Warblers turned to Kurt. But Kurt had his eyes set on Troy.
“Troy. Thoughts?” He asked sternly. Sebastian looked to
Marc and gulped, knowing exactly what Kurt had seen.
“I thought he was brilliant. It’d be a shame not to have him in the mix.” Troy said, and then turned away quickly from Kurt’s gaze.
“Seb?” Kurt said without reacting to Troy’s comment.
“Blaine’s perfect for the Warblers.”
Kurt nodded.
“Trent?”
“Fantastic, just fantastic.” Another Warbler said.
“Then it’s decided.” Kurt spoke before he stood and left
the room.
--
“Congratulations Blaine.” Sebastian grinned. “You were really great today.”
Blaine pinned his gold spike onto his lapel and smiled back. “Thank you so much.”
A few Warblers patted him on the back before filing off one by one. Only one was left.
“I’m Troy.” The boy said, holding his hand out to Blaine.
Blaine looked up at the Troy. Slightly taller than him, with dark brown hair and gorgeous green eyes.
“Blaine.” Blaine said, shaking his hand.
“It’s nice to meet you Blaine. Maybe we could, go for coffee some time?” He asked shyly. Blaine blushed.
“How-How about...right now?”
Troy grinned. “I’d love to.”
Blaine opened the door and they walked out together, climbing into Troy’s car and heading towards a local coffee shop Troy explained about on the way there.
--
“Sebastian. Where’s Blaine? I’d like to talk to him.” Kurt requested.
“He’s gone for coffee Hummel. You might’ve missed your chance.” He laughed, hand slipping down to grip Marc’s.
“Coffee with Troy?” Kurt guessed, hip cocking out and his hand placing instantly on his waist.
“Yeah I think so. Troy seemed pretty smitten.” Marc added.
“Smitten? Oh honey. I thought you knew what smitten meant, seen as you are. Troy’s not smitten with Blaine. He just wants to be fucked, he’ll realise that Blaine’s not putting out and then he’ll be back at my dorm by tomorrow evening.”
Kurt turned on his heels and walked out, slamming the door a bit harder than usual.
Uh oh. My sources tell me that Kurt's flown out to Paris mid-semester to go see Daddy. This hasn't happened since Sebastian transferred for a year during middle school. We wonder what's pushed Kurt over the edge this time.
