When Kurt Hummel first came to New York, he did not plan to be a waiter at The Four Seasons Hotel. He hoped to graduate from NYADA and book a Broadway show. But of course that's not how things work in the real world.
After Kurt graduated, he went on countless auditions to which he heard the same response "Sorry you're not what we are looking for" or occasionally he would get the "Don't call us, we'll call you" bit.
He realized fairly quickly that living in New York was not cheap, so he got a job as a waiter at a local hotel while he was in college. But three years after he graduated, he did not expect to still be working there. He eventually got discouraged and stopped auditioning accepting his fate that he will most likely be working there for the rest of his life.
The only good thing in his life was his fiancé, Sebastian, who he was patiently waiting for to set a date for their wedding as they have been engaged for three years. Kurt was starting to lose hope in their relationship.
Blaine Anderson has the perfect life. He graduated NYU at the top of his class for music, he is marrying the love of his life, Jeremiah next week, and he just got a job as The Four Seasons hotel resident wedding singer.
His dream was always to perform for hundreds of people, and in a way he is, just not the way that he would have imagined. He was always telling himself that everyone has to start somewhere. Look at Idina Menzel, she started out as a wedding singer and look at her now. Blaine could only hope for the same himself.
He got this job to help Jeremiah and him get off their feet after the wedding. It wasn't that Jeremiah was too lazy to get a good job, it's just that he was determined to get a leading role in a movie and wouldn't settle for anything less, rejecting jobs as extras or in commercials. Blaine loves Jeremiah but he is constantly having to reassure himself that Jeremiah is making good decisions for the both of them in the long run.
Blaine's first party he worked turned out to be a fairly small wedding with only 60 guests. An easy night. But he still put on his signature bowtie and approached the microphone with the leading man confidence he always has.
When the young couple got up to slow dance, he played an acoustic version of teenage dream. He got lost in the song, bringing him back to his high school days when his glee club covered it during competitions. As he looked out toward the other side of the ballroom for the first time that night, his eyes met with the most beautiful, bluest eyes he had ever seen. They held each others gaze for the rest of the song. Only when Blaine finished could both of them catch their breath again.
Kurt couldn't help but feel like he's seen this man before but he couldn't figure out from where. All he knew was that he was breathtaking and sings with so much emotion it almost brought tears to his eyes. Kurt was so distracted watching the man perform that he didn't hear Rachel calling him to help her carry the plates she was holding.
"Kurt, I've been calling you for the last five minutes, what has gotten into you?" Rachel followed his gaze to the stage and smirked.
"His name is Blaine. He just started tonight. I hired him after he came in to finalize his wedding and he asked if we had any job openings. You're actually going to be working at his wedding next week."
Kurt's heart sank at Rachel's words. Although he really had no right to be disappointed. First because he hasn't even met the guy, and second because he is engaged himself.
Before Kurt could respond, he heard a commotion coming from one of the tables. By the time he got close enough to see what was going on, he saw Blaine rushing with a teenage boy toward the exit.
Not wanting to seem creepy by following him, he picked up the nearest filled garbage bag and went outside pretending to be throwing it away to look busy.
The sight and sounds that greeted him was not pleasant. The thirteen year old boy was hunched over the garbage can puking his brains out with Blaine supporting him.
Blaine felt Kurt's presence and looked up and flashed him a smile. Kurt blushed at the man's actions and quickly looked away.
When the boy finished and stood upright looking scared, Blaine said "Don't worry, I won't tell your family that you basically drank half of the mini-bar." with a laugh and sent him back into the party with a pat on his back.
Blaine still sat there putting his guitar back around his neck and started strumming, before realizing that someone was still standing there.
"I saw the kid was going to loose it and I didn't think his family should see that." Blaine said without being prompted.
"No wedding singer who has worked here has ever felt the need to help out like that. I see it all the time. They just usually sing when they need to and the rest of the time sit down and eat most of the food," and then after a pause "speaking of which, you sounded amazing up there before." Kurt squeaked out, scolding himself at how high his voice came out.
"Thanks, I'm Blaine by the way."
"Kurt. I hear you're getting married next week, I'm actually going to be the head waiter there. Are you excited?" What a stupid question Kurt, of course he's excited. He's going to marry his wife and they will have a perfect life and live happily ever after. Something Kurt felt he would never get if Sebastian kept waiting.
"Yeah, I'm excited, but a little nervous. It's terrifying thinking about finding one man you want to grow old with for the rest of your life."
Kurt gasped at Blaine's use of the word 'man'.
"What?' Blaine asked confused and stopped strumming.
"I'm sorry I just didn't realize that you were gay." Kurt said quickly.
Blaine immediately tensed up out of habit. "Why, is that a problem?"
"No! Not at all! Kurt said a little too enthusiastically, "I'm gay too."
Blaine couldn't help but feel like he reached an acheivement for reasons he couldn't explain even to himself.
"I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, everyone gets nervous before their wedding, At least you're having a wedding, Kurt added bitterly.
"What do you mean? Blaine asked confused.
Kurt took a deep breath and decided to confide in him. "I've been engaged for three years and we've haven't even set a date yet. I guess I'm just frustrated."
"Well he's a very lucky man, I can't imagine what's taking him so long."
Kurt blushed, which he seemed to be doing a lot ever since he heard Blaine sing.
Blaine hit a sour note while strumming and hit his guitar out of frustration.
Kurt jumped at the sudden noise looking confused.
"I'm trying to write a song to sing for Jeremiah at the wedding, but I just can't seem to get the melody or lyrics right. Nothing is inspiring me."
"Maybe I can help? I did major in musical theatre after all."
"Really? Where did you study?"
"I went to NYADA, It was always my dream school ever since I was in high school back in Ohio.
"Whoa, wait you're from Ohio? Me too! What part? I'm from Westerville."
"No way! I'm from Lima, I can't believe we lived so close but never met before. What school did you go to?"
"I went to an all boys school called Dalton Academy."
"I think I remember competing against your school's Glee club at one time or another. What were they called? It was some kind of bird..."
"The Warblers! Blaine interrupted a little too enthusiastically. "I was their lead singer."
Kurt stood there speechless. That's where he had seen Blaine before. He remembered gushing to his best friend, Mercedes about how dreamy the lead singer looked and sounded on stage while singing Teenage Dream, the same exact song that caught his attention tonight. He looked different now, older obviously and he didn't seem to be wearing as much gel as he remembered.
"I remember you, we beat you guys at regionals my junior year. I was part of The New Directions from McKinley. I can't believe we competed against each other so many years ago and now we wound up in the same place. What a small world."
"Yeah it is a small world." Blaine almost whispered under his breath almost to himself.
Their eyes lingered on each other for a few seconds too long until Kurt finally spoke "Well I better get back to work. I'll see you at your wedding on Tuesday."
Blaine waved goodbye and sat there wondering why he couldn't write a single word about Jeremiah, but could probably write a whole song about Kurt by only talking to him for about ten minutes.
