On the 23rd day of the month of September,
In the year of two thousand eleven,
The people of Lima Heights Adjacent suddenly encountered A deadly threat to their very existence.
And this terrifying enemy surfaced; as such enemies often do,
In the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places.
The Little Shop of Horrors.
A shattering noise pierced the small shop, and Will Schuester turned around with a fierce frown and started shouting into the basement. "What did you break now, Anderson?"
A simple response emanated from within. "Nothing, Mr. Schuester.”
Inside the store room Blaine Anderson stepped back from the pots he had just shattered. He hated being clumsy.
Of course, he hated a lot things about his life. Being clumsy was actually near the bottom of the entirely too long list.
Well, he couldn’t just stand here and stare at the mess. He needed to clean it up. Preferably before Mr. Schuester could see it and get more upset with him. Blaine grabbed the broom off the wall and swept the shattered pots up quickly. He dumped the rubbish in the trash and dusted his hands off on his pants before turning to continue with what he had been doing before he’d made a mess.
Which had been what, exactly? He scanned the room quickly and spotted a bag of potting soil on the steps. Grinning to himself, he crossed the room and hefted the bag up on his shoulder. A few steps later and Blaine dropped the bag of potting soil beside the other bags of soil and took a quick step back, making sure it wouldn’t hit his feet. It landed on the concrete floor of his basement room with a dull thud, sending little bits of dirt and dust flying out from underneath it.
He dusted his hands off on his slacks before turning back to the stairs that lead to the shop overhead. He could hear voices drifting down from the open door and paused momentarily. His hand hovered over the banister while he tried to pick out who it was.
Unfortunately, he gripped it a little too hard and shook it. A pot fell off the top of the banister and fell to the floor with a loud crash as it shattered.
"Blaine! What is going on back there?"
"Very little, Mr. Schuester!" He shouted back up at his boss. He let go of the banister and went back for the broom again.
"Kurt, would you go back there and see what he's-“ Blaine paled and the hand he was gripping the broom with trembled. Kurt was already here? Oh god, he was such a hopeless, clumsy, fool. A stupid, poor, worthless, fool. And now he’d broken the pot and Kurt would come down here and try to help with his mess because Blaine couldn’t take care of his chores without making a mess.
“Just leave whatever mess you’ve made and get up here!” Schuester yelled from the shop. Blaine froze momentarily then dropped the broom and started up the steps. He paused on the last step and straightened his shirt and tried to brush his curls down.
Why did his hair have to be so unruly?
“Blaine?”
"I found the plants you were talking about, Mr-" Blaine tripped on the last step and went flying into the shop, knocking over another plant.
"Blaine, look what you done."
But Blaine couldn’t look at the plant he’d knocked over because his eyes were completely caught on Kurt who was leaning against the counter. He was truly the most beautiful boy Blaine had ever seen. His hair was perfect, as always, the soft brown locks all coiffed exactly where they were supposed to be. His pale skin seemed to glow in the sunlight that filtered in from the dirty windows at the front of the shop. His lean body build was displayed under clothes that clung to him perfectly and spoke to his flawless fashion taste despite his limited budget.
But it was, as always, his expressive eyes that caught Blaine’s attention the quickest. Kurt’s eyes were magical, really magical. They were blue in the current lighting, but in a minute they could be green or silver. They seemed to shift with his mood. They were always bright and clear though, and beautiful.
Everything about Kurt was beautiful, painfully, wonderfully beautiful.
What had Blaine been doing? He couldn’t remember anymore. Kurt always did that to him.
“Finally! Where have you been, Blaine?”
Mr. Schuester’s strict voice helped bring Blaine out of his Kurt induced haze and he sprung back into action. He dropped to the floor and scooped up the broken pot.
“Sorry, Mr. Schue.”
“Never mind that mess. What were you doing down there? You left the register unattended.” Blaine looked up from the pot he was trying to clean up and realized that Mr. Schue was in front of the register, going through the contents of the drawer. He’d be disappointed with its contents, as always.
“Sorry, sir. We haven’t had any customers since lunch.” Blaine stood. “So I went downstairs to straighten up a bit.” He walked towards the counter (and managed not to trip over anything!). Kurt was smiling now and Blaine had to focus extra hard not to just stare at him. “Hi Kurt, you look incredible. Is that new eye makeup?”
Kurt flushed, which made him even more adorable to Blaine, and looked away. “No, it’s not.”
Oh yeah, Blaine had forgotten to add that to his mental list earlier. Kurt's voice was beautiful as well. It was so soft and musical.
Mr. Schue muttered something under his breath and Blaine looked over to see him pull out the entire contents of the drawer. Blaine had to fight back a cringe at the sight of three small bills. Looked like it would be a little longer before he was going to get paid.
“How would you know? You were downstairs. Anyone could have come up and tried to buy something.” He looked down at the three bills in his hand. “Or tried to steal something.”
Blaine didn’t think the informing Will of the fact that they didn’t really have anything worth stealing would be all that wise at the moment.
“Sorry, sir.”
Will shoved the bills back into the register with a sigh. “Fine, whatever. It’s your lunch break.”
Blaine nodded his head and dug his hands into his pockets before turning towards the door to the shop.
