Blaine's mom opened his bedroom door, and found him sitting on his bed, staring blankly out the window. "Blaine, honey, what are you looking at?" she asked, sitting on the bed beside him and putting a hand on his shoulder. He didn't turn around. "Are you waiting for Charlotte?" she asked, squeezing his shoulder. Finally, he turned to face her. "Where is she, mommy? She said she was coming over at 1, its 2:30!" he said, pointing at the clock and sounding frantic.
"Sweetie, Charlotte's mother called. She won't be coming over today. In fact, I don't think she'll be coming over anymore." His mother said it softly, obviously trying not to upset him. But the damage was already done. "Why would she do that? We're best friends!" he said indignantly, crossing his arms. His mother sighed, looking right into her son's eyes. They were the same as his father's, those hazel eyes that sparkled in any light. "Her mommy doesn't want her talking to you anymore." With those words, the hazel eyes filled with tears. Blaine moved away from his mother's touch.
"Why?"
It took all of his mother's courage to remain dry-eyed at this moment, that little, innocent voice not knowing any better, wanting to know why his only friend wasn't allowed to see him.
"Mrs. Hartman said that Charlotte told her that you said you like boys."
Confusion crept over her son's tiny features, his teary eyes widening. "What's so wrong with that?" he asked, wrapping his arms around his knees and pulling them to his chest. "Well, some people think that it's wrong for boys to want to marry other boys." She said, her voice trembling slightly.
"Am I a bad person?"
Tears sprang into her own eyes, and she had to look away so her son wouldn't see that she was upset. "No, no, baby, you're a wonderful person, you've done nothing wrong. At least, I think so." She told him. His father would be very unhappy if he knew about his son's confession. She knew that for a fact. He was a conservative, a businessman, a man who couldn't have people know he had a gay son. And Blaine was so young, perhaps he was wrong about his sexuality.
"But you have to promise me something. You won't tell your daddy about this talk until later. And by that, I mean a few years from now, do you understand?" Blaine could tell that something was wrong by now, but didn't question it. Mommy was sad, and he would do whatever it took to make her happy again.
"I promise."
"Why do we have to go all the way out here just to get coffee?" Kurt asked, giving Blaine a confused, slightly condescending look. "The Lima Bean is perfectly fine, or is it too cheap for you private school kids?" he joked, nudging Blaine in the arm as they entered Sally's.
"I told you, I want you to meet a friend of mine." Blaine said, knowing that Kurt probably thought he was crazy by now. When they had driven out of Lima, Kurt had given him the strangest look. "Are you abducting me or something?" he had said, raising one eyebrow. Blaine almost laughed at the memory, but then remembered that he didn't want Kurt to think he was crazy.
Suddenly, Blaine looked over and realized that he wasn't the only crazy around here. Charlotte was at a table by the window, and had just noticed the two boys. Her eyes were wide, and she was giving Blaine a knowing look. "Who's that?" Kurt asked, sounding slightly concerned. Char did look like a bit of a psycho at the moment, and Blaine turned back to his crush.
"Oh, that's my friend I wanted you to meet. Let's get our drinks first, and then we'll go talk to her." He said, regaining his confidence as he walked up to the counter.
"So this is Kurt!" Oh no. So that's what she started with. Blaine gave a slightly forced smile. "Yep, mhm, this is Kurt, my friend I wanted you to meet." He said, giving Char a look that said "Don't scare him away!" "Well, I'm Charlotte Hartman, I've known Blaine since we were kids." She said, shaking Kurt's hand and smiling warmly at him.
"Kurt Hummel, apparently you already know who I am." Kurt said, shaking Char's hand and then sitting down and crossing his long legs. "So Kurt, I hear that you're also in glee club, are you guys competing against each other at sectionals?" Char got right to the point, as always.
"Well yeah, we will be, but there'll be no hard feelings or anything." Kurt told her, sipping his coffee and tapping his fingers on the table. He seemed oddly nervous, like Charlotte was interrogating him or something.
"Well, since you're such good friends, I know you'll be able to handle it." She said with a smile, looking at Blaine in a slightly suggestive manner. All he did was look over at Kurt and grin.
Surprisingly, Kurt gave him a quick grin back.
