“You guys cool?” Finn asked Kurt as they stood in the kitchen cleaning away the paper plates from dinner and putting the left overs in the fridge.
“Yeah, we’re good.” Kurt smiled happily, his eyes gazing towards the other room where Blaine was teaching Candie some dorky yet adorable dance moves.
“I’m really glad you two worked it, I want you to be happy Kurt.” Finn smiled patting his brother’s shoulder as the finished cleaning up.
“Me too. What about you and Rachel? How are you guys doing? Any talk on the future?” Kurt asked sitting down with a beer gesturing for Finn to do the same.
“Rachel’s just great man. We’re doing awesome. As for the future I don’t know. We’re both still in college, I’ll be twenty-two next month so we’re still pretty young. We’re engaged, but we probably won’t get married until we’ve established a future for ourselves, and get settled here in New York. I wanna buy a house with her; raise a family, stuff like that. But I also wanna stay with you guys. I couldn’t imagine not waking having breakfast with you and Candie, or singing songs in the hallway, hell I’d even miss Santana.” Finn said with a laugh.
“I’m so glad everything’s going well for you too. You deserve happiness Finn.” Kurt smiled.
“You too bro. Now come on, let’s go see what are loves are doing in the other room.” Finn said happily.
After cuddling with Blaine and watching Candie and Rachel preform a rendition of some Barbra Streisand song, Kurt decided it was time he went to go check on Santana.
“Hey San? Is Britt coming home?” He asked walking into the bathroom and sitting down next to her on the edge of the tub, handing her a new bottle of water. That’s one thing he knew about Santana, drinking was for when she was sad, but water was for when she was nervous. It’s weird because typically when you’re feeling nervous you already have to pee but she always says that water helps her relax, when she’s drowning in thought it’s easier to clear her throat and not get all choked up. It was weird, but it was one of the quirks Kurt knew so well about her. Another thing was that as she drank the water she’d pick at the label with her fingernail, fraying the edge and completely tearing it apart. Santana may appear like a stuck up bitch from time to time, but seeing these little things is how Kurt became so acquainted to her more sensitive side.
“She’s not coming home tonight. And she’s not staying with this Zach guy either. She’s with her cousin in Manhattan. Zach explained to her that cheating was cheating and now she’s upset because of how she treated me and now she won’t come home because she thinks I’m mad at her. And then I told her what we did, maybe to convince her that since we both cheated they could cancel each other out. I had no right to say that to her and then she told me to stop treating her like she was an idiot. I really fucked up and I don’t know what to do.” Santana stared crying and Kurt wrapped his arms around her slim waist.
“Shhh its okay San, it’s okay. You’ll get her back; it’s all going to be okay.” Kurt promised her.
“Hey Kurt are you in here?” Blaine asked knocking on the bathroom door.
“Yeah come on in.” Kurt said and Santana immediately stood up and blocked the door.
“Yo Bilbo Baggins, You shall not pass!” Santana said earing an eruption of laughter from Kurt.
“Come on San, let him in.” Kurt laughed.
“Oh fine.” Santana grumbled and let Blaine in.
“Hey Santana, how are you doing?” Blaine asked comfortingly setting the lid on the toilet down and using it as a chair as Santana claimed her spot next to Kurt on the tub.
“Just peachy.” Santana said rolling her eyes.
“San.” Kurt warned her.
“I’m not okay. I just want Brittany back.” Santana cried.
“Well then let’s go get her.” Blaine cheered grabbing Santana’s hand and leading her out of the bathroom. “Come on Kurt! We’re going on a secret mission!” He announced and the trio exited the bathroom.
“I wanna go on a secret mission with you daddy!” Candie said excitedly tugging at his pant leg.
“Sure thing grab your coat kiddo!” Santana said excitedly, having no idea where it was they were going, just the fact that she was going to get her girl.
“Santana, it’s like eight o’clock at night, shouldn’t our five year old daughter be in bed, not being dragged all over the city on some crazy mission.” Kurt laughed.
“Come one Kurt where’s your sense of adventure!” Finn said grabbing his jacket.
“Wait? Are we all seriously going?” Rachel asked.
“Sure why not!” Blaine smiled.
“Fine, but Candie make sure you where you’re heavier jacket and grab a pair of mittens, I don’t want you being cold or getting sick.” Kurt said in a parenting voice and she did as she was told.
“Okay who’s ready for operation ‘Brittana!’?” Blaine exclaimed.
“Brittana? Really. You’re such a dork.” Santana teased.
“A dork who’s helping you win back your lady.” Kurt added.
“How exactly are we going to do this?” Finn asked confused.
“I don’t know, I guess we’ll come up with a plan on the way.” Blaine smiled and they all left the house.
The car ride over was filled with anticipation as the gang piled into Blaine’s car. Blaine drove, Santana riding shotgun to give directions to their destination of Brittany’s cousin’s house. Kurt, Finn, and Rachel squished in the back seat; Rachel sandwiched in the middle, and Candie sitting comfortably on Kurt’s lap.
“We should sing her a song!” Blaine suggested.
“That’s lame; you should just try talking to her.” Finn commented.
“Mommy you should bake her cookies.” Candie added trying to be helpful.
“Damnit! I wish I would have had time to bake her cookies.” Santana groaned. “How about I open with a song, have a heart to heart with her and hope for the best.” Santana smiled.
“In the worst case we could always kidnap her.” Kurt suggested with a shrug.
“True, true. But let’s stick to Santana’s plan.” Rachel said patting Kurt’s knee.
“Fine.” Kurt groaned.
“Oh god we’re here.” Santana said and Blaine pulled into the driveway, everyone piling out of the car and running up to the steps.
Kurt texted Brittany to come outside, to his pleasure she didn’t question it and walked straight outside. God bless her child like nativity.
“Santana, what are you doing here?” Brittany asked.
“I wanted to talk to you, and sing you a song, and hopefully persuade you to come home with us.” Santana smiled softly.
“Britts, I’m sorry I got mad. You honestly didn’t know what you were doing would hurt me, and then I did what I did hurting you. We’ve both made mistakes, and I don’t think we should waste any more time placing blame. All I know is that I love you, I always have, and I always will. I don’t know what I would do without you; life would never ever be the same. You are the best thing I’ve ever had and you’re more than my love can offer. Please baby, come back. I promise to never hurt your feeling or to treat you any less special than you deserve. I love you with all my heart, and I just want you back.” Santana spoke softly her words being choked by sad tears.
“Before you say anything, I wanna sing you a song. And I hope these crazy people will help me out because they want you back just as much as I do.” Santana smiled and started playing music off her phone.
“You were in college working part time waiting tables. Left a small town, never looked back. I was a flight risk with a fear of falling, wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts.” Santana sang and Brittany’s eyes began to water.
“I say can you believe it? As we’re lying on the couch. The moment I could see it. Yes, yes I can see it now.” Blaine sang wrapping his arms around Kurt.
“Do you remember we were sitting there by the water? You put your arm around me for the first time. You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter; you’re the best thing that’s ever been mine.” Kurt sang hugging his man and patting his daughter’s forehead.
“Fast forward and we’re taking on the world together. And there’s a drawer of my things at your place. You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded. You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes.” Finn sang to Rachel.
“But we got bills to pay. We got nothing figured out. When it was hard to take. Yes, yes this is what I thought about.” Rachel sang in response.
“Do you remember we were sitting there by the water? You put your arm around me for the first time. You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter; you are the best thing that’s ever been mine. Do you remember all the city lights on the water? You saw me start to believe for the first time. You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter; you are the best thing that’s ever been mine.” Santana sang to Brittany.
“And I remember that fight, 2:30 a.m. as everything was slipping right out of our hands. I ran out crying and you followed me out into the street. Braced myself for the goodbye, ‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known. Then you took me by surprise You said I’ll never leave you alone.” Kurt sang happily.
“You said I remember how we felt sitting by the water. And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time. I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter; she is the best thing that’s ever been mine.” Santana sang again.
“Hold on, make it last. Hold on, never turn back. You made a rebel of a carless man’s careful daughter; you are the best thing that’s ever been mine. Do you believe it? We’re gonna make it now. I can see it. I can see it now.” Brittany sang the last verse in response.
“I love you Santana, I wanna come home. I wanna be your girlfriend. I wanna be your friend.” Brittany said tears dripping down her rosy cheeks.
“I wanna be your girlfriend. I love you so much Brittany. Just remember that you’re the greatest thing that’s ever been mine.” Santana cried grabbing her girl and kissing her deeply earing a round of applause from the family.
“Come on guys, let’s go home.” Blaine smiled and wrapped his arm around Kurt’s waist. There was peace in this dysfunction once again and everything was good. And for once they truly were going home. Where ever Kurt is, that is where his home is. Because Kurt was the best thing that ever was his. He’d lost him once before and he was never going to lose him again.
