The bell rang and I gathered my books, Kurt walked me to the door waving to Finn dramatically to show that he was still there and he said good bye to me. Well technically he said ‘Bye Blake’ but I mean I think that’s close enough. He wrapped his arm around Q’s tiny waist and the two of the sulked down the hall.

“God I hate Quinn.” Finn scowled as we walked to our next class.

“Quinn?” I asked confused.

“Q.” Finn replied with a laugh. “I forgot she goes by Q now. How silly of me to forget.” Finn said sarcastically.

“Why’d she change her name?”  I asked.

“I don’t even know. She changed her name when she changed her personality.” Finn explained.

“Oh, so she wasn’t always that charming?” I teased.

“No and supposedly Kurt hasn’t always been that much of a downer. I don’t know, he’s only my step brother. And I’ve only lived with him since sophomore year. He’s not fake like Quinn though. I don’t think he ever let’s his walls come down. He protects himself and cares little what others think of him.” Finn explained with a sigh.

“Is that a bad thing?” I asked confused.

“I don’t think so. I think ignoring everyone is the only way to get through his day; there are some awful people in this world Blaine. Awful awful people who can tear you down and spit you out. Some people can adjust, or cope, or fight back. But I think one day Kurt just broke.” Finn whispered like he was telling me some conspiracy theory.

“I see.” I replied although not fully understanding. I just actually felt guilty talking about him, as if he was a fictional character we were discussing. I kept having to remind myself that he was real, he was a real person, and he was a real person with a story. Not some urban legend or a mythical creature, he was a teen just like Finn and me. But somehow he stood above all else, he was just different. I felt a shiver run down my spine, and in that moment I knew I had to learn everything about this boy that I possibly could.

“Well here we are, pre-calculus, or shall I say the worst class to ever exist.” Finn groaned leading the way over to the teacher’s desk. I was introduced much the same as I was to the English teacher and I took a seat next to Finn in the middle of the classroom.

The class went by relatively smoothly, just basic course syllabus stuff. I found myself glancing out of the nearby window and I saw three students sitting outside on a ratty old sofa, each with distinctively colored hair.

Q sat on the left a cigarette hanging from her mouth, a blonde haired boy with purple streaks sat on the left, and Kurt in the middle his feet plopped up on Q’s lap, and his head resting in the other boys lap as he passed him a cigarette.

Finn must have seen where I was staring and he laughed, it was a bitter laugh.

“Damn, Kurt and Sam need to quit fooling around or Burt’s going to chew them out tonight if they get a call from Figgins.” Finn frowned.

“Who’s Sam? And Burt?” I asked confused.

“Sam goes here, he’s a senior too. He’s parents lost their jobs and had to move. But he came to live with me and Kurt. Burt is Kurt’s father and he doesn’t like it when they ditch class.” Finn explained to me.

“So why doesn’t Kurt come to class?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I think he’s too smart for this school. He wants to just get his GED and start working but Burt told him he has to finish high school. The kids here don’t like Kurt. They beat him up, and bully him every chance the get so he tries to stay away.” Finn said with a sigh.

“Why do they do that?” I asked completely shocked, Kurt did not look like the kind of guy that would take crap from anyone.

“It all started when people found out he was gay.” Finn shrugged and I looked out the window just in time to watch Kurt making out with Sam, Quinn pretending to gag before burning Kurt’s arm with her cigarette.

Is it wrong that I actually felt a pang of jealously in my chest when I saw the two kiss? I don’t know either of them, and I don’t exactly have a right to be jealous. It’s just that Kurt is so beautiful and after finding out that he was gay it would have been nice if he was single and gay. I didn’t know how long Kurt and Sam had been dating or anything really, I just felt jealous.

It was strange, that feeling of being drawn to Kurt. Watching the two interact I actually felt betrayed.

Having Finn shed more light on the skanks allowed me to gather a better understanding of them. There was a story behind Q, or Quinn, there was a story behind Sam, and supposedly there was a story behind Kurt. Which is why it was becoming increasingly important to me to figure who exactly Kurt was.

Watching the smile on his face, I knew that look. There was something behind it. And I promised myself I’d figure out who he really is. I just want to learn all about him, I want to study him; I want to be his friend. And most importantly I want to be there for him. From what I’ve heard, if Kurt really is as broken as Finn believes him to be, maybe I can be the one to help him heal.
