“Kurt. We know you have been going through a hard time. As your family and as your friends we have gathered here today to let you know we are here to help you. We want to help you see that what you are doing to yourself and what you are dealing with is not okay. And we want to help you beat it. Each and every one of us here before you today, cares deeply about you and we can’t stand to sit by and watch you hurt yourself like you have been doing. When you cut you say things like ‘it makes you stronger’ or ‘it feels good’ these are not justifications for your actions. Cutting and other forms of self harm are just that, harm. How can something so awful to you help you in anyway? We understand that your depression has taken a serious toll on you and has been a cause for the majority of your cutting. Cutting is not a valid way to deal with your emotions Kurt. The way you have been handling your problems is unhealthy. Not just to you, but to our family. Our parents and I are truly worried about you Kurt. Watching you do the things you do to yourself is so painful to us. We have offered you help, but you won’t take it because you don’t see that you have a problem. Hopefully today you will see the light and will know that what you have been doing is wrong. It is not too late to turn your life around; you just need a little help is all. Today several of your friends will be reading you letters addressing how what you are doing is bad and how they want to help you. It would be appreciated if you would please have a seat and listen to what everyone who loves you has to say. Thank you.” Finn read off a sheet of paper and gestured for Kurt to sit down.
This is going to be a long day Kurt thought to himself.
Next up was Mercedes, “Kurt. I love you. You are my best friend, you are an amazing person and I am sorry I was not always there for you. You have been going through a tough time for awhile now, and none of us were there when you needed us most. This changes today. I will always be there for you Kurt. Right now you really need some help, but it is okay. I assure you, we will get you the help you need and from there you will be on the road to recovery. You are not alone Kurt, about 20% of adolescents have admitted to self-injury. Many people much like you who engage in self-injury suffer from an underlying mental health disorder such as Depression or Anxiety. Both of which you have. I understand that sometimes life gets hard. I can’t imagine going through what you went through but you need to know that there is a better way of dealing with this rather than inflicting pain on yourself. I know you are having difficulties with trusting people given what you went through, but you need to know that talking to somebody about how you are feeling is one of the best ways to cope with depression. I know that you have struggled with all of these problems in the past and that recently they have been reoccurring due to the bullying that escalated to the attack. How did you deal with the pain before? I think it is time you get help, you need to learn how to handle what you are feeling and even though we have been trying, I think professional help would be your best option. I’m sorry about everything you have been going through, I know it is a lot but just know we love you Kurt. We love you exactly how you are. There is no need to starve yourself or hurt yourself to feel better, we are here for you. We want to make you feel better. You just need to let us help you. Thank you love.” Mercedes read off her letter.
It was very touching and Kurt could see where she was coming from.
They day continued on like this, all of his friends and his parents read sad letters about how wrong cutting was and how he needed help for his depression.
By the end of the day Kurt understood what the meant.
What he had been doing to cope was not healthy, he could see now that it was hurting him and those around him.
He came to the realization that he didn’t need to be perfect for those around him to love him.
He had been reminded that he was surrounded by love and that people cared about him.
That was enough for him to realize he needed to change.
Sure he would miss cutting, nothing would ever be as good at taking away the emotional pain as it, but he would try.
He needed to try.
Today had been very beneficial in that he was going to accept help.
He would try to stop his self harm and he would let people back in.
He had been pushing people away for too long, it’s a wonder they all came back to him.
He guessed they did truly love him.
And for that he was grateful.
The final letter to be read was the one he had been dreading.
Blaine’s letter.
“Kurt. Before I begin I want you to know that I love you more than anything else in this world. I would do anything to see you happy, and I have been trying my hardest to help you see that it’s okay to accept help. I have been there for you all along, but each time you have pushed me away. It doesn’t matter because you can’t push me away. No matter how hard you try I will always love you. I will always be here for you Kurt. Whether you need me or not I will always be here for you. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you Kurt. And it breaks me to pieces inside to see how much you are hurting. I knew all along about the situation with Karofsky and I thought you trusted me enough to let me in. I was heartbroken to find that you had been keeping things bottled up. Important things about how you were feeling. And the fact that instead of coming to me to help you-you turned to a knife to harm you broke me inside. I wish I could have been there to stop you. To love you. To tell you that everything would be okay. But the thing is, I wasn’t. I tried to be, but you wouldn’t let me in. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to put any blame on you, I just want you to know that you chose to do this. But you didn’t choose this, your mental illness did. You are sick Kurt, you need help. We all have been offering help, but you have neglected to take any of it. And that needs to change. I will always be here for you Kurt, but if you’re not willing to accept my help, there isn’t much I can do for you. I love you so much, but that isn’t enough. You need to love yourself. You need to love yourself enough to know that what you are doing isn’t right. You need to love yourself enough to know that you need help. Getting help isn’t something we can force you into. You need to, for yourself, know that you need it and have the want to get better. Without the want to get better it is unlikely that you will. It breaks my heart to say that, but studies have shown that it is true. I understand what you are going through. I just wish that you would understand when we say you need help. I want you to get better Kurt. I love you, and I die a little inside each time I see you hurting. I wish I could just take all of your pain away, but I know I can’t do that. What I can offer you though is my help. My help and my love. That is what I have for you. I hope that by now you can trust me enough to take me up on my offer. We love you Kurt and we want more than anything to help you. You just need to accept our help. Thank you.” Blaine read a tear rolling down his cheek.
“I need help.” Kurt cried as he ran over and hugged Blaine.
Blaine held the crying boy in his arms and cried with him.
“We will get you help Kurt.”
