It took some getting used to learning to live life like how Kurt was for Rachel and Blaine. Maybe a little more so for Rachel, Blaine was too lost in his love of Kurt to notice the little things like when the electricity was cut off when a bill wasn’t paid, or when there wasn’t enough food most times. But all and all they got by.
And they were happy.
As for Rachel and Finn, they made up and are still going strong. Rachel knew that an apology was in order, and she made sure Finn knew she was sorry. He understood it didn’t mean anything and that it was mainly stress talking. They made up and Finn supported her in every aspect. Even providing them with food and spare cash he made working in the tire shop.
Rachel and Blaine got jobs as well and they managed to help pay some utilities with Kurt. The cut down on unnecessary costs, and only bought what was absolutely essential. That one was probably the hardest for Rachel.
Everything got easier and they continued living. It wasn’t the best life, but they made due.
It was Wednesday evening sometime in April and Kurt was making out with Blaine during his break at the clothing store when his phone rang.
“Babe, you should answer that. It could be important.” Blaine said pulling away.
“The only important person in my life is right here.” Kurt said chasing Blaine’s lips.
Blaine gave him a quick peck and reached into Kurt’s back pocket stealing his phone.
“I don’t recognize the number.” Blaine said holding up the phone.
“Here I was trying to a have a moment with the man of my dreams but you killed the mood, here let me have that.” Kurt teased grabbing the cheap prepaid phone back.
“Hello is the Kurt Hummel?” A female voice asked.
“Yes, it is? May I ask who this is?” He replied confused.
“Marie Thompson, nurse at Lima Memorial Hospital.” The woman, Marie, responded.
“Oh. Is, um, everything okay?” Kurt asked nervously, Blaine moving in closely to catch pieces of the conversation.
“I’m sorry to tell you this but your father is in a coma.” She said monotonously like they were discussing breakfast cereals.
“Wh-what?” Kurt asked stunned.
“He’s in a coma. He went into cardiac arrest and is in a medically induced coma. I’m sorry to inform you.” She said simply.
“But why are you calling me?” He asked even more confused.
“Before he slipped into his coma he asked for you.” She said and Kurt froze on the other line.
“I’ll be right there.” He said breathlessly. Slipping the phone into his pocket, his fingers too numb to even hang up properly.
“Babe what’s wrong?” Blaine asked as Kurt collapsed against his chest, sobs shaking his body.
“We need to go to the hospital, my, my dad is in a coma.” Kurt said and Blaine went silent.
“Okay.” Blaine said and led the way towards the bus stop.
Once arriving at Lima Memorial Hospital Blaine signed them in as Kurt ran down the hall frantically checking rooms not even bothering to ask the nurse at the front desk.
He finally found the room, last door on the left, and he ran in closing the door behind him and breathing deeply.
He didn’t even notice Carole and Finn standing there until Finn put his hand on his shoulder.
And that’s when Kurt lost it; breaking down completely and letting all the anguish of the past years wash over him and flood out of him in a fresh wave of tears.
“It’s okay.” Finn comforted awkwardly, never knowing how to deal with other people’s emotions.
“I just-Why did he ask for me?” Kurt asked the question on everybody’s mind as Blaine entered the room wrapping his arms around Kurt.
“I think he’s sorry.” Carole said softly and Kurt looked up.
“I think he realized that he was wrong and that he wanted to make amends.” Carole said sadly.
“I’m not just going to be here to ease his conscience, that’s not fair. After everything he put me through.” Kurt cried.
“Shh, baby, it’s okay. Now isn’t the time for blame. You wouldn’t want this to be your goodbye now would you? Maybe this accident was a good thing; maybe you can put your troubles to rest. Maybe it’s time for some apologies.” Blaine said the only logical reasoning Kurt would listen to.
“Thank you.” Kurt said and moved to stand by his father’s bedside.
“Dad?” Kurt asked his voice raw from crying. He slipped his hand into his fathers and he could have sworn his father squeezed it back.
But that couldn’t be. But it was. Burt squeezed Kurt’s hand and the room was suddenly filled with beeping machines and a surplus of nurses.
“Kurt? Is that you kiddo?” He asked his eyes still closed, a tear slipping out probably against his will.
“Yeah dad, I’m right here.” Kurt replied.
“I’m sorry.” Burt said softly, the tension releasing from his body.
“I love you dad.” Kurt said sadly and continued to hold his father’s hand.
“I love you too kiddo.” Burt said his voice choking up with tears.
The room fell silent, but the air felt lighter.
After checking out of the hospital it was decided that Kurt move back home, where he was accepted. He only went back on one condition though, that Blaine and Rachel could come live with them too. Having the extra room and the need to have his son back Burt complied and took everyone in with open arms.
It almost felt natural being back, the four teens continued on their course of education, and everything went well. Kurt and Blaine continued their jobs, Kurt saving the money for a future, and Blaine for something closer.
And that leads us to where we are now, with Blaine standing in the center of a jewelry store deciding on the cut of diamond for his boyfriends engagement ring.
Blaine proposed to Kurt on their four year anniversary and Kurt eagerly accepted and they made plans to marry their first week in New York where they’d be attending college.
Neither wanted a big wedding, knowing they’d both have little family in attendance, especially Blaine.
However, Kurt had one wedding gift that he knew his fiancé would want more than anything. Which is why sitting in the front row of the tiny chapel sat Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. Proud smiles on their faces, and a knowing regret in their eyes. They had missed many years of their son’s life, years they’d never get back. But now here they sat, after much insisting, and mostly begging on Kurt’s part, enjoying their son’s wedding. Maybe they weren’t all for embracing the gay, but they weren’t ready to lose a child either. Acceptance comes in baby steps, and they were ready to take those steps. And Blaine couldn’t have been more proud.
After that day all old wounds had been healed and Kurt and Blaine were ready to begin a new chapter of their lives, together as a family.
They had entered their relationship both a mess in their own ways, but they were always there for each other, teaching one another to trust in love and once again be happy.
And as long as Kurt had Blaine and Blaine had Kurt, they’d always be happy.
