It's early in the morning when Blaine is stirred from his sleep by his phone buzzing on his nightstand, and when he wakes up enough to realize why he's awake, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes and reaching for his phone, he's sure that there must be some kind of emergency because why else would someone be calling him at 5:30 in the morning? The light of the phone pierces the darkness and he squints, his eyes finally adjusting to the light. Once he sees the name on the caller I.D his face falls. Not him, not this, not now. He sighs and takes the call, about to get up and take it into the bathroom so as not to wake the sleeping boy on the bed next to him, but when he feels a shift of weight on the mattress and hears a sleepy voice call out his name, he knows it's too late.
“What's going on?” The other boy asks, rolling over to face Blaine, his words punctuated with a yawn.
“Shhhhh, love. Nothing. Go back to sleep.” Kurt would usually put up some kind of fight but it was 5:30 in the morning and he was tired. So he lets his eyes fall shut again, curling up against Blaine's pillow. Blaine smiles at him, taking the call to the bathroom with him. Kurt is extremely tired but not asleep, and he catches bits and pieces of Blaine's side of the conversation. He hears Blaine saying something about having woken up his roommate, something about “later, we can talk about this later,” and something about “no, not now, are you crazy?” Five minutes later Blaine returns, looking flustered in the shadow of the fluorescent light coming from the bathroom. It's so early and he's not a morning person and he hasn't had his coffee and why was this happening to him, now? He sighs when he sees Kurt's eyes open, watching him curiously.
“I thought you were asleep,” he says gently, sliding back under the covers. Their legs tangle together, their fingers intertwine.
“I was,” Kurt says sleepily. “What's going on? You're upset.”
Blaine shakes his head. “Nothing. It's nothing.”
“Blaine, it's something. I know you.”
Blaine says nothing, just sighs and cuddles into the other boy more.
“You know you can tell me anything,” Kurt says softly, resting his head on Blaine's chest.
“I know. Don't worry, it's nothing. Go back to sleep.”
Kurt couldn't help but worry. He was always worrying, when it came to Blaine, who deserved to be happy more than anyone else in the world.
He knows it's more than nothing.
But he supposes this can wait for the morning.
“Hmph, fine. But if you want to talk about it in the morning, I'm here.”
“I know.” Blaine squeezes Kurt's hand and listens to his breathing even out. They have to be up in an hour.
Blaine knows he won't be able to talk about it then.
